Popular and prolific novelist Howard Fast was born in New York City. His parents were poor immigrants, and he worked odd jobs as a youth, crediting his love of reading to a job as a page at the New York Public Library. He published his first novel at eighteen, and found early success writing adventures set in America's past. He worked for the Office of War Information during World War II, writing for the radio program Voice of America. A Communist from about 1944-1956, Fast appeared before the House Un-American Activities Committee in 1950, was jailed briefly for contempt, and blacklisted, compelling him to write under various pseudonyms, and to found the Blue Heron press to publish his work. While in prison he wrote Spartacus, one of his most enduring works. He is perhaps best known for April Morning and The Immigrants saga. He also wrote science fiction, mysteries, plays, and screenplays.

Molloy, Robert, 1906-1977. Robert Molloy papers, 1929-1976.
Title:
Robert Molloy papers, 1929-1976.
Correspondence with friends, family, and publishers (Box 1); typescripts of published and unpublished novels and short stories (Boxes 2-6); magazines containing his short stories; scrapbooks and clippings relating to his career as literary critic and author, including book reviews written for the New York Sun (Box 7); and his notes for writing and teaching (Boxes 4 and 6). Diary, April 1941 - August 1976, in 4 volumes, re daily activities during 35 years of his life in New York (Box 6); correspondence with friends, fans, and business associates, along with ideas for future writing projects (Box 1); typescripts of published and unpublished novels and short stories; magazines containing articles by Molloy; and scrapbooks and newsclippings re his career as a literary critic and author (Box 7). Much of Molloy's correspondence was exchanged with fellow novelist William McFee, a ship's engineer who became famous for writing sea stories. McFee's letters discuss news of the literary world and other contemporary affairs. On 6 Apr. 1944, McFee wrote, "It is my obsession that nobody has ever had the position as national poety that [Rudyard] Kipling had in the Empire. Nobody writes about America as he did about England. I don't suggest that he be imitated but that we need something between [Walt] Whitman ... and Eddie Guest." Letter, 17 Feb. 1948, Charleston, S.C., from William McFee, "I suppose you notice the political rumblings even in the New York papers. The Southern governors were planning secession from the Democratic Party and even the United States ... Sen. Olin Johns[t]on called [William Watts] Ball an effete reactionary, vindictive doting old man whom time has passed by. So I guess Mr. Ball is pretty conservative when Olin goes on like that. They say [President Harry] Truman's Civil Rights scheme is 'unamerican.' " After publication of the non-fiction history, Charleston: A Gracious Heritage in 1947, E. Milby Burton wrote to Molloy, "You have at last accomplished something that I have always wanted to see done, and that is to write a readable history of Charleston." Other correspondents include Glenn Allan, Van Wyck Brooks, Howard Fast, Rebecca Motte Frost, Alfred A. Knopf, and Elizabeth O'Neill Verner (Box 1); includes various drafts of a work about the life of Iowa native Lewis Dodge (1870-1952), author of books for adults and children (Box 6); and typescript for The Light and the Shadow, a work about life of French foreign minister Robert Schuman, author of the "Schuman Declaration" of 9 May 1950, a proposal that resulted in creation of the European Union / European Common Market (Boxes 2 and 5); Box 5 holds related research notes for Light and Shadow and incomplete copies. Includes Molloy's notes for use in teaching a class on writing fiction and notes for future writings (Box 4), with 4 volumes of notes discussing the the novel, Cakes and Ale, by W. Somerset Maugham (Box 6); various drafts of The Lost Ones and The Best of Intentions, and typescripts of An Afternoon in March and The Other Side of the Hill (Box 3).

Title:
Miriam Bogorad Gittelson Papers and Photographs Bulk, 1930-1945 1925-1975
Miriam Bogorad Gittelson (1916 – 2006), a life-long political activist, joined the Communist Party’s Young Pioneers as a child and worked for left-wing and labor organizations such as the American Youth Congress, the Young Communist League, Camp Kinderland, and the Greater New York City CIO in the 1930s and 1940s. She also pursued a lifelong interest in music, playing several instruments, singing in a Yiddish choral society, and editing, with singer-songwriter Earl Robinson, a songbook of American ballads and American and international folk-songs. The contents of this collection are largely sheet music, songsheets and scores, published and unpublished song books accumulated by Gittelson. The bulk of the materials were created or published between the early 1930s through the 1940s. The political point of view represented in them ranges from strongly left-wing--including support for the Communist Party of the United States--to more liberal mainstream positions supporting labor unions and international cooperation. The collection also contains photographs, including an album with snapshots of delegates attending the Second World Youth Congress in August 1938.

