Looks forward reading his Tom Johnson review; is sorry that the Sudermann book did not reach himbut will forward another copy. Markham replies on the same page saying, that the other copy went astray too and asks to have the books sent directly to him.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901).
