Matisse was born in 1869 to generations of weavers in Le Cateau-Cambrésis, a northern French town whose woolen mills constituted the main industry. He was raised in nearby Bohain, famous for its luxury fabrics. This early exposure to textiles would shape his visual language: examples from his own collection of carpets and cloths from Europe, Africa, and the Middle East would deeply inform his sense of color and pattern and appear in his compositions.
Taking up painting after first studying law, Matisse studied with the Symbolist Gustave Moreau and participated in Paris’s official Salons. His breakthrough as an artist came during the summers of 1904 and 1905, when the bright sunlight of the South of France inspired him—along with artists like André Derain and Maurice de Vlaminck—to create optically dynamic works of bright, clashing colors that led to these artists being derided with the epithet fauves (wild beasts). Known as Fauvism, the work from this period set him on a career-long path that he described as “construction by colored surfaces.”3 This approach remained central through the various stages of Matisse’s body of work—from his rigorous, abstracted paintings of the 1910s to the decorative, sunlit interiors of his so-called “Nice period” of the 1920s to the radically innovative cut-outs of his last decade.

Elise Stern Haas Family Papers, 1789-1992, (1893-1990)
Title:
Elise Stern Haas Family Papers 1789-1992 (1893-1990)
Contains correspondence, personal and family papers, providing an intimate account of several generations of this distinguished San Francisco family. The bulk of the collection dates from 1893 to 1990, and focuses on the immediate family of Elise and Walter A. Haas, but also includes a significant amount of materials collected by Elise's mother, Rosalie Meyer Stern. Elise's father, Sigmund Stern, was president of Levi Strauss and Co., and nephew of the company founder. The collection spans Elise's life from birth to great grandmother; aside from a few childhood mementos, Walter's contribution to the collection begins with his courtship of Elise in 1914.

Title:
Letters sent to Simon Bussy and family, 1903-1928.
Eight letters (seven original and one copy, dating from 1903 to 1918) to Simon Bussy, a French painter. The letters attest to the long acquaintance between the two men and primarily reflect a dialogue between artists. Also one letter to Bussy's wife, Dorothy Strachey, and two to his daughter, Jane, dating to 1928; all of a social nature. A 1920 letter to Miss Deacon appears unrelated to the Bussys.

Title:
Papers of Gertrude Stein [manuscript], 1922-1955.
Nineteen letters to Edmund R. Brown regard the production and the publication of "Geography and plays." Two letters to William Buehler Seabrook regard his work "The magic island" as well as Stein's and Toklas's life in their summer home in Biligmin par Belley, France. Nine letters to Pierre de Massot regard his and her work, visits, and his preface to "Dix portraits." The bulk of the letters of this collection are directed to Sir Francis Rose regarding their friendship, visits, health, pet dogs "Basket" and "Curley," and especially his work. Stein appreciates his paintings but also offers sarcastic criticism. In addition she gives advice, support, and help with exhibits. There are also letters to book-sellers, letters regarding finances, a letter to Virgil Thomson thanking him for a book, and several letters by Alice B. Toklas on routine matters and one concerning Stein's rift with Henri Matisse. The collection also contains manuscripts of "Some memories of Henri Matisse," and a commentary on "Geography and plays" by Toklas, and "The work of Gertrude Stein," by Sherwood Anderson; two contracts, and several photographs including Carl Van Vechten's photograph of Stein in front of the Rotunda at the University of Virginia, and a photograph of the 1906 Picasso portrait of Stein.

