Doble served as chairman of the General Committee of the New York Central Railroad (Lines West) for the Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen, ca.1931-1962. Signalmen are involved in expediting and controlling traffic while maintaining safe conditions.

Doble joined the Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen in 1924, became a chief signalman, then a general chairman of the Brotherhood. His jurisdiction extended to local unions of the "Big Four" railroads, the Michigan Central Railroad, the New York Central Railroad, the Peoria and Eastern Railroad, and foremen and inspectors of the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad.
