Pine mountain settlement school : letters, 1926-1939, bulk 1926-1933.

There are two folders of records for the Pine Mountain Settlement School collections. One folder contains letters written by Dr. Ida S. Stapleton to friends around the country. These letters provide insight into the everyday lives and the events that occurred to the inhabitants of Harlan County, Kentucky, during the late 1920's and 1930's. The second folder contains printed articles, a typescript on the history of the School, two photographs of the school, and transcripts of letters. There is a second set of letter transcripts in the Manuscript office.

Most of the documents were created by Dr. Ida Stapleton. She and her husband, Rev. Robert Stapleton, after spending twenty-five years as missionaries in Turkey, volunteered for further service at one of the medical outposts of the Pine Mountain Settlement School. Their outpost was known as "Line Fork Settlement" or just "The Cabin." Pine Mountain Settlement School was incorporated by Katherine Pettit and Ethel DeLong in 1913 and operated as a boarding school until 1949. In addition to regular academic subjects, students were involved in traditional music and dance activities, and a labor program that helped run the school and develop useful skills.
