Title:
Charles Henry Hart letters to McClure's Magazine [manuscript], 1896 Mar 13 and Apr 1.
1896 Mar 13. To Editors of McClure's Magazine. Hart suggests a series of articles to add to the magazine's "Human Documents," which he is sure will not only be popular, but will also draw the attention of students of American history and collectors of Americana. He proposes the reproduction of portraits of important characters in American history, with brief information on the history of each portrait, its whereabouts and the artist. He lists all of the advantages of reproducing the portraits directly from the canvas, and remarks how interesting it would be to see grouped together all of the portraits of all of the Presidents. If the prospect is appealing he will call. Letter is written on the back of a circular of the Committee on Retrospective Art of the World's Columbian Exposition. 1896 Apr 1. To J. S. Phillips, Esq., McClure's Magazine. Hart thanks Phillips for his note of the 26th and sends him a tentative list of names for his consideration, which can be added to, altered or amended. He says that the great advantage in a series of this character that it could be stopped at any moment or it could be kept up "for evermore" and the supply would not equal the demand. He sends a list of 25 names on the other side, "mainly to set the ball in motion."

Lorrain objects to the dropping of the subtitle of his reminiscences ("Personal reminiscences of the Emperor Napoelon III and of the Court of the Tuileries, 1867-1870"). Although S. S. McClure has assured him the omission will not make any difference his future plans depend on the success of the publication. He will bring pictures and illustrations for the memoir, notes that he is quite ill and wants a proof of the wax-cast.

Title:
Letters to S.S. McClure and [John Sanburn] Phillips, and cancelled check, 1895 July 14 and July 22, 1898 May 14, n.d.
July 14, 1895, letter to Messrs S.S. McClure Ltd. states "The Messrs Putnam have consented to a proposition for the serial publication of 'The Countess Bettina' in England - should you be able to secure it, - conceding to the author 90% of that proposition." July 22, 1895 letter to Mr. [John Sanburn] Phillips asking him to "send 'The Pretty Wit of Captain Paul Jones' to Scribners, ... if you don't want the story." He says that "The story is going on merrily, telling itself so fast that I cannot put it to paper fast enough ... I believe I shall have it ready for you certainly August 7th." Undated letter to Messrs. McClure boasts of being able to deliver a story, "The Aide de Camp," "a week earlier than scheduled." He describes it as "about as long as 'Bettina' ... but ... much better, in interest, and in workmanship. This is the first of the three stories Mr. McClure was good enough to say he would like to see this year." He speaks of his next story as "next, longest⁵having the best topic, will be that on the Rebellion." Undated letter to Mr. McClure has a photograph of himself attached, with the caption "Clinton Ross, author of 'A Dare to Bismarck.'" He sees "a way of working out the idea much more felicitously of the story of The French Alliance" and will send it "Tuesday or Wednesday next week in the new form." A cancelled check for 15 dollars, dated May 14, 1898, drawn on the Central National Bank of the City of New York to the order of Clinton Ross is stamped S.S. McClure Company and signed by Albert B. Brady, Secretary. It is endorsed by Clinton Ross on the reverse.
