In two following letters 1922 December 15 and 20, Kelly makes a brief note about enclosing something (probably a review of Dr. W. W. Keen's book on God and evolution), thanks Tewson for his kind words about the review and tells him that if he ever gets time he will make a little book on evolution like Keen's, only with the Bible first and evolution last. On January 2, 1923, Kelly asks to have copies of the letters which appeared in the Ledger. Niven writes that he was interested in the "talk of single lines of poetry in the 'Salt Shaker' " and appreciates the request for his favorite. He recalls what Carl Sandburg said in the 'Bookman' when he made his selection, and then added, 'there were many other best poems.'" He lists his choice of seven titles, which he doesn't say are "greatests, or most beautiful or bests."

Title:
Letters of Anthony Hope Hawkins to editors [manuscript], 1896, 1897, 1915.
Letters to S. S. Mclure, 1896 Jan 20 and 1897 Oct 5, responde to recent criticism in McClure's publication regarding English writers "forcing upon the public unworthy stories." Hawkins discusses the difficulty obtaining copyright in the United States as well as the relatively small prospective earnings from such a venture. He also notes the way in which many authors have little say about what of their work is "pitchforked onto the market," and cites the law as the primary reason McClure finds English contributions lacking. In addition he gives his approval to McClure's editorial notes, with one or two modifications, discusses a needed correction to one of the proofs and thanks McClure. In a letter, 1915 Jun 9, to W. Orton Tewson, Hawkins writes that he has received Tewson's telegram and thanks him for asking his opinion on Bryan's retirement (over the Lusitania crisis) and the questions it raises, but politely declines to offer his opinion as he is not sufficiently trained in such political affairs and does not believe it the place of Englishmen to judge the affairs of the American nation. He adds that he only writes this in response to Tewson's telegram, and not for publication.

Title:
Articles and letters by Lord Northcliffe [manuscript], 1914-1918.
In an article, 1914 November 13, probably sent to Will Orton Tewson, Northcliffe predicts that the course of the war will last much longer than the "experts" conclude. Although the Germans have retreated, seige warfare could go on indefinitely and the Germans can last much longer commercially. England's situation is comparable to that of the North in the American Civil War with lack of preparation and subsequent raising of a huge army. Ends with praise for Admiral ["Jackie"] Fisher and thanks for generosity of the Americans. In an article for the "New York American" symposium, 1915 January, Northcliffe evaluates the progress of World War I, based on observations in Flanders the previous week. It is his "humble opinion that the German Army has about as much chance of getting to Calais as it has of getting to Chicago." He finds that "the war is only beginning" and that the "German soldiers who began by speaking of [our boys] as 'a contemptible little army' are finding that the quicker witted Anglo-Saxon, with his initiative and with his good physical training gained on the football field is more than a match individually for the heavy, imitative Teuton." He closes by "wondering what will happen in Germany when the Government there permits the truth to leak out." With this article is a covering letter, 1915 January 28, from H.G. Price of the "Daily Mail" to Will Orton Tewson. In a letter to Tewson, 1919 May 24, Northcliffe writes briefly that every "means of linking the British Commonwealth and the great Republic deserves the suppoet of all people of vision."

In a letter to an unidentified recipient, 1906 December 2, Jones discusses dates for coming to Chicago and notes his interest in the success of repertory theaters. In a letter to Will Orton Tewson, 1921 December 21, Jones notes that "Marshall" has been elected to a dining club and that he has had surgery recently. He expresses gratitutde for the Philadelphia Ledger's vindication of his latest book [My dear Wells] and reports that he is working on a new one on G. Bernard Shaw. He is sending the New York Times an article on education which he thinks has had some influence in England and will be glad to send the Ledger occasional articles as well. He also expresses admiration for Atatole France. In a second letter to Tewson, 1924 December 28, Jones replies to a request for an article that he is busy with his book "What is Capital?" but if he has a suitable aritcle at any time he will send it.

In another letter, 1925 June 22, New York, to [Will Orton Tewson] the editor of "The Literary Review," Wheelock refuses to answer the question which line in English poetry is most beautiful.

Osborn encloses a letter from a Professor Bade, a biographer of John Muir [not present], praising Osborn's article on Muir. He explains that he had taken a great deal of pains in the writing of the article and was disturbed by the inclusion of photographs of the Copenhagen jail and Sinclair Lewis, "which are not in accord with Muir." Osborn had sent in a fine photograph of his subject. He concludes by saying that he devoted a great deal of time to the article, but "understands that these illustrations are among the accidents of newspaper make-up, so I am not taking the matter in an unkindly spirit."

Responds to the question "What is the most beautiful line in poetry?" Nichols says that this is an "impossible but delectable task." He believes that the greater the measure of comprehensibility in a beautiful line the more beautiful the line. He believes that one should feel rather than see how beautiful a line is.
