Gamble (1894-1966) (Harvard, M.D. 1920) became involved in the birth control movement in 1929 when he helped to establish the Maternal Health Clinic and Committee in Cincinnati and became associated with a Philadelphia clinic. In 1933 he chaired the board of Philadelphia Maternal Health Centers, and began a term as president of the Pennsylvania Birth Control Federation. He later served in an executive capacity with the Birth Control Federation and Planned Parenthood Federation of America. He provided funding for research for the National Committee for Maternal Health and supported field tests for contraceptives. In 1957 he established the Pathfinder Fund to advise and work with major family planning agencies. In addition, he did research on family planning and population control and taught at the Harvard Medical School.
Clarence Gamble was born into one of America's wealthiest mercantile families (Proctor & Gamble) and was educated at Princeton University and Harvard Medical School. A man with a mission for using his considerable wealth and intellectual expertise for the good of mankind, Gamble devoted his life to “The Great Cause”--his goal of making each and every child birth the result of a conscious decision on the part of responsible parents.** From the late 1920s until his death in 1966, Gamble took part in almost every important gain in behalf of planned parenthood: initiating, directing, or financing a considerable number of programs advancing the cause of population control. As his efforts to work through and with the professional organizations in the field left much to be desired, Gamble eventually formed the Pathfinder Fund, which served as a family foundation for the remainder of his lifetime, but has since acquired a highly competent professional staff which advises and works with major worldwide family planning agencies.
* James Reed centers his book, From Private Vice to Public Virtue: The Birth Control Movement and American Society Since 1830 (New York: Basic Books Inc., 1978) around the efforts of Sanger, Dickinson, and Gamble. ** A full-length biography, Every Child a Wanted Child: Clarence James Gamble, M.D., and his Work in the Birth Control Movement (Boston: Countway Library Associates, 1978) has been written by Doone and Greer Williams and edited by Emily P. Flint. Both the Williams and Reed books have drawn heavily on the papers in the Gamble Archive.

Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts records, 1859-2002 (ongoing) (bulk 1916-1960).
The PPLM records provide a unique source for the study of the establishment and development of an organization largely run by women. They document the half-century struggle to revoke the Massachusetts Comstock Laws through state initiative and referendum voting (1942-1948) campaigns for the right to disseminate information on birth control. Also of interest are letters to and from Margaret Sanger, and from General Douglas MacArthur forbidding Sanger from visiting Japan; individual files of Loraine L. Campbell, birth control crusader and President of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America in the 1950's; and files on such topics as maternal and infant health, abortion, African Americans and birth control, population and public policy, eugenics, marriage and sex counseling, connections and conflicts with the Catholic Church, and contraceptive research. Types of materials include organizational records, conference proceedings, financial records, publicity, photographs, scrapbooks, a large amount of correspondence, and reports.

Title:
Papers of Clarence J. Gamble, 1920-1966 (bulk).
Gamble's papers are a rich source of information about the development and testing of contraceptive methods, changing attitudes of the medical and health professions, legislative reform and education of the public, governmental involvement on local and national levels, and demographic studies in developing countries after the post-World War II population explosion. Correspondence, memoranda, reports, minutes, conference papers, financial data, newsletters, and other material reflect the establishment, direction, and financing of programs by Gamble to advance the cause of population control through organizations such as the National Committee on Maternal Health, American Birth Control League, Birth Control Clinical Research Bureau, Birth Control Federation, Planned Parenthood Federation, and International Planned Parenthood Federation. Significant correspondents are Abraham Stone, Cecil Damon, Mary Calderone, and Christopher Tietze. Also included in the collection are correspondence and related material concerning contraceptive field trials, family planning studies, and other population control programs of various organizations and government agencies. Considerable material exists from Puerto Rico, India, Japan, Philippine Islands, Rhodesia, Mexico, and Italy, and files sometimes contain interview and field reports, statistical data, drafts of articles and reprints, photographs, and financial data and reports. Files from the United States include similar material, as well as records of organizations, such as minutes of meetings of human betterment leagues and printed literature from state planned parenthood groups, drafts of legislation, and publicity. Much of this material reflects the work of Edris Rice-Wray, Edith Gates, Margaret Roots, and Edna McKinnon. Additional Gamble correspondence is with Margaret Sanger, R. L. Dickinson, and other colleagues; with churches, drug firms; and with organizations such as the Margaret Sanger Research Bureau and Harvard School of Public Health. Subjects cover contraceptive research and supplies, sterilization, and family planning. Other significant materials include drafts, reprints, questionnaires, statistical data, and correspondence pertaining to Gamble's writings on sterilization and college birth rates; administrative, financial, and legal records of the Pathfinder Fund; some personal papers such as family and business correspondence, photographs, slides, and correspondence and notes documenting travels; and outlines, interviews and correspondence for a biography.

Voegeli, Martha. Papers, 1946-1965.
Title:
Papers, 1946-1965.
Papers include correspondence and writings. Most of the correspondence consists of copies of Voegle's letters to medical professionals and government officials espousing her views on birth control, famine in India, world peace, race relations, and animal rights. There are a few replies, including those from Dr. Clarence Gamble, Aldous Huxley, Dorothy Brush, LeRoy Collins, Dr. Mary Calderone, Albert Schweitzer, Dr. Harrison Brown, and Arnold Toynbee. There are also two speeches by LeRoy Collins (Governor of Florida) on race relations, 1958. Of particular interest are her writings and correspondence about male sterilization through the thermic method (1952-55) and selective breeding (1946-47), and her "One-Meal-A-Day-For-People-Over-Forty" solution to famine in India (1946).

Hepburn, Ethel Remington. Ethel Remington Hepburn papers, 1933-1941.
Title:
Ethel Remington Hepburn papers, 1933-1941.
A collection of letters and other material related to the promotion of access to birth control during the 1930s and early 1940s. The collection features material from the papers of Ethel Remington Hepburn, including eleven letters signed by Margaret Sanger. It contains 83 pieces dating from 1933-1941, largely signed, typed letters, but also telegrams, article reprints and material generated by the National Committee on Federal Legislation for Birth Control and its successors. In addition to the Sanger letters, there is also material signed by such notable early advocates for access to birth control as Stella Hanau, Dr. Marie Pichel Warner, Dr. Clarence Gamble, Caroline K. Simon, and Florence Rose, Margaret Sanger's secretary who later emerged to be quite influential in her own right in the birth control movement and the fight against world hunger. Much of the correspondence regards attempts to arrange lectures by Hepburn, requests for information for articles on the subject, and proposals for additional articles, including one particular effort by Dr. Gamble to place an article in the "true confessions" market. One segment of the collection also deals with Hepburn's relationship with Dr. Ellaine Elmore, a popular lecturer and radio host on the subject of motherhood during the 1930s, who later went on to author a number of works on psychic phenomena.

Papers, 1893-1978 (inclusive).
Personal and professional correspondence, financial papers, travel diaries, field reports, speeches, biographical material, clippings, promotional material for the biography about her, and photos. The professional papers: correspondence and field reports, pertain mainly to McKinnon's work with the Pathfinder Fund and are a good reflection of her activities. There is little material from her earlier work with Planned Parenthood, etc. The family correspondence contains only a small amount with the Rankin family, including her sister, Jeannette Rankin, the congresswoman. The bulk of it is with her daughter and documents their relationship and her daughter's life as a Montana housewife and writer. The photos are mainly of family members with a small number from Pathfinder Fund trips.
