John Laurens letter, 1779.

This collection consists of a letter from John Laurens to his father, Henry Laurens, 1779, reporting on the military situation after the failure of the Savannah siege and stating the necessity of reinforcements. In the letter, Laurens mentions Count d'Estaing. The letter is a photocopy of the original in the New York Public Library.

John Laurens was American soldier and statesman from South Carolina during the American Revolutionary War. Son of the prominent merchant and planter Henry Laurens; best known for his criticism of slavery and his efforts to help recruit slaves to fight for their freedom as U.S. soldiers.
