Letters received and other papers chiefly regarding Purcell, 1881-1902
Title:
Letters received and other papers chiefly regarding Purcell 1881-1902
William Hayman Cummings was an English organist, composer, singer and writer, author of Purcell (1881), a biographical dictionary (1892) and other works about English music. 29 ALS from 17 correspondents commenting about Cummings's book, Purcell, then sending more information about Henry Purcell and his family and contemporaries. Other papers includes notes on these subjects, some probably in the hand of Cummings and some probably originally enclosed with the correspondence. Correspondents include William Chappell and G.A. Crawford. Removed from the W.H. Cummings scrapbooks after microfilming.

Title:
Alexander Mackay-Smith Collection 1689-1827
The Mackay-Smith Collection's greatest strength is in contemporary editions of 18th-century instrumentalmusic, particularly trio sonatas. The collection shows similarity to the music section of Jefferson's catalogue of1783. The trio sonatas of Carlo Antonio Campioni (1720-1788), one of Jefferson's favorite composers, are especiallywell represented.

Finney, Theodore M. (Theodore Mitchell), 1902-1978. Theodore M. Finney Music Manuscript Collection, ca. 1700-1850.
Title:
Theodore M. Finney Music Manuscript Collection, ca. 1700-1850.
The collection consists of music manuscripts dating from around 1700 to the middle of the 19th century. Collected and bound by various former owners, the music manuscripts include anthems, glees, sacred and secular songs, masses, opera arias, chamber music, didactic works, and music for keyboard, harp, guitar, and mandolin. In addition, there is a manuscript catalog of an unidentified private music library, dated 1816 (Finney 26). The order and numbering of the volumes are Finney's. Among the major composers represented are Tallis, Purcell, Corelli, Handel, J.C. Bach, and Haydn. For the most part the manuscripts are the work of copyists, but holographs include William Boyce's arrangement in full score of Purcell's Te Deum & Jubilate, Samuel Wesley's Magnificat and Carmen Funebre, Adalbert Gyrowetz's piano trio op. 22, and possibly Maurice Greene's Te Deum. Also among the more important items are several volumes of English sacred music and a full score for Handel's Coronation Anthems in the hands of Handel's principal copyists, bearing the bookplate of the Oxford Musical Society (where Handel conducted a performance of the work). An index of composers, authors, copyists, and former owners is included in the finding aid.

Title:
Hanover royal musicarchive 1651-1951 1770-1870
The Hanover Royal MusicArchive consists of printed and manuscript music, printed books about music, and related materials assembled by Ernest Augustus, King of Hanover, and hissuccessors. A significant component originated in England and concerns musicalactivity of several children of George III, circa 1770-1837, particularlyErnest Augustus, then Duke of Cumberland, and Princess Augusta, as well asPrince George of Cumberland, son of Ernest Augustus and later Georg V, King ofHanover. These materials moved to Hanover, apparently circa 1837 when ErnestAugustus succeeded William IV as King of Hanover. In Hanover, the collectionwas expanded by Ernest Augustus and Georg V, and much of the present contentrelates to music in the Hanoverian court through the mid-nineteenth century. While most materials date circa 1770-1870, a few items extend this span fromthe seventeenth through the mid-twentieth century.

Finney, Theodore M. (Theodore Mitchell), 1902-1978,. Quatuor / by Banister.
Title:
Quatuor / by Banister. [ca. 1690]
A set of four instrumental part books collecting pieces of theater music by various composers, such as Henry Purcell, John Banister the younger and Godfrey Finger, and dating from approximately 1690. Volumes are labeled "Violino: Imo," "Violino: IIdo," "Tenor" and "Basso cont:." A detailed description of the identifiable pieces was published by former owner and music scholar Theodore M. Finney and suggests that there appears to be a close relationship between these volumes and Thomas Britton.

Saying that he is about to publish a collection of "the masterly Cathedral Compositions of Purcell," that Shield, Crotch, J.B. Cramer, Thos. Adams, George Smart, Attwood, Jacob, and Stevens have all agreed to help, adding that he would like to find an authentic likeness of Purcell--the two best he has seen are an oil painting formerly owned by Dr. Burney and a drawing by Godfrey Kneller--, asking if Gwilt knows to whom the drawing was sold at Mr. Bartleman's sale, suggesting that it might still belong to Mr. Holloway, who made an engraving from it, etc.

Title:
Early notices of Shakespeare [manuscript], compiled ca. 1860.
Scrapbooks of allusions to Shakespeare, compiled by J.O. Halliwell-Phillipps for the Earl of Warwick, containing mostly print material, mostly cuttings from 17th century plays, also includes original manuscripts, a few tracings of documents, forgeries, some illustrations removed from books and some music. Volumes 1 and 2 are all print material. Volume 3 is also all print except for one Collier transcript about John Shakespeare (leaf 30). Volume 4 along with some print material contains 2 bills, one for funeral expenses, from the 1730s. Five transcripts in Ireland's hand of his own forgeries of Shakespeare can be found at the end of volume 4 and the beginning of volume 5. Volume 5 also includes a facsimile/tracing of D. Forman's manuscript in the Ashmolean Museum, as well as more print material. Volume 6 contains all print material some with notes said to be by Philip, Earl of Pembroke, but have been identified as those of Baron Stanhope of Harrington. Volume 4 also contains illustrations, including woodcuts of soldier's holding arms from Gheyn's The Exercise of Armes, 1619 (STC 11812) and woodcuts from Geiler's Nauicula siue speculum fatuorum. Volumes 4 and 6 also contain two different songs sung by Mrs. Dyer from Purcell's opera The Faiery Queen.
