A fabric analysis workbook, and note pages on fabric structure, dyeing, and other textiles subjects are included. Also included are materials relating to Powell's involvement in the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) and a loom machine manual authored by Powell and published by Cannon Mills in 1955.

The materials in the collection span from 1920 to 1985, with a few photographs of Courtenay and early Mill life from as early as 1899. The collection consists primarily of clippings and photographs of Newry, South Carolina collected by Henry Cater. The collection also includes photocopies of Mill baseball game rosters from the 1920s and some original pay stub envelopes from the 1930s and one from 1950. An 8mm film, "Newry in the fall of 1938" is also in the collection and has been copied onto VHS cassettes. The oversize material includes a blueprint copy of the Courtenay Manufacturing Company from 1920 and original time roll sheets from 1914. The collection is a useful source for learning about the Mill at Newry.

Wharton School. Industrial Research Unit. Records, 1941-2001 (bulk, 1968-1988).

Title: Records, 1941-2001 (bulk, 1968-1988).

The records consist of surveys, notes, interviews and background materials for the studies produced by the Industrial Research Unit and its predecessor from 1941 to 1990 and collected and maintained by Herbert R. Northrup. The bulk of the files are from the 1970s and 1980s, but there are also a few files from the Center for Human Resources and its first director, Peter Cappelli. Fininshed studies and publications of the Unit are catalogued in the Imprints Dept. The OSHA files deal with the impact of chemical exposure in the aerospace and chemical industries, and of noise and dust exposure in the textile industry. Series V consists of questionnaires for a 1991 survey conducted for the National Association of Manufacturers on the shortage of skilled workers, including questions on training, retraining, hiring practices, turnover rate and orientaion practices.

The records from the Alester G. Furman Company document the sale of real estate, primarily residential housing, by textile manufacturing companies during the period approximately 1945-1970. The Furman Company served as the broker for the sale of real estate which, with respect to the residential housing, in most cases was sold to the mill workers. Furman handled the loan applications, insurance, and all other matters related to the sale. The textile manufacturers involved in these sales had their factories located in the Alabama, Delaware, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. This collection documents one of the most significant turning points in the history of the textile industry. The sale of the mill villages changed the relationship between the mill and its workers while at the same time providing capital for the renovation of the mills. Perhaps equally important, the collection includes plates of the mill communities at the time of their sale. The records usually contain correspondence, records of financial dispersements, and sometimes insurance and other material related to the sales. Most of the sales and the bulk of the records are from the 1950s-1960s. Thereis an individual folder(s) for each mill community which often contains detailed listings of the names of the purchasers of homes and the amount of the purchase, method of payment, and status reports related to the liquidation of all properties and transfer of funds held in account. In the case of the J.P. Stevens Corporation, there is considerable documentation from the mid-1980s related to the sale of Stevens property after the purchase of that firm. In most cases, there are plat maps of the mill community or other property at the time of sale, although some plats may have been drawn up to several decades earlier. The collection contains materials, 1914-1986, including business records, correspondence, writings, speeches and speech materials, administrative records, newspaper clippings, diaries, scrapbooks, photograph albums, family papers, sound recordings, and videocassettes relating to John Harden. Business records of John Harden Associates include information about businesses and other organizations in North Carolina and the South and the public relations services Harden provided to them. Major clients included North Carolina National Bank (NCNB), the North Carolina Fish Processors Association (promoting the menhaden fishing industry), Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation, and the Tryon Palace. Other files document Harden's employment as a public relations executive with Burlington Industries, Inc., and Cannon Mills Company. Many of the Cannon Mills files reflect Harden's efforts to improve the company's image in the light of its opposition to union organizing activities. Also included are files related to Harden's political activities as a Democrat; his work as secretary to Governor Robert Gregg Cherry; his work in Hugh Morton's 1972 gubernatorial campaign; and his work promoting North Carolina businesses, especially during the administration of Governor Luther H. Hodges. Harden's work as a journalist and his interest in North Carolina folklore and ghost stories and his collection and publication of "The Devil's Tramping Ground, and Other North Carolina Mystery Stories" (1949) and "Tar Heel Ghosts" (1954) are also documented. Harden's personal papers include correspondence about his experiences as a student at the University of North Carolina in the 1920s and about his work with the Episcopal Church in North Carolina.

Correspondence and printed materials. Correspondence is chiefly that of William J. Smith, North Carolina director for the C.I.O. Organizing Committee, 1946-1950, and of Franz E. Daniel, North Carolina director, 1950-1953. Printed material relates principally to the C.I.O. Organizing Committee campaign to unionize unorganized workers in North Carolina, 1946-1953. Other material pertains to the United Furniture Workers of America, including correspondence of U.F.W.A. state and national officials and information on companies the U.F.W.A. was trying to organize. Materials concerning the Textile Workers Union of America include information on the various mills and manufacturing companies the T.W.U.A. was attempting to organize; grievances against Marshall Field and Company; the organizing drive in the Cabarrus County (N.C.) area, particularly the campaign directed at the Cannon Mills Company; medical care in North Carolina; and North Carolina labor laws. Oliver Max Gardner (1882-1947), lawyer of Shelby, N.C., and Washington, D.C.; state senator, 1910-1915, lieutenant governor, 1916-1920, and governor, 1929-1933, of North Carolina. He married Fay Webb (1885-1969), who was active in the Democratic Party and in women's organizations. The collection includes corrrespondence, legal documents, financial records, speeches, press releases, political campaign materials, photographs, college notebooks, and scrapbooks of O. Max Gardner, 1892-1947; of Gardner family members, 1905-1966; of Shelby lawyer, businessman, and politician Odus M. Mull, 1930-1942; and of Shelby educator Isaac C. Griffin, 1917-1918. Included are items relating to Fay Webb Gardner and other family members. The Courtenay Manufacturing Company Records document the operations of a textile mill including the financing of the firm, the purchase of equipment and raw cotton, the sale of cotton products, and the hiring, employment and payment of workers. The operation of a merchandise store and homes for the mill's workers is also recorded among these records. The records consist of four series: Correspondence, Accounts Receivable, Personnel Records, and Purchase Orders as well as oversize material which consists of the following types of records: Administration, Financial, Operations/Production and Personnel.
