Gilbert, Stuart. Papers of Stuart Gilbert, 1900-1985 (bulk 1928-1975).
Title:
Papers of Stuart Gilbert, 1900-1985 (bulk 1928-1975).
The Stuart Gilbert papers embrace correspondence, diaries, notebooks, clippings, photographs, and other material documenting Gilbert's literary career, particularly his work with James Joyce and as a literary translator. Series I of the Gilbert papers comprise the correspondence, diaries, notebooks, and other materials of Stuart Gilbert. The series covers the years 1900 to 1969, with the majority dating between 1940 and 1969. The correspondence and other papers are essentially professional in character; correspondents include Sylvia Beach, Peter Du Sautoy, T. S. Eliot, Richard Ellmann, Desmond Harmsworth, Ben Huebsch, Patricia Hutchins, André Malraux, Roger Martin du Gard, and Harriet Weaver. Gilbert's diaries, which span the years 1929 to 1967, and his numerous notebooks give insight into his assistance to and collaboration with James Joyce. His translation work and original writing is only sketchily represented. Series II, the correspondence, notebooks, and other materials of Moune Gilbert, reflects the social interests and daily activities of Stuart Gilbert's wife. As in the first series, little dates from before 1940. Correspondents inlcude James and Christiane Emmons, Milton and Laura Runyon, Narcissa S. King, and Anie Parent. The notebooks contain excerpts from French authors and abstracts of books read; a late interview contains Moune's description of her husband's relationship with James Joyce. Series III includes correspondence of James Joyce, along with a draft chapter of Finnegans Wake, some verse, photographs, and a collection of critical material on his novels. About seventy postcards and letters Joyce sent the Gilberts are included, as are others from Nora, George, and Lucia Joyce.

Lawrence, D. H. (David Herbert), 1885-1930. D.H. Lawrence Collection, 1904-1981 (bulk 1904-1935).
Title:
D.H. Lawrence Collection, 1904-1981 (bulk 1904-1935).
Manuscripts of novels, poems, short stories, plays, and other writings, correspondence, transcripts of court hearings, and miscellany trace the writing career and personal life of D.H. Lawrence, 1904-1981 (bulk 1904-1935), as well as popular reaction to his work. The Works series contains drafts of many of Lawrence's major works, including Sons and Lovers, Aaron's Rod, Women in Love, and four versions of Lady Chatterley's Lover. Also included is a holograph of "Odour of Chrysanthemums" transcribed by Louise Burrows, as well as numerous versions of The Plumed Serpent: Quetzalcoatl and Mr. Noon. Page proofs and paste-ups from the publication of The Body of God, a series of poems by Lawrence produced posthumously, are included. The materials in this series are in a variety of formats including notes and fragments, notebooks, typescripts, galley proofs, paste-ups, and page proofs. The Letters series is extensive and made up largely of holograph letters and notes from Lawrence. The series is fairly evenly split between business and personal matters and several recipients of these letters are particularly well represented, including Lady Cynthia Asquith, Achsah and Earl Brewster, Curtis Brown Ltd., A.W. MacLeod, Knud Merrild, Nancy Pearn, Laurence Pollinger, and Thomas Seltzer. The Recipient series is made conspicuous by its small size. Very few letters to Lawrence are included and most of those that are present deal with business. The Curtis Brown Ltd. Correspondence series, organized chronologically, consists of about 1500 items and includes letters to Lawrence, booksellers, agents, Curtis Brown's lawyers, and various other people involved in the publication and sale of Lawrence's writing. Also included are contracts with Frieda Lawrence for 1933 and 1934, as well as letters, financial statements and listings of copyright accounts sent to her after Lawrence's death. The Miscellaneous series consists of a wide variety of materials directly and indirectly related to Lawrence. A few personal items belonging to Lawrence--passports, address books, bank statements, check stubs--are included. However, the bulk of the series is made up of correspondence between other parties regarding Lawrence's work, transcripts from the American and English obscenity trials involving Lady Chatterley's Lover, and manuscripts of scholarly works about Lawrence. Noteable among the latter category are the complete notes and working manuscripts for F.W. Roberts' book, A Bibliography of D.H. Lawrence (1959).

