Physician and physiologist.
A native of Lebanon, Connecticut, Beaumont was certified to practice medicine by the Third Medical Society of Vermont in 1812. He served in the army during the War of 1812 and from 1819 to 1839 was an army medical officer. During that time he served at posts in the midwest including Fort Mackinac, Michigan; Fort Niagara; Fort Howard in Green Bay; Fort Crawford, Wisconsin; and Jefferson Barracks near St. Louis. On several occasions from 1825 to 1833, Beaumont studied the digestive process through a gunshot-wound patient he had treated in 1822 and whose wound had never fully healed, leaving Dr. Beaumont with unique access to the patient's stomach. Beaumont is known as the father of gastric physiology. He wrote Experiments and observations on the gastric juice and the physiology of digestion (1833).
U. S. Army surgeon.
William Beaumont was born in Lebanon, Connecticut in 1785. He obtained a primary education and remained on his family's farm until he reached the age of 21. During the winter of 1806-1807, he traveled to Champlain, New York, to live with his brother Samuel, and teach school. During this period he borrowed medical books from Dr. Seth Pomeroy of Burlington, Vermont. In 1810 Beaumont informed his parents that he would begin studying "physic" as an apprentice to Dr. Benjamin Chandler of St. Albans, Vermont, while supporting himself by store keeping. After receiving his license to practice in Vermont in 1812, Beaumont enlisted in the U.S. Army as a military surgeon for three years. Following five years in private practice in Plattsburgh, he was commissioned as a post surgeon at Fort Mackinac, Michigan. There he saved the life of wounded fur trapper Alexis St. Martin. St. Martin was left with a fistula to his stomach. Beaumont became celebrated as a scientist through publication in 1833 of his long series of experiments on digestion that he performed on St. Martin. In 1834 Beaumont was sent to St. Louis, where resigned from the military five years later and spent the remainder of his life in private practice.
Physician and United States Army surgeon. Pioneer in study of and experimentation in functions in the human stomach.
Army surgeon noted for his scientific research on the human digestive process.

Beaumont, William, 1785-1853. William Beaumont papers, 1763-1891.
Title:
William Beaumont papers, 1763-1891.
The collection is comprised primarily of family correspondence and deeds. The correspondence paints a vivid picture of Beaumont's formative years in Champlain, Plattsburgh, and at Mackinac Island. Contained within this collection are letters from William Beaumont to his parents, Samuel and Lucretia Beaumont, and to his brothers Samuel Jr. and Abel, as well as some family correspondence written by Abel and Samuel, Jr. Although there is no specific mention of Beaumont's experimentation on Alexis St. Martin in these letters, Beaumont does discuss, in a letter of November 18, 1834, the publication of his book, Experiments and Observations on the Gastric Juice and the Physiology of Digestion (1833). Letters in this collection offer the reader insight into family and military life and medicine during the early 19th century. Through his correspondence, his affection and devotion for both his family and his patients is evident. Also part of the collection are eighteenth-century family deeds to land in Lebanon, Connecticut and Lucretia Beaumont's 1799 copybook in which she practiced penmanship.

