Donnell Shaw Holt was born in Graham, N.C. on March 7, 1908. He was graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1929. In 1932, he married Margaret McConnell of Gastonia, N.C. Holt became executive vice-president of Travora Manufacturing Co. in 1938. During World War II, he served as Lt. Commander in the U.S. Navy.
