The Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroad (P&LE) began operation in 1879 after the 1878 consolidation with the Youngstown & Pittsburgh Railroad Company. Headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pa., the P&LE line began as a single track railroad connecting Pittsburgh to Youngstown, Ohio. The railroad began its affiliation with the New York Central System in 1883 and, by 1890, was one of the principle rail routes in the eastern United States. Financed in part by the Harmony Society, a communal religious sect located just north of Pittsburgh in Economy, Pa., and in part by William Henry Vanderbilt's Lake Shore & Michigan Southern Railway, the P&LE had extended south to Connellsville, Pa., and handled six times the amount of freight it had in 1880, earning its nickname, the "Little Giant." The P&LE continued to progress into the twentieth century thanks, in part, to the advances in railroad technology. The development of all-steel cars made it possible to carry a load of up to 50 tons. Additionally, advancements made in train brakes through the Westinghouse air brake system and automatic couplers, allowed P&LE trains to run safely at faster speeds and carry heavier coal loads. The P&LE also operated as a passenger line. Beginning with its first passenger train in February 1879, the railroad became a heavily used line by travelers and commuters. Although passenger trips were relatively small, the average trip was around 20 miles. Until 1941, the passenger trains accounted for one-half the miles of the freight trains. However, the rise of popularity of motor trucks, private cars, and buses led to the eventual decline of train travel. By the mid-1970s, only one commuter train remained on the P&LE line. While the early 1970s brought a decline in passenger travel, the freight lines continued to grow. In 1976, following the 1970 bankruptcy of the Penn Central System, the railroad obtained trackage rights over former Penn Central lines to Ashtabula Harbor, Ohio, located on Lake Erie and through Sharon to Shenango, Pa. The railroad was purchased by CSX Transportation in 1993.
Also known as the "Little Giant"; formed on 11 May 1875; headquarters located in Pittsburgh, Pa.; line connected Pittsburgh in the east with Youngstown, Ohio at nearby Haselton, Ohio in the west and Connellsville, Pa. to the east.
The Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad (PLE) was chartered in 1875 in Pittsburgh, Pa. The organization was unable to raise enough capital to begin actual construction of the line until 1877, when William H. Vanderbilt purchased a substantial amount of PLE stock which encouraged additional external investment. The PLE began rail operations in 1879. Vanderbilt soon became a majority stockholder, with the PLE becoming tied to his New York Central System as an independent subsidiary in 1883. The PLE operated from the banks of the Monongahela and Ohio rivers on the Pittsburgh Southside and extended to Youngstown, Oh. The rail line capitalized on the industry of the region, transporting coal, coke, iron ore, and steel products. The PLE was often referred to as the Little Giant, due to the amount of tonnage it hauled in proportion to the total mileage of the line. Through several mergers and acquisitions the PLE would extend its lines south to Connellsville, Pa., accessing that coal production. The PLE name was discarded when it became a subsidiary of CSX Transportation in 1993.

Pennsylvania Railroad. Pennsylvania Railroad branch lines and subsidiaries annual reports and minute books, 1853-1965.
Title:
Pennsylvania Railroad branch lines and subsidiaries annual reports and minute books, 1853-1965.
Dating from 1853 to 1965, the PRR annual reports and minute books comprise two key record series contained within the Pennsylvania Railroad-Central Region Collection. The PRR annual reports are almost exclusively printed, while the minute books are largely handwritten with some typescript and printed articles of incorporation, merger agreements, and notices of stockholders' meetings. These volumes document the executive administration of various PRR subsidiaries and branch lines, especially financial operations and investment practices, and relations between the railroad's operational managers and PRR shareholders. Several key PRR subsidiaries are covered by the annual reports and minute books: the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad Company; the Buffalo, New York, & Philadelphia Railway Company; the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne, and Chicago Rail Road Company; and the Clearfield Bituminous Coal Corporation. Written or typed minutes of subsidiaries' board meetings are available for most of the PRR, New York Central, and Clearfield Bituminous Coal Corporation subsidiaries. A single volume of minutes often contains the records of two or more subsidiary short lines cheaply laid in the 1860s and 1870s that found that they couldn't support themselves as the 1880s and 1890s began. Printed annual reports to the stockholders often contain several years bound in one volume and are available for all of the companies and a great many subsidiaries.