Business and personal correspondence, which forms the bulk of the collection, largely concerns legal problems, land grants and purchases, Indian affairs, the fur trade, governmental activities, and personal news. Among the early papers in the collection are a few relating to the fur trade, particularly the operations of the Abbott brothers, Samuel, James, and Robert, centering around Detroit and Mackinac, Michigan; controversies before the merger of fur companies in 1821; and the bankruptcy of the American Fur Company. Beginning with Martin's removal to Green Bay, Wisconsin in 1827 there are numerous business and legal papers relating to his work as an attorney for local and eastern clients, particularly as that of a collection agent. Legislative papers contain correspondence, 1845-1847, when he served as territorial representative in Washington, on Wisconsin problems such as land claims, mineral rights, pensions, appointments, elections, and internal improvements. Letters from constituents contain many references to Wisconsin politics. Letters during the Civil War describe his service as a United States army paymaster and after the Civil War deal with his problems as Indian agent for the Menominee, Stockbridge, and Oneida Indians and include comments on claims, annuities, and treaties. Correspondents include William Beaumont, Florimond Bonduel, Ramsay Crooks, Henry Dodge, George Dewey, Lucius Fairchild, Alexander J. Irwin, Andrew Jackson, James T. Lewis, Lucius Lyon, Philetus Sawyer, Horatio Seymour, John B. Sheldon, and Daniel Webster. Other papers contain information on the career of James D. Doty. Material on the Fox River Improvement Company includes correspondence with Hiram Barney, an Eastern investor in the company, some claims of Martin's against the state, and a few record books. After 1865, Martin's correspondence largely concerns the financial difficulties of the company and his efforts to meet his obligations which continued until his death. Martin was one of the promoters of the Bank of Wisconsin at Green Bay, Wisconsin and for a time its president. There are checks, notes, and drafts relating to this bank and to the Farmers' and Mechanics' Bank of Detroit, Michigan and letters by Henry Stringham, cashier of the Wisconsin bank, advising and commenting on banking practices. The development of the townsite of Milwaukee, Wisconsin is enlarged upon in communications from Solomon Juneau and others, and in records of sales of lots, tax receipts, and statements of accounts. References to Indian affairs are found in traders' claims, in a letter by George Boyd in 1841, and in some Stockbridge correspondence in the 1870s. Among miscellaneous subjects touched upon are Antimasonry in Michigan Territory, the organization of the Episcopal Church in Green Bay, Wisconsin, the building of the first Milwaukee, Wisconsin courthouse, lake transportation, and land sales in the Lake Michigan region. Personal papers include correspondence with relatives and friends in Martinsburgh, Lowville, and elsewhere in New York State, and scattered account books, 1836-1848. There are some reminiscent articles written by Martin towards the end of his life and a folder of rough drafts of reminiscences by Mrs. Martin. A group of letters, land patents, and other legal documents of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries relates to ancestors of Mr. and Mrs. Martin in the colony of New York prior to the American Revolution. Also present are diaries of Mrs. Martin (nee Elizabeth Smith) kept before and after her marriage. Letters from their son, Leonard Martin, describe the work and life of a surveyor of the Northern Pacific Railroad in Montana, 1871-1872. Letters, 1873-1874, received by Leonard concern his work as assistant engineer for the Fox River Improvement project of the U.S. government. The correspondence of daughters Deborah and Sarah Martin includes many letters pertaining to the State Historical Society of Wisconsin and notes, biographical sketches, and genealogical data relating to Brown County, Wisconsin. Some papers also support the disputed claim of Mrs. Martin's brother, Admiral Melancton Smith, to credit the capture of the rebel ram Manassas while he was serving as captain of the warship Mississippi. The processed portion is summarized above and is described in the register. Additional accessions date 1825-1885 and are described below.

Also includes photocopies of correspondence, 1888-1919, between Osler (1849-1919) and William Dock (1860-1951): 103 items of unknown provenance, other than the certain fact they were found among collections acquired by a former Rare Book Librarian, who assigned a rare collections accession number, 1993-029. Since the original autograph items in PC023 were also of varied provenance, there was no reason not to store these photocopies in the same collection)

Title:
William Beaumont papers, 1807-1879. 1807-1879.
The Beaumont collection includes correspondence, notebooks and casebooks, pre-publication drafts, notes, certificates, press clippings, and legal and financial documents. The major subject of the collection is the Alexis St. Martin case and the pioneering and controversial experiments on St. Martin that illuminated the physiology of human digestion. The papers also document Beaumont's strong influence on his family including his wife, parents, siblings, and children; his career as a U. S. army surgeon, 1812-1939; land speculation in Plattsburgh, Green Bay and Saint Louis; and his service on the U.S. Army Board and professional associations. Of local interest is the correspondence on Beaumont's medical practice in Saint Louis, 1939-1853; two malpractice lawsuits; the Saint Louis Medical College where Beaumont served as a faculty member; and the politics in the Saint Louis medical community. The manuscript collection consists of three document series arranged predominantly in chronological order. Series 1 includes all items that were described in the 1968 Index. For reasons never discussed in the 1968 Index, many items in the gift of papers to Washington University were omitted from its elaborate analysis. These items now make up Series 2 and Series 3 of the Beaumont Papers. Beaumont's notebooks are compiled into Series 2. Newspaper clippings and book reviews that were once in the possession of Beaumont and his family make up Series 3.