Title:
Papers of S. S. Van Dine [manuscript], 1899-1978 (bulk 1899-1939).
The papers consist chiefly of correspondence with his first wife Katherine Belle Boynton Wright, his daughter Beverly Boynton Wright, and his mother Annie Van Vranken Wright. Correspondence mainly concerns family matters but there is some comment on his work as an art critic and detective novel writer, and particularly on his year as editor of "The Smart Set," 1913-1914. George Jean Nathan, H. L. Mencken, John Adams Thayer, Ben Heubsch, the New York Armory Show of 1913, and his brother, the painter Stanton Macdonald-Wright are mentioned. Of interest are letters from Jay Dinsmore describing Foochow, China in 1923, and a 1933 letter from Vienna regarding the rise of Hitler. The collection also contains drafts of poems, short stories and articles by Willard and Katherine Wright; a master's thesis "Willard Huntington Wright: aesthetic and critic" by Walter B. Crawford; and "Philo Vance: the life and times of S. S. Van Dine" by John Tuska; The collection also contains some printed material regarding Stanton Macdonald-Wright and synchromism in modern painting by Elizabeth Hertz; a transcript of Macdonald-Wright's European notebook. A few financial and legal papers, newsclippings, photographs, memorabilia and a memoir of her childhood by Beverley Wright complete the collection.

Klarmann, Adolf D. (Adolf Donald), 1904-1975. Correspondence with Alma Mahler and Franz Werfel, 1936-1964.
Title:
Correspondence with Alma Mahler and Franz Werfel, 1936-1964.
In addition to his extensive scholarly contributions to the dissemination of Franz Werfel's work, Adolf Klarmann, together with his wife, Isolde Klarmann, carried on a personal friendship with Alma Mahler and Franz Werfel. Correspondence until the time of Werfel's death, in 1945, reflects Klarmann's visits with Alma and Franz in Austria and New York and sometimes details about Werfel's current work. In 1 letter to Gottfried Bermann Fischer of 1945 Werfel indicates that Klarmann was planning a book about Werfel and expresses his appreciation and respect for Klarmann's scholarship. Shortly after Werfel's death, a long letter from Alma Mahler speaks about Werfel's condition in recent days and the circumstances of his death. Besides personal news and expressions of friendship between Alma Mahler and the Klarmanns, subsequent correspondence takes in the following aspects: Klarmann's scholarship on Werfel (and contact with other scholars) and his edited volumes of Werfel's works (including copyright matters), as well as decisions about manuscripts by Werfel, including his unfinished novel Cella and his last novel, Stern der Ungeborenen, for which Werfel completed only the first draft; the possibility of adaptations of Werfel's work (Klarmann corresponds with Paul Koretz and Saul Rogers in 1948 about the suitability of certain works for American film or theater adaptations); and the disposition of Werfel's archive, as well as Klarmann's gathering of materials by and related to Werfel. In a letter to Alma of Oct. 1945 (carbon copy), Klarman encloses a draft English translation of Franz Werfel's essay "Gustav Mahler." In a letter of Feb. 1949 he responds to Alma about his reading of her diaries in connection with her plans to publish a memoir. A few special highlights among letters from Alma Mahler: 1 letter of 1954 encloses handwritten notes that Franz Werfel had dictated to Alma in 1938, concerning the second part of his novel Die Geschwister von Neapel; 1 letter in 1961, which encloses a notarized will, concerns Alma's authorizing of her daughter Anna Mahler to make decisions after Alma's death about the disposition of all papers and manuscripts in Alma's possession, some of which were planned to be deposited at the University of Pennsylvania (the document gives Adolf Klarmann the right to make decisions on all publication matters pertaining to Werfel's works, subject to the approval of Anna Mahler); and 1 letter from Alma to S. Fischer Verlag in 1962 concerns her assertion of her exclusive decision-making role in an ongoing discussion (among the publisher, Klarmann and Alma Mahler) about the possible publication of Werfel's letters to Alma. Following are some additional items that are included: a photographic print of a charcoal portrait of Franz Werfel by Lene Schneider-Kainer (1885-1971), from around 1925; copies of 2 published essays by Adolf Klarmann, with personal dedications to Alma Mahler: 1 about Franz Werfel ("Das Weltbild Franz Werfels," published in the journal Wissenschaft und Weltbild), dated 1954, and 1 undated reprint of an essay entitled "Psychological Motivation in Grillparzer's 'Sappho'" (published in the journal Monatshefte); and a total of 16 newspaper clippings about Alma Mahler. 11 of the clippings are obituaries or other articles related to Alma's death, dated from Dec. 1964 to early 1965; 1 is a letter to the editor from Alma Mahler (with the heading "Warum ich fernbleibe") published in an Austrian newspaper in 1955; 1 is a review of Alma's memoir And the Bridge is Love in Newsweek in 1958; 2 are items about Alma from Austrian newspapers in 1961; and 1 is an undated clipping from the New York Times, about a protest letter pertaining to Austria's refusal to settle reparation claims with Jewish organizations, which was signed by 4 prominent former Austrians who had become American citizens, including Alma Mahler. See also separate container of Klarmann's short critical works on Franz Werfel.

