These are records of a socio-economic study conducted by Berea College sociologist Roscoe Giffin in the Pine Mountain community of Harlan County, Kentucky, 1950-1952. The records are primarily correspondence, survey questionnaires, data tabulations, maps, a draft report, and published articles.

Pine Mountain Settlement School was incorporated by Katherine Pettit and Ethel DeLong in 1913 and operated as a boarding school until 1949. In addition to regular academic subjects, students were involved in traditional music and dance activities, and a labor program that helped run the school and develop useful skills. The study was proposed in 1949 by Berea College president Francis S. Hutchins, who was then a trustee of Pine Mountain Settlement School. The school's boarding high school had closed that year and its elementary programs merged with the Harlan County school system. Although the sources of photographs are not always indicated, the bulk was apparently generated in the Berea College Publicity Department and the College News Bureau. In addition, portions of the photographs were donated by individuals, most of whom have some connection with the College. Chief among these is Roy N.
