Educated in California and at Harvard, Willard Huntington Wright became editor of THE SMART SET (1913-1914). After suffering a serious illness in 1925, he turned to writing detective novels under the pseudonym of "S. S. Van Dine". The principal character in this popular series is the master sleuth Philo Vance.
