Katz, Jonathan, 1938-
Variant namesJonathan Ned Katz (1938- ), author, playwright, historian, teacher, gay rights advocate, and textile designer, is a leading authority on homosexuality and gay and lesbian history.
During the 1960s Katz worked in New York City as a free-lance textile designer. His writing career began in the late 1960s with the production of his plays about fugitive slaves and the publication of studies in black history. He became a founding member of the Gay Academic Union; wrote books, articles, reviews, and essays on gay and lesbian issues; and lectured and taught courses on gay and lesbian history.

Katz and his father, Bernard Katz, conducted research on the history of black oppression and resistance. Katz was born in 1938.
Lucy Terry Prince was considered America's earliest African-American poet. She was a slave in Massachusetts and was later freed when bought by her husband, Abijah Prince, a New England landowner.

Jonathan Ned Katz is a historian specializing in gay and lesbian issues and in African-American slavery during the ninteenth century.
He was educated at Antioch College, 1956-1957; College of the City of New York, 1957-1959; New School for Social Research, 1961-1962; and Hunter College, 1972. He has taught gay and lesbian history at New York University, the New School for Social Research, and elsewhere. Katz has not conducted research on African-American history since the 1970's.
