July 14, 1895, letter to Messrs S.S. McClure Ltd. states "The Messrs Putnam have consented to a proposition for the serial publication of 'The Countess Bettina' in England - should you be able to secure it, - conceding to the author 90% of that proposition." July 22, 1895 letter to Mr. [John Sanburn] Phillips asking him to "send 'The Pretty Wit of Captain Paul Jones' to Scribners, ... if you don't want the story." He says that "The story is going on merrily, telling itself so fast that I cannot put it to paper fast enough ... I believe I shall have it ready for you certainly August 7th." Undated letter to Messrs. McClure boasts of being able to deliver a story, "The Aide de Camp," "a week earlier than scheduled." He describes it as "about as long as 'Bettina' ... but ... much better, in interest, and in workmanship. This is the first of the three stories Mr. McClure was good enough to say he would like to see this year." He speaks of his next story as "next, longestāµhaving the best topic, will be that on the Rebellion." Undated letter to Mr. McClure has a photograph of himself attached, with the caption "Clinton Ross, author of 'A Dare to Bismarck.'" He sees "a way of working out the idea much more felicitously of the story of The French Alliance" and will send it "Tuesday or Wednesday next week in the new form." A cancelled check for 15 dollars, dated May 14, 1898, drawn on the Central National Bank of the City of New York to the order of Clinton Ross is stamped S.S. McClure Company and signed by Albert B. Brady, Secretary. It is endorsed by Clinton Ross on the reverse.
