Donnell Shaw Holt was born in Graham, N.C. on March 7, 1908. He was graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1929. In 1932, he married Margaret McConnell of Gastonia, N.C. Holt became executive vice-president of Travora Manufacturing Co. in 1938. During World War II, he served as Lt. Commander in the U.S. Navy. Holt became plant manager of Cannon Mills Company in 1950, vice-president in 1951, and executive vice-president in 1959. He was named president and chief executive officer of Cannon Mills Company in 1962.

In 1971, Holt became chair of the board following the death of Charles W. Cannon. Holt died in Charlotte on November 20, 1982.
