Letters : to General Joseph W. Brown, 1847.
Edmund Kirby's letters describe the Mexican War, particularly, the bombardment of the castle of Sand Juan Ulúa, the surrender of Vera Cruz, the battles of Cerro Gordo, Churubusco, and the comparative strength of both armies in men and equipment. Because Gen. Brown's son, John, was under Kirby's command, Kirby writes at length about John's gallantry in battle.

Notes and recollections of Army life experiences as a soldier during the two years of the Rebellion [manuscript], 1859-1911.
Cooper gives eyewitness accounts of 1st and 2nd Bull Run, camping on Robert E. Lee's Arlington estate, an unsuccessful Confederate attempt to blockade Washington, and the Battle of Yorktown. He briefly refers to the death of Philip Kearny. The volume also contains miscellaneous entries, 1859 by Augustus L. Melvin, a seaman on the barque Ceres, in which Cooper also sailed. He records brief impressions of Jamestown, St. Helena, lists other ships in the harbor, and sketches the fort and Ladder Hill. The midsection of the volume contains numerous clippings concerning the war, the 1st Massachusetts, and other subjects of interest to Cooper. Several brief articles were written by him and published anonymously particularly one on the Conferate attempt to blockade the Potomac and a sentimental story about a dying rebel from New York.
