The letters from Henry Tazewell, Richard Dobb Spaight, Richard Forrest, and Thomas P. Grosvenor discuss state and national politics, including payments to officers of the Virginia revolutionary armed forces, the 1783 peace negotiations, Quasi-War with France, presidential elections of 1800-1801, War of 1812, and the policies of the Madison administration. The petition of Aug. 25, 1809 signed by members of prominent Maryland families urges John F. Mercer to run for a seat in Maryland General Assembly. John Marshall's letter describes his legal practice in Richmond. The letters from John F.
