Washington Hood papers, 1772-1861
Title:
Washington Hood papers 1772-1861
The papers consist of journals, correspondence, drawings, maps, architectural plans, family papers and business papers relating to Washington Hood, his father John McClellan Hood, and the Hood family. Journals document Hood's surveys of the Ohio and Michigan border in 1835 and of northeastern Oklahoma in 1839, and also include notes on painting and engineering. Family papers consist chiefly of correspondence and include letters to and from family members that describe Hood's expeditions. John Hood's business papers consist of correspondence, legal papers, and financial papers that document John Hood's personal finances and the business partnership of Hamilton and Hood in Philadelphia. One daguerreotype by photographer James M'Clees is included in the family papers, likely depicting John Hood circa 1850. Architectural plans include drawings that formed the basis of the Hood country home Bessie Bell in Limerick Township, Pennsylvania (built in 1834), and an 1834 proposal for a U.S. Government building designed to centralize executive staff. Maps include an early manuscript draft of Hood's 1835 map of Indian tribes west of Arkansas and Missouri. Printed maps depict charts and waterways in eastern North America.

Title:
Letters to John James Abert [facsimiles], 1850-1859.
Set of facsimile letters written from George Horatio Derby to Colonel J.J. Abert, mainly regarding work on the San Diego River levee. Derby writes of his activities at Monterey, his appointment to San Diego, his various expenses, his "long and tedious passage" from New York to San Diego, the results of his levee building survey for the San Diego River, the difficulties of acquiring funding for the project, his troubles trying to carry equipment on horseback, the completion of work on the San Diego River, Abert's unhappiness with modifications made by Derby to original levee plans ("I believe I am the only officer on this coast whose official drafts have ever been dishonored" writes Derby of the incident), his appointment as Aide-de-Camp of General Wool, and his work in the Cascades (Washington state). Derby also writes of being delayed on his travels by the birth of his child aboard a ship and his request to "improve in my profession...by examining the fortifications of Europe" with the hope of achieving the rank of Captain. Also includes a letter to Secretary of War Jefferson Davis in which Derby asks to be sent east to be near his ailing mother, a list of equipment lost in the Punta River, and various plans and estimates relating to the San Diego River.
