These interviews were recorded 1975-1980 originally to provide spoken narrative and work-related environmental sounds for use in the production of audio-visual exhibits at Berea College Appalachian Museum. The interviews and in some instances, photographs document a wide variety of Appalachian traditional crafts, occupations, and expressive culture from areas of Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, Tennessee, and West Virginia. Subject areas include blacksmithing, carpentry, chair making, coal mining, corn shuck doll making, dulcimer building, gardening, herb lore, logging, pottery making, quilting, religion, spinning, vegetable dying, and weaving. The material relating to Pine Mountain Settlement School in part addresses the school's interest in preserving various aspects of traditional crafts and expressive culture. However, there is also a substantial amount of information regarding the schools founding, founders, and educational philosophy.

The photographs of this collection were taken or collected by Ethel Marion Wright. She was a teacher at the Pine Mountain Settlement School from about 1919-1921. There are 136 black and white silver gelatin print photographs, one black and white silver gelatin print postcard, one newspaper article from the 1950s about a former student, and one photograph album. Some of the photographs show the students doing daily chores, performing in a play and posing for class group pictures. The photographs of the teachers show them working, engaging in free time activities such as a picnic and shots of individuals. Other subjects of photographs are the school grounds, the areas around the school, and local people in the area. Most of the photographs are from 1919-1921, but two date from 1923. The collection is 0.5 cubic feet.

Campbell Folk School, the Christian Appalachian Project, the Civilian Conservation Corps in Pike County, Kentucky, and Berea College's Christmas Country Dance School. The musical material includes singing, dulcimer music, and commentary by Eastern Kentucky singer, Jean Ritchie and musical instrument craftsman, Homer Ledford.

Often referred to as "Talks Before the Filson," the collection contains numerous research papers and memorial speeches given before meetings of the Filson Club from 1887 to 1992. Topics cover many aspects of Kentucky history and culture. The bulk of the collection focuses on the period from the frontier era to the Civil War, but papers about later periods and non-historical topics are also included. Many prominent club members gave papers and had speeches given about them after their deaths. The collection also includes several poems and short stories.

There are two folders of records for the Pine Mountain Settlement School collections. One folder contains letters written by Dr. Ida S. Stapleton to friends around the country. These letters provide insight into the everyday lives and the events that occurred to the inhabitants of Harlan County, Kentucky, during the late 1920's and 1930's. The second folder contains printed articles, a typescript on the history of the School, two photographs of the school, and transcripts of letters. There is a second set of letter transcripts in the Manuscript office.

The Bullock-Pettit Photographic Collection consists of personal photos from Dr. Waller O. Bullock and his wife Minnie Pettit Bullock and a few photographs from Mrs. Bullock's sister, Katherine Rebecca Pettit. The Bullock-Pettit Photographic Collection was originally separated from the manuscript collection, the Bullock-Pettit Family Papers (87M26.) The photographic collection is arranged by series by person than into subject folders. The photographic processes included some modern process; several sliver print photographs, two photographic cutting plates, eight negatives, and 35 glass lantern slides. Dr. Bullock used the glass lantern slides in his lectures as a professor. Most photographs in the Minnie Pettit Bullock's series shows various stages of renovation by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) at the Ephraim McDowell House. Mrs. Bullock was supplied with "before and after" photographs of the renovation taken by the WPA and images of the furnished Ephraim McDowell House in the 1950s by the Lexington Herald-Leader.

Bullock-Pettit family. Bullock-Pettit family papers, 1885-1968.

Title: Bullock-Pettit family papers, 1885-1968.

The Bullock-Pettit collection includes the personal papers of Dr. Waller O. Bullock, his wife, Minnie Pettit Bullock, and her sister Katherine Rebecca Pettit. The majority of the papers associated with Minnie Pettit Bullock are of a financial nature, mostly canceled checks and bank statements. Also present are personal memorabilia such as notes on snuff bottles and gardening. In addition there are materials on the John Bradford Historical Society, of which Mrs. Bullock was a charter member, and are organized into three folders. Most of Katherine Rebecca Pettit's materials are related to the settlement schools at Hindman and Pine Mountain (Ky.) and to Appalachia in general. Included are articles written by Ms. Pettit and others, notes, reports and correspondence. The Audio-visual section includes glass slides used for medical lectures, lantern slides, photographs of the renovation of the Ephraim McDowell House, Danville, Ky. and various other photographs.

Collection includes letters from Francis Taylor describing conditions in the east, noting that Philadelphia has been plagued with yellow fever; receipts; land papers relating to Richard Taylor's interests in the Jackson Purchase of Ky. and in Ill.; legal papers, 1822-1838; letters, 1844-1850, written to Mary Taylor discussing family and health; and Bible records of the Taylor and Pythian families. Edmund Haynes Taylor's correspondence, 1820-1897, includes a hand-drawn 1847 map of "the Seat of War" during the Mexican War; a typescript of Zachary Taylor's 8 Mar. 1847 letter to E.H. Taylor describing the battle of Buena Vista; letter from John J. Crittenden; a 5 Sept. 1851 letter from Edmund H. McDonald describing his experiences during the Lopez expedition in Cuba, his capture, and his imprisonment in Havana; and two 1851 letters from Sidney Smith to Mary McDonald describing the fate of her son Edmund. Edmund H. Taylor's papers include land papers regarding property in Franklin, Ballard, Hickman, and Fulton counties, Ky.; and legal papers. The papers of E.H. Taylor's son, General Thomas Hart Taylor, include correspondence; receipts; newspaper clippings; and memorials. The collection also includes letters to Hubbard Taylor of Clark County, Ky., from his father James Taylor of Caroline County, Va., discussing agriculture, conditions in Caroline County, politics, family, and health; information on the Taylor family of Caroline County, Va.; material regarding President Zachary Taylor; and correspondence, 1833-1916, received by Philip Fall Taylor discussing family matters, family history, and genealogy. The remainder of the collection includes genealogical and family history materials on the Taylor, Cannon, Bacon, Fall, Woolfolk, and several other collateral families; the first draft of Philip Fall Taylor's "Taylor Book," which traces the history of the family in Ky. and Va.; correspondence, 1914-1949, of Jouett Taylor Cannon; tombstone inscriptions; and miscellaneous papers such as notes, Taylor Family Association programs, invitations, and calling cards.

The collection also contains materials, mostly newspaper clippings, from scrapbooks and notebooks documenting birth control issues and the activities of the Kentucky Birth Control League and Planned Parenthood.