Title:
Papers, 1932-1985.
Papers of Albert Maltz (1908-1985), a novelist, playwright, screenwriter, and blacklisted member of the Hollywood Ten. The collection emphasizes his screen writing and consists of variant drafts for early successes ("Destination Tokyo," "Pride of the Marines," and "This Gun for Hire"); later works for which he received no credit ("Broken Arrow" and "The Robe") or from which he was fired ("Exodus" and "The Execution of Private Slovik") because of the Blacklist; and numerous unproduced titles. Work for the Theatre Union during the Depression is documented by script drafts (primarily of unproduced plays) and microfilmed clippings. General writings include microfilmed clippings about his short stories and novels, and speeches and statements, many of which concern the Hollywood Ten and related political issues. Also about the Hollywood Ten are minutes and information pertaining to meetings, legal and public relations materials, and recordings of memorial services for Herbert Biberman and Adrian Scott. The processed portion is summarized above and is described in the register. Additional accessions are described below.

National Council of American-Soviet Friendship Records, 1919-1990
Title:
National Council of American-Soviet Friendship Records 1919-1990
The National Council of American-Soviet Friendship succeeded the National Council on Soviet Relations, founded in 1941. The NCSR grew out of the more overtly radical American-Soviet friendship movement of the 1930's, whose organizational center was the Friends of the Soviet Union founded in 1929. The Council, composed largely of professionals who were sympathetic to Socialism, believed that the USSR and the United States should join together in their common fight against fascism. In 1946, the House Un-American Activities Committee began a formal investigation of NCASF, and in 1947, it was indicted for failure to register with the Subversive Activities Control Board. Throughout its operation, the NCASF issued numerous pamphlets and bibliographies about life in the Soviet Union, as well as information on American-Soviet relations. The collection includes the correspondence of the NCASF's principal officers, publications, flyers, scrapbooks, etc. NOTE: This collection is housed offsite and advance notice is required for use.

Photographs contain a few personal photographs but are mostly news and publicity photographs, many of which depict prominent Communists and other newsmakers. Artwork includes sketches, drawings, designs, prints, and production elements for Gellert's artwork, as well as prints and drawings by Philip Reisman, Gyula Derkovits, and Anton Refregier.

The times were not auspicious." Cohen, who attended mainly to hear Robeson and author Howard Fast, noted that "several of the blacklisted Hollywood producers and directors" were there and "made a big thing of announcing their plans to make a movie of Howard Fast's Freedom Road, based on Robert Smalls, with Robeson as the star. As far as I know nothing came of it either."

Also found here are prints and reproductions of Refregier's "Peace card" block engravings for every year from 1950-1973, with the exception of 1970.Photographs document all phases of Refregier's career and include family photographs dating from circa 1900, photos of Refregier in the studio including work for the WPA, Refregier and other artists and individuals at events and parties from the 1940s-1970s, travel snapshots probably taken in Chile, Guatemala, Mexico, and the Soviet Union, and photographs of artwork and installations. Hugo Gellert papers
Title:
Hugo Gellert papers
The papers of graphic artist, muralist, and activist Hugo Gellert measure 6.9 linear feet and date from 1916 to 1986. They document his career as an artist and organizer for the radical left through an oral interview conducted by Sofia Sequenzia, legal papers, financial records, family papers, artifacts, correspondence, writings, organizational records, clippings, exhibition catalogs, various printed materials illustrated by Gellert, pamphlets, periodicals, mass mailings, photographs, and artwork.Biographical Material includes an audio interview with Gellert; official documents related to memberships, property, and legal matters; financial documents that include bills, receipts, and contracts related to professional activities; papers of Gellert's brothers, Lawrence and Ernest; and artifacts. Correspondence is with other artists, writers, publishers, activists, friends, and family, including Ernest Fiene, Rockwell Kent, Harry Gottlieb, William Gropper, Philip Evergood, Howard Fast, and Jonas Lie. Writings include essays, book projects, notes, and notebooks written by Gellert; and stories and articles by other authors, including typescripts of early twentieth-century Hungarian short stories collected by Gellert.Organizational Records are related to political and art organizations in which Gellert was an active organizer, officer, and in some cases, a founder. Because of his central role in many of these organizations, records often contain unique documentation of their activities. Records are found for the American Artists Congress, the Art of Today Gallery, the Artists Committee of Action, the Artists Coordination Committee, the Artists Council, Artists for Victory, Inc., the Committee to Defend V.J. Jerome, Hungarian Word, Inc., the National Society of Mural Painters, and other organizations.Printed materials include a variety of political publications and periodicals with illustrations by Gellert, including <emph render="italic">New Masses</emph>, <emph render="italic">Art Front</emph>, <emph render="italic">Magyar Szo</emph>, and <emph render="italic">American Dialog</emph>; clippings related to his career, exhibition catalogs, political pamphlets, Hungarian literature, and mass mailings received from political organizations.
