Howard Stansbury was an officer in the United States Army Corps of Topographical Engineers who worked on numerous surveys including an expedition to the Great Salt Lake region, and the U.S. Lake Survey. He retired in 1861 at the rank of Major.

John James Abert was a career United States Army topographical engineer. In 1829 he was placed in command of the Topographical Bureau in Washington, D.C. He died in 1863.
