French naval officer.
French naval commander.
Charles-Henri, Comte d'Estaing (1729-1794) was a Vice-Admiral of France, Lieutenant General of the Armies of the King, Commander-in-Chief of his most Christian Majesty's Forces in America. "The King (Louis XVI) never had a subject who loved him better, and who is a more worthy citizen," remarked John Paul Jones in 1778 of d'Estaing's long military career in service to France. In August 1779, d'Estaing sailed from Santo Domingo to Savannah with a large fleet transporting 4,000 land troops to aid the Americans.
Estaing was a French military officer (both Army and Navy) who participated with the Americans against the British in the American Revolutionary War. He later served in the National Assembly after the French Revolution, but for his support for the French royal family he was tried and guillotined.

Title:
Louis-Antoine de Bougainville journals, 1778-1782.
Two sets of holograph journals kept by a French naval commander during the American Revolution. The first set, dated 1778 Apr 13 - 1779 Dec 21, is written in fifteen notebooks numbered 1-16, lacking number 12, and cover the entire cruise of the fleet of Admiral d'Estaing from its departure from Toulon in April 1778 to its return to France in December 1779. The journals are a daily record carrying navigational details and personal observations while recording the movements of the French fleet, including abortive operations against the British at Newport, Rhode Island, the fleet's anchorage in Nantasket Roads [Boston harbor], and operations against Savannah. The missing 12th notebook, lost sometime in the 19th century, covers the period from 18 June to 26 July, 1779, while the fleet was in the Antilles. The journals include English passages from the Boston Gazette and British reports, and include a copy of an order from d'Estaing. They are accompanied by a pen-and-ink and watercolor map of Boston harbor showing the French fleet riding at anchor. The second set, dated 1781 Mar 22 - 1782 May 1, is written in nine notebooks. The journals begin with the departure of the fleet from Brest for the Antilles, where it stayed until August, when it sailed to the North American coast to provide assistance to the French and American armies. The journals carry a description of the battle of the Chesapeake, councils of war on board de Grasse's ship, the battle of Yorktown, victory celebrations, the departure of the fleet for the Antilles, where he records the Battle of the Saintes, later a matter of dispute between Bougainville and de Grasse.

Bougainville, Louis-Antoine de, comte, 1729-1811. Louis-Antoine de Bougainville journals, 1778-1782.

Estaing, Charles Henri, comte d', 1729-1794. Charles-Henri, Comte d'Estaing papers, 1778.
Title:
Charles-Henri, Comte d'Estaing papers, 1778.
The Comte d'Estaing Papers contain five items which refer to d'Estaing's service in aiding the Americans against the British in 1778. Included are two letters from the Comte to General George Washington updating Washington on naval activity in Long Island sound off the coast of Connecticut, August and September 1778. D'Estaing's mission is outlined in these letters, to clear the sound of all English vessels and attack Newport, Virginia. He informs Washington on the status of his men, the destruction of English vessels, and the delays of the attack. A copy (written in French) of extracts from the Minutes of Congress, October 17, 1778, commends d'Estaing's service. An engraved portrait of Comte d'Estaing, undated, and a presentation plate with the inscription "Offert A la Ville de Savannah, Par Rene Giscard d'Estaing" are in the collection.

Title:
LS, 1779 October 18 : Head Quarters, West Point, to Colonel Daniel Brodhead.
This letter deals with Washington's opinions, plans and orders concerning the fighting between the Americans and the Indians who were under the influence of the British. Washington expresses his strong approval of the expeditions against the Seneca and Muncy Nations by both Brodhead and General Sullivan in which Seneca towns and crops were laid waste and Indian possessions were plundered. Washington at length discusses the proposed expedition against the Indians at Detroit, feeling that the strength of Brodhead's forces were not sufficient to attempt it at present.