Pinker, who began working with Joyce in 1915. The correspondence with Pinker documents Joyce's efforts to publish a number of his works, and to get existing works published in the United States. The collection also includes a copy of the 1927 International Protest against Samuel Roth's unauthorized publication of sections of Ulysses. Five names, written in pen, have been added to the long typed list of supporters of the protest and the voting record of the London Stage Society's governing board, which considered and rejected Joyce's Exiles for production in July of 1916. In addition to the Pinker correspondence are letters to Joyce from B.W. Huebsch and Lawrence Pollinger, James Stephens, Frank Budgen, T. Sturge Moore, James Starkey, Nora Joyce, and Paul Léon. There are also three letters, one from Caresse Crosby to J.W.N. Sullivan, one from Sullivan to Crosby, and one from Joyce to Harry and Caresse Crosby.

Title:
Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas papers 1837-1961
The Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas Papers contain manuscripts of writings, letters, clippings, photographs, artworks, and personal papers relating to the life and work of Gertrude Stein and her companion, Alice B. Toklas, and to Gertrude's brother, Leo Stein, an artist and writer. As well as holding the bulk of Stein's literary output (often described as "experimental" or "cubist" writing), the materials document Stein and Toklas' involvement with the literary and art scene in Paris during the first half of the 20th century. Series I, Writings, contains holograph and typescript drafts of the majority of Gertrude Stein's writings, including "The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas," "The Making of Americans" (complete with a quantity of notes, or "studies"), "Tender Buttons" and a group of unpublished fragments and carnets, notebooks kept by Stein with preliminary drafts of writings. Series II, Correspondence of Gertrude Stein, contains letters sent from a wide variety of Stein's friends: artists such as Georges Bracque, Jean Cocteau, and Pablo Picasso; writers such as Sherwood Anderson, Ernest Hemingway, and Thornton Wilder; and acquaintances through many years such as Mildred Aldrich, Etta and Claribel Cone, Robert Haas, Mabel Dodge Luhan,Sir Francis Rose, Virgil Thomson, and Carl Van Vechten. Series III, Third Party Letters and Series IV, Alice B. Toklas Correspondence, contain letters from many of the same people, the latter group containing Alice Toklas's correspondence following Gertrude Stein's death. Series V, Personal Papers, and Series VI, Clippings, gather together various personal affects of Stein and Toklas as well as documentation of Stein's life as reported during her lifetime. Series VII, Photographs, show Stein from early childhood through 1946, the year she died. Prints showing Alice Toklas, various friends, artworks, and locales are included in this series, as are several volumes of prints made by Carl Van Vechten. Series VIII and IX contain numerous artworks and objects given by Stein and Toklas. Included here are a painting by Pablo Picasso and a sketch by Henri Matisse.
