Stuart items in the collection include diaries, 1856-1857, documenting his service in the U.S. Army; correspondence, 1850-1864, primarily concerning Stuart's cavalry operations during the Civil War; and, an autograph album, 1862- 1863, kept by Stuart, containing signatures of Confederate officers. Also in the collection are the correspondence, 1864-1910, of Stuart's wife, Flora (Cooke) Stuart (1836-1923), largely regarding the character and death of her husband, and genealogical notes concerning the Esten, Randolph, Stuart, Tazewell, and Waller families. Title: Reminiscences of Columbus C. Chambers, after 1865.

This handwritten reminiscences covers Chambers military service from his enlistment in the 11th Mississippi Infantry Regiment up to his wounding at the Wilderness and his time at a field hospital recovering. In it, he details his company's movements; his life in camp; watching his friends die; and their experiences in the following battles: Williamsburg, Seven Pines (Fair Oaks), Mechanicsville (Beaver Dam Creek), Malvern Hill, Sharpsburg (Antietam), Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and the Wilderness. Chambers gives a nice, detailed narrative of the fight in the Wilderness including his getting shot in the shoulder, his time in a field hospital, and his furlough home to Mississippi. In his manuscript, Chambers often talks about the following officers: Robert E. Lee, Henry Heth, Joseph R. Davis, Joseph E. Johnston, John Bell Hood, William H. C. Whiting, and Stonewall Jackson (his death). The manuscript also includes handwritten copies of two orders recieved by Chambers and one newspaper clipping (in pages 94-95) regarding orders by General Lee, General Heth and General A. P. Hill .

Confederate officers photographs, 1861 - [1864?].

Images of Confederate officers were taken during the Civil War and then mass produced into a card form. These cards, called cartes-de-visites, were collected by individuals and many were kept in albums. These cartes-de-visites were donated from the Robert Steiner III estate and include twenty-three original cartes-de-visites of Confederate commanders.

The collection consists of a bound manuscript compiled by Charles Colcock Jones, Jr. entitled "Letter of General Robert E. Lee tendering to the President of the Confederate States his resignation of the command of the Army of Northern Virginia: with explanatory remarks by Charles C. Jones, Jr." Thus, the main body of the manuscript is Jones' transcription of Lee's famous letter. More importantly, however, the volume has tipped in six prints of Lee, six of Jefferson Davis, two of General George Meade, and one each of Generals P.G.T. Beauregard, Braxton Bragg, A.P. Hill, T.J. Jackson, Joseph E. Johnston, John H. Morgan, and J.E.B. Stuart. Views included are two of the Battle of Gettysburg, the Capitol at Richmond, and two unusual views of Richmond, as well as a folding map. In addition three letters are tipped in: 1. opposite page 4. This letter from General G. E. Pickett to General Braxton Bragg, dated 26 April 1864, one page, discusses military matters preparatory to the Battle of the Crater and as such is historically important. 2. opposite page 6. Note signed by Robert E. Lee and addressed to President Davis informing him the the "Florida Brigade cannot be spared from the army." 3. opposite page 11. Note signed by Davis and dated 25 August 1863 referring to the above. Apparently both 2 and 3 are endorsements from the same original piece and separated by Jones for inclusion in this volume. The volume also has clippings of Jones' "A Piece of Secret History" (Scribner's Magazine, February 1876) and a review of this article (The Cycle, 29 January 1876).
