Louis Verneuil (1893-1952), French playwright, actor, director, and dramatist, was the author of such works as "La vie merveilleuse de Sarah Bernhardt" and "Affairs of state."
French dramatist and poet.
French playwright.
"The firm of Ricordi was founded in Milan in 1808 by Giovanni Ricordi (1785-1853); it was directed from 1853 to 1888 by his son Tito (1811-1888), from 1888 to 1912 by Tito’s son Giulio (1840-1912) and from 1912 to 1919 by Giulio’s son Tito (1865-1933). The firm was managed from 1919 to 1940 jointly by Renzo Valcarenghi and Carlo Clausetti, from 1940 to 1944 by Valcarenghi and Alfredo Colombo and from 1944 to 1952 by Colombo, Eugenio Clausetti and Camillo Ricordi. In 1952 it became a limited company, under the presidency first of Colombo, then of Guido Valcarenghi (from 1961), Carlo Origoni (from 1976), Gianni Babini (from 1982) and Guido Rignano (from 1988 to 1995). In June 1995 the company merged with BMG Ariola forming a new company BMG Ricordi S.p.a., of which Casa Ricordi is a division managed by Mimma Guastoni."
"During his first decade in business Giovanni Ricordi issued an average of 30 publications a year; in his second the yearly average was about 300. This expansion was largely the result of a succession of contracts starting from December 1814, which he won as prompter and exclusive copyist to La Scala, giving him the right to publish the music performed there; in 1825 he purchased their entire musical archives. In 1816 he had a similar contract as copyist to the Teatro Re, and in the 1830s and 1840s concluded highly favourable agreements with the opera houses of Venice and Naples. By the end of 1837 he had not only purchased the stock and plates of Ferdinando Artaria but was able to boast more than 10,000 publications, the exclusive rights to operas written for Milan and Naples, an archive of 1800 autograph manuscripts and a branch in Florence."
"In the entire history of music publishing there has been no other firm that through its own efforts, astuteness, initiative and flair has achieved a position of dominance such as Ricordi enjoyed in Italy in the 19th century, nor of power such as it has been able to maintain (on account of its rights on Verdi’s and Puccini’s operas) in the 20th." -- Richard Macnutt.

Title:
Frederick R. Koch collection, 1640-1983.
The Frederick R. Koch Collection consists of musical, literary, and historical materials collected by Frederick R. Koch, principally through purchases at public auctions, 1979-1986. Including individual items, concentrations of related materials, and several extensive archives, the collection is a broad and deep resource for study of the lives and works of a range of composers, authors, and other historical figures. Most materials are music manuscripts, literary manuscripts, drawings, and correspondence of European, English, and American composers, authors, and artists. Also present are historical manuscripts, photographs, albums, and other papers. While the contents of the collection span the seventeenth to twentieth centuries, most date from the nineteenth to early twentieth centuries, with particular strengths in French, Italian, German, and British music, French literature, and British art.

Moser, Gustav von, 1825-1903. Eine kranke Familie : Posse in 3 Akten, ca. 1870, 1890-1895.
Title:
Eine kranke Familie : Posse in 3 Akten, ca. 1870, 1890-1895.
The German play, which was co-written by Moser and Wilhelm Drost, and first published in 1862, is an adapation of the French play Les Gens nerveux, by Barrière and Sardou. The file contains materials related to rehearsal and performance, including a published copy (Berlin: Eduard Bloch, n.d.; Eduard Bloch's "Volks-Theater" Nr. 42), which has been annotated as a prompt-book; and 10 handwritten role books, for the following parts: Nagel, Rentier; Minna, seine Frau; Julius, Student; Emma; Wendel, Kaufmann; Qualm, Barbier; Dorothea; Marie; Johann, Diener; and Jette, Dienstmädchen. (The play has 3 additional roles: Dr. Wehlau, Arzt; Commis; and Lehrling.) The published copy likely dates from the early 1870s. All of the items are marked as the property of Theodor Bloch (the published copy bears a handwritten label and the role books are stamped with Bloch's name and address). Bloch was active in German-language theater in Philadelphia from at least the early 1870s until the mid 1890s, first as an actor and later as a prompter, and he also ran a theater lending library. The role books all have a similar appearance and appear to be written out in the same hand. Names of actors and actresses written on the covers of role books are recognizable from the casts of other German-language plays performed in Philadelphia and together suggest a cast that would have performed around 1890 or 1891. The names of that same cast are written to the left of the character list in the published copy. A different cast is also noted to the right of the character list, but those names could not be placed. (The collection's holdings of theater newspapers and playbills contain no reference to this play.)

Comprise correspondence, manuscripts, notes, scrapbooks, clippings, receipts, music scores, and a collection of autographs that reflect Smith's theater career and his interest in book and manuscript collecting primarily from 1890 to 1930. Smith collaborated on operas and operettas with Reginald DeKoven, Victor Herbert, Irving Berlin, Ivan Caryl, Jerome Kern, and John Philip Sousa, among others. His correspondence with his collaborators, actors, actresses, and publishers centers around his theater projects and book and manuscript collecting. Smith's own correspondence is interfiled with autograph letters he collected by well-known writers and actors such as Joanna Baillie, Dion Boucicault, George Coleman, Robert William Elliston, David Garrick, Charles John Kean, and Mitchell Kennerley. Writings by Smith include over fifty scenarios, synopses, and musical plays, as well as fictional pieces, articles about collecting books and manuscripts, and notes and drafts for A Sentimental Library (1914), Smith's catalog of his own library. Scrapbooks contain clippings and bibliographic information about a number of authors, including Lord Byron, Dickens, Shakespeare, and Thackeray.

Frederick R. Koch collection, 1640-1983