Helen Clay Frick Foundation. Helen Clay Frick Foundation archives, 1862-1987.
Title:
Helen Clay Frick Foundation archives, 1862-1987.
The Helen Clay Frick Foundation Archives contains material reflecting the business and financial activities of Henry Clay Frick (1849-1919) with particular relevance to Pittsburgh and the western Pennsylvania region. These materials highlight Frick's ascent into prominence during a period of American industrial growth in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. The resources range from Frick's first businesses, including his first coal firm, H.C. Frick & Company, to correspondence between Frick and Andrew Carnegie, which also includes Frick's negotiations that facilitated the mega merger that formed United States Steel Corporation in 1899. The material also addresses aspects of business specific to the late ninetieth century coke industry, including bituminous coal mining, beehive ovens, and railroad transportation. The Helen Clay Frick Foundation Archives contains 28 series that date from 1881 to 1987; the majority of the materials date from 1881 to 1914, when Frick was most active in the coal and steel industry in Pittsburgh. The majority of the material is categorized into four types of records: administrative material, financial records, legal material, and ephemeral items. The administrative material are generally made up of correspondence, letterpress copybooks, memoranda, invoices, company charters, meeting minutes, by-laws, deeds, contracts, certificates, pamphlets, proposals, specifications, labor costs, property assessments, building construction records, architectural drawings, blue prints, newspaper clipping scrapbooks, atlases, and plat maps. The financial records consist of receipts, reports, statements, stock accounts, taxes, bills, lease matters, rent and building costs, cashbooks, sales journals, accounts payable receipts, mortgages, estate/property values, as well as profit and loss statements. There is a small amount of legal material which has records of court cases, case notes, court rulings, and attorney services. The ephemera items include keys, stone samples, printing plates, and post cards. Further description is available at the series and subseries level.

Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad Company. Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad Company records, 1860-1999.
Title:
Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad Company records, 1860-1999.
The Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroad Company Records document the management and operation of the company throughout its long history, from around 1850 to 1999. These materials contain information about Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroad (P&LE), as well as the various branch lines that, along with P&LE, were controlled by the New York Central Railroad System from 1883 until 1968, and later by Penn Central from 1968 until 1970. Regardless of the large number of materials, this is not a complete record of P&LE history, or of its subsidiaries. The manuscript material includes a large number of bound ledgers of meeting minutes, statistics, operational logs, and reports. Many ledgers contain letter or telegraph correspondence between personnel, external companies, subsidiaries, and employees. Employee records comprise card indexes, files, and folders of terminated, retired, furloughed, and deceased employees as well as applications, recommendations, rates of pay, sick and vacation time, and union agreements. Legal documents consist of claims and grievances against P&LE by employees, companies, cities, and citizens; articles of agreement concerning the lease of equipment, land, and tracks; and contracts between P&LE, its subsidiaries and associate companies. Publications scattered throughout the collection include federal regulations (many of the Interstate Commerce Commission), company safety policy and handbooks, national railroad magazines, and multi-railroad agreements. Bulletins and notices were distributed within the company and sometimes are referred to as 'pink sheets.' There is also a substantial presence of blueprints of buildings and tracks and schematics for equipment and machinery. The collection contains over two thousand feet of 16mm motion picture film depicting railroad work crews in the 1930s, various construction projects, a parade of boats on the Monongahela River, and safety and training procedures. Audio cassettes relate to personal safety of employees and the operation of certain railroad equipment. Slides depict safety training exercises and methods, hazardous materials, and other standard safety practices. The film, cassettes, and slides are noted in the Training Materials series. Only the Photographs series in this collection has been processed. The remaining materials have been housed in records boxes, manuscript boxes, filing cabinets, or paper wrappings and still remain in their original folders or none at all. All materials are available for on-site review.