Title:
Morgan Russell archives and collection, 1884, 1908-1959.
The Morgan Russell Archives and Collection documents the artistic output, personal life, intellectual pursuits, gender identity issues, and financial predicaments of artist Morgan Russell from his student years in New York and Paris, beginning in 1906, through his move from France to the United States in 1946. Russell was a relentless chronicler in both words and image, evidenced here by large collections of letters, notebooks, notes, and drawings. Of particular significance are more than three thousand drawings and sketches, ranging from hasty thumbnail sketches to highly finished works on paper made by Russell over several decades, as well as over seventy notebooks kept by the artist in which he recorded his activities and thoughts about himself, his art and the art of others, his finances and life philosophy. Includes correspondence, most of which is addressed to Russell, including significant correspondence with painters Mabel Alvarez, Stanton Macdonald-Wright, and Robert Henri, critic Leo Stein, and novelist and poet Blaise Cendrars; biographical material including address books, immigration and marriage papers, exhibitor's and membership cards; business and financial papers including bank records, bills and receipts; private writings including notebooks, notes and sketches made on loose scraps of papers, essays on aesthetic subjects, creative essays on personal subjects including gender identity, and material relating to his light box studies; writings intended for public use consist of drafts of essays, speeches, and unpublished book manuscripts; printed material including exhibition catalogs (some with Russell's annotations and sketches), press clippings about Russell and others, images from publications and postcards (not used as correspondence), travel-related materials including sightseeing information, maps, passenger lists, and menus; original scores, studies after classical masters, sheet music catalogs, and notes on the relationship between music and painting; photographs including images of Russell, his family, friends and associates, as well as his work in painting and sculpture; drawings and sketches; and finished and/or significant drawings that have been accessioned into the museum's art collection. Letters received : Bordeaux, from André Lhote and Ary Leblond, Paris, 1908-1929.
Two sets of letters written to Frizeau by his Paris agents contain art world news and often detailed descriptions of works of art. Lhote and Leblond had opposing aesthetic orientations and their views often clash (on cubism, for instance). The letters convey the almost complete cultural isolation of Bordeaux at the turn of the century.

Frank Perls papers and Frank Perls Gallery records
Title:
Frank Perls papers and Frank Perls Gallery records
The Frank Perls papers and Frank Perls Gallery records measure 23.8 linear feet and date from 1920-1983, with the bulk dating from 1949-1975. Personal papers include writings, military records, appointment calendars, and photographs. Gallery records date from its opening in 1939 until its closure in 1981 and consist of financial, sales, and legal records; exhibition files; exhibition catalogs and announcements; subject files that contain a variety of correspondence with artists, dealers, galleries, museums, and friends and family, as well as reference materials and photographs; and scrapbooks.Personal papers contain biographical materials, including military records from Perls' service in the army during World War II, personal photographs, documentation on his estate settlement, and numerous short stories. Of particular interest are Perl's stories about his interactions with Pablo Picasso and his work to uncover fraud, fakes, and corruption in the art world. There are also many photographs of Picasso, photographs of family, the war, and Perls, including two original photographs of Perls by Man Ray.Gallery sales, purchases, consignments, insurance appraisals, loans, provenance research, and general business expenses are well documented in the General Business and Financial Records. Perls jointly owned artwork with several galleries in New York, including the Curt Valentine Gallery and M. Knoedler Gallery, and these consignment and joint sales are documented in the invoices. A complete accounting of the Gallery's income and expense reports from 1950-1971 is also be found in this series. Artists extensively documented through financial transactions are William Brice, James Strombotne, and Howard Warsaw. Extensive exhibition files document the gallery's exhibitions and Perl's curatorial work. Files contain varied documentation, such as photographs, catalogs, announcements, and publicity for Frank Perls Gallery shows from 1939 through 1971. Artists represented in this series include Sam Amato, Robert Chuey, Jaques Lipchitz, Pablo Picasso, James McGarrell, and James Strombotne. Files are also found for the two major retrospective exhibitions Perls organized and curated, <emph render="italic">Matisse Retrospective</emph> at University of California, Los Angeles and <emph render="italic">Sixty Years of Picasso Prints</emph> at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, both in 1966. Additional information about these exhibitions is also found in the Subject Files. Subject Files are extensive and varied in name, content, and topic. They consist mostly of correspondence with friends, family, colleagues, artists, critics, galleries and dealers, clients, arts organizations and associations, publications, and others. There are also reference files and exhibition files for exhibitions held at other galleries and museums in which Perls was interested, guest curated, or loaned artwork. The contents of each file unit varies, but many include correspondence, photographs, appraisal records, sales records, invoices, reports, and membership records. The files highlight his close personal relationship with many artists, including William Brice, Rico Lebrun, James McGarrell, Channing Peake, Pablo Picasso, and James Strombotne. Subject Files also contain abundant correspondence with colleagues and family members, including his brother Klaus, who owned and operated the Perls Gallery in New York. Many of the files concern Perl's work with art documentation and authentication. Subject Files have been arranged according to Frank Perls original order. Finally, scrapbooks contain newspaper articles, catalogs, and announcements about exhibitions at the Perls Gallery in New York during the late 1930s and the Frank Perls Gallery in Los Angeles during the 1950s.
