Most of the documents were created by Dr. Ida Stapleton. She and her husband, Rev. Robert Stapleton, after spending twenty-five years as missionaries in Turkey, volunteered for further service at one of the medical outposts of the Pine Mountain Settlement School. Their outpost was known as "Line Fork Settlement" or just "The Cabin." According to the history included in the collection, "on the night of their arrival there was a 'shootin' and the doctor treated her first patient. The letters begin a few weeks after they arrived at the station.
