Eric Russell Bentley (1916- ) was an American editor, translator and professor of dramatic literature at Columbia University.
Eric Bentley, theater critic and dramatist.
Charles Ludlam (1943-1987), the son of Joseph William and Marjorie Braun Ludlam, was born April 12, 1943 in Floral Park, Long Island. He graduated from Hofstra University in 1965 and then moved to New York City to begin his acting career. Ludlam made his first New York stage appearance in 1966 at the Play-House of the Ridiculous, a group formed by playwright Ronald Tavel and director John Vaccaro. In 1967, Ludlam founded his own theatrical group, the Ridiculous Theatrical Company, and began to write his own plays. According to the Cambridge guide to theatre, "the Ridiculous Theatrical Company was one of the first American theaters to deal explicitly with homosexual themes. Known for their flamboyant style, high camp, and combinations of the lofty and the lowly, plays at the Ridiculous are often based on classical dramatic and operatic texts, which are then both spoofed and celebrated with cross-dressing, scatological humor, visual gags, and puns." "Since Ludlam's death from AIDS in 1987, the Ridiculous has continued under the directorship of his life-partner Everett Quinton, a long time actor and designer with the theatre."

Title:
Inventory to the Records of the Conference on Literature and Urban Experience (CLUE), Rutgers University Newark, April 17-19, 1980 1978-1983
The Conference on Literature and the Urban Experience (hereafter referred to as "CLUE"), took place on April 17, 18, and 19, 1980, in the Robeson Center, Rutgers University in Newark, New Jersey. It featured more than 50 distinguished writers and academics discussing a wide range of topics—"literature, theater, film, education, and the visual arts" focusing on the theme of urban experience. Designed as an educational experiment intended to engage a larger, public audience, CLUE intended to reach out to the public at large and involve it in a broad discussion of the modern urban experience. CLUE was an important event in several respects: first, it was an important humanities gathering focusing on a timely theme; second, it was a community outreach experiment; and finally, it succeeded in disseminating materials from the conference in a variety of formats. The records are divided into five separate series: I. Participants' Correspondence and Conference Papers, II. CLUE Organizational Papers, III. Fundraising Efforts, IV. Information on the Rutgers University Press (RUP) Publication Papers, V. Photographs

Title:
The Jack Gelber Papers 1938-2002 (Bulk 1957-1999)
The Jack Gelber Papers reflect their creator's career as a writer, director and teacher of American theatre. Much of the collection is composed of Gelber's correspondence and writing, particularly his plays. The collection also holds a smaller amount of records dedicated to a number of the theatre productions and workshops he directed which included performances of his own works. However there are few documents concerning his career as an instructor. As a whole the collection contains substantial quantities of correspondence, typescript drafts, handwritten notes, printed advertisements, and clippings along with a few journal entries, audiotapes, and videocassettes.

Taylor, Peter, 1917-1994. Letters to Robie Macauley [manuscript], 1946-1948.
Title:
Letters to Robie Macauley [manuscript], 1946-1948.
In a series of letters, July 1946 through October 1947, Taylor critiques one of Macauley's short stories and describes his own teaching opportunities, works in progress, and infatuation with playwriting. He also discusses the need for a literary magazine edited by someone under forty who can recognize new talent; his "grand revolt against impressionist dogma" and his plans to purchase and remodel the homeplace of his wife's family. There is also a letter, 1947 December 11, Taylor, Greensboro, N.C., to Macauley mentioning speeches to be made by John Crowe Ransom, Randall Jarrell and others at the Arts Forum of the Women's College of the University of North Carolina in the spring and Robert Penn Warren's difficulty in writing an introduction to Taylor's second book. In addition a letter, 1948 April 22, Taylor mentions that "The Sewanee review" will be printing his first play and that he finds playwriting his best method of expression.

