The papers of Henry Tazewell (1753-1799) and Littleton Waller Tazewell (1774-1860) constitute the majority of the records in this collection. Though numerous receipts and vouchers are included, the extensive number and range of more important papers reflect the prominence of the Tazewell family in Virginia's history. The earliest Tazewell papers are chiefly wills and legal papers relating to land titles, many of them copies, but filed under the original date. From 1762-1799, letters are interspersed with legal documents and business papers relating to the Tazewell's of their clients. From 1800-1859, the papers are chiefly those of Littleton Waller Tazewell or his son, John Nivison Tazewell. Correspondence between members of the family illustrates the life of an upper class Virginia family of the period, with a great deal of information about the family plantations, letters from the son at school (Harvard, William & Mary, University of Virginia, & Princeton). The material also sheds some light on Norfolk history, and it has important papers reflecting national history in the 1820's and 1830's. The material from the 1860's deals chiefly with the career of Edmund Bradford, husband of Anne Elizabeth Tazewell, an officer in the Confederate Army. There are a few letters from Mrs. Bradford at Charlotte Court House, giving her impressions of the last days of the Civil War. Other correspondents include Peter Muhlenberg seeking a military appointment; Edward Carrington commenting on William Grayson's health and congressional proceedings; Alexander Bullitt introducing Kentucky senator John Edwards; John Beckley commenting on war in Europe; and John Taliaferro reporting in 1786 that Monroe lost the election to Daniel Fitzhugh. Horatio Gates comments on negotiations with Indians and the ineffectiveness of Congress without a source of revenue; John F. Mercer is leaving Congress; Thomas Jefferson discusses affairs in France, and the recovery of British debts; Henry Lee reports the death of Arthur Lee; Henry Tazewell attacks Federalists; and John Marshall transmits Monroe's salary as a delegate to Congress. Other items include an excerpt of a Monroe letter reporting on congressional proceedings and commenting on an Annapolis woman; a photocopy of a report by Monroe, Richard Henry Lee, and William Grayson to the Governor of Virginia (1785) concerning Virginia state debts and western land cessions; photocopies of the 1784 certificate of Monroe's election as delegate to Congress and 1790 election to the U.S. Senate; and letters about the border dispute between Virginia and North Carolina.

Grosvenor discuss state and national politics, including payments to officers of the Virginia revolutionary armed forces, the 1783 peace negotiations, Quasi-War with France, presidential elections of 1800-1801, War of 1812, and the policies of the Madison administration. The petition of Aug. 25, 1809 signed by members of prominent Maryland families urges John F. Mercer to run for a seat in Maryland General Assembly. John Marshall's letter describes his legal practice in Richmond. The letters from John F. Mercer's agents Muse Battaile and John Colquhon concern with the financial and legal matters, including the lands in Kentucky.

Public Hospital for Persons of Insane and Disordered Minds. Court of Directors. Minutes, 1770-1801.

Title: Minutes, 1770-1801.

Early meetings were concerned with the construction of the hospital building and the procurement of necessary equipment and supplies. Once the hospital was opened, the Court retained authority over its finances. The largest expenditures were those for the day-to-day maintenance of the inmates, and were administered by James Galt, keeper of the hospital. In addition, the Court controlled the admission and release of patients recommended to the hospital's care, primarily by the county courts. Court members include many prominent Williamsburg residents.

The collection is primarily business papers of Walter Alves. The bulk consists of correspondence, surveys, rental accounts, and other papers pertaining to Alves's extensive land holdings in North Carolina and in the Clinch and Powell rivers areas of east Tennessee. Also included are family correspondence, letters from Federalist politicians, and papers pertaining to Alves's move to Henderson, Ky. Correspondents include Gavin Alves, Richard Bennehan, William Boylan, Duncan Cameron, Walter Evans, William Gaston, William B. Grove, Archibald Henderson, James Hogg, Alex Mebane, James Norwood, and Henry Tazewell. Many items pertain to the estate of Alves's father-in-law, William Johnston (d. 1785), mainly concerning the efforts of Edmund Fanning (1739-1818), North Carolina colonial official and Loyalist for whom Johnston had been agent, to recover properties confiscated during the Revolution. These estate papers include correspondence, 1805-1812, between Alves and John Wickham (1763-1839), noted Virginia lawyer, and relevant earlier papers.