Lucille Lortel papers
Title:
Lucille Lortel papers
The papers of Lucille Lortel relate the details of her life and career from teen years to her death in 1999, and include correspondence, production files, scripts, programs, production photographs, personal and family photographs, organization files, clippings, memorabilia, and scrapbooks. Lucille Lortel's life spanned the twentieth century, so in addition to providing details of her family and personal life her papers encompass many aspects of the theatrical history of her era. Lortel is credited with fostering the Off-Broadway movement and providing a forum for avant-garde and experimental work at her Theatre de Lys. Lortel's productions at the White Barn and the ANTA Matinee Series at the Theatre de Lys brought works by Jean Genet, Sean O'Casey, Athol Fugard, and others to a wider audience. Many of these productions are represented in the collection by correspondence, programs, photographs and clippings. Over the years Lortel also worked closely with several non-profit theaters as a donor and mentor. Her affiliations with Circle in the Square, Circle Repertory Company, Goodspeed Opera House, Yale Repertory Theatre, and other companies are documented in the organization files.

John Fuegi papers
John Fuegi (1936- ) has been the Clara and Robert Vambery Distinguished Professor of Comparative Studies at the University of Maryland, College Park, since 1992. Fuegi holds a Ph. D. in comparative literature from the University of Southern California. In addition to the University of Maryland, he has taught at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Harvard University, Wesleyan University, and at institutions in Berlin and Mainz, Germany, and Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Support for Fuegi's seventeen books and films on subjects as diverse as Virginia Woolf and twelfth-century nun Hildegard of Bingen was derived from grants and awards by the Guggenheim Foundation, Rockefeller Foundation, American Council of Learned Societies, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Danish Film Institute. An authority on the life and work of Bertolt Brecht, Fuegi was the founder of the International Brecht Society in 1970 and edited the first fourteen volumes of its Proceedings. The collection contains materials related to Fuegi's research for the book Brecht and Company: Sex, Politics, and the Making of Modern Drama(1994) and his award-winning film about Danish novelist Ruth Berlau, Red Ruth: That Deadly Longing (1992). The collection consists primarily of manuscripts, research files, and publicity materials for Brecht and Company. Materials also document Fuegi's activities in the field of Brecht scholarship through articles and audio-visual materials, records of the International Brecht Society, and significant correspondence with scholar Eric Bentley. Other materials include correspondence, clippings, and photographs relating to Bertolt Brecht's collaborators such as the writers Elisabeth Hauptmann, Ruth Berlau, and Margarete Steffin, and the dramaturge Robert Vambery. While some of the materials in the collection are originals, others are photocopies of extremely rare material such as records from the Bertolt Brecht Archive at Harvard University.

Photographs

Alan Schneider Papers
Title:
Alan Schneider Papers
Papers of Alan Schneider, a prominent director in contemporary American theater. For many productions, the director's prompt book provides Schneider's conceptual notes, analysis of theme and characters, and notes on direction. The collection contains correspondence between Schneider and actors, writers and directors, including Edward Albee, Robert Anderson, Zelda Fichandler, William Saroyan, and Tennessee Williams. Absent from the collection is original correspondence between Schneider and Samuel Beckett and the collection contains only a small amount of photocopies of correspondence between Schneider and Beckett. Schneider's writings, speeches and interviews are well documented in the collection. The accession processed in 1997 contains the editorial files of Franklin Heller for Schneider's autobiography entitled ENTRANCES. The accessions processed in 2003 contain early and professional writings by Schneider, post-theatre production notes, journals, scrapbooks, photographs, and audiocassette recordings. The accession processed in 2008 contains scrapbooks ranging in date from 1948-1984 and one folder of newspaper clippings.

Title:
Tennessee Williams Collection, 1880-1993 (bulk 1930s-1970s).
Typescript, composite and holograph manuscripts, correspondence, bibliographies, clippings, scrapbooks, academic papers, business records, galley proofs, photographs, and artworks document Tennessee Williams' life, work, family, and friends from 1880-1993. While the dates of the collection span from 1880 to 1993, the bulk range from the mid 1930s to the mid 1970s. The earliest item is a letter to Williams' grandmother, Rosina Otte Dakin, and virtually all material dated prior to 1930 relates to Williams' family. Materials dated after Williams' death in 1983 are largely biographical or concern productions of his works. Correspondence includes both personal and business letters with a large portion consisting of carbon copies of letters from Williams' agent, Audrey Wood. Other correspondents include Brooks Atkinson, Cheryl Crawford, Elia and Molly Thatcher Kazan, James Laughlin, and Pancho Rodriguez Y Gonzalez. The Works by Others series includes notes and drafts of an extensive Williams bibliography created by Andreas Brown.
