John Betjeman was a poet, journalist, free-lance writer, architectural commentator, broadcaster, and television personality who was popular in England in the 1960s and 1970s and was active in the campaigning for the preservation of churches, buildings and landscape. He was knighted in 1969 and became poet laureate in 1972. During his time at Oxford University, Betjeman's active social life included writers such as Evelyn Waugh, Bryan Guiness, Graham Greene, and W.H. Auden. He married Penelope Chetwood in 1933; and travelled extensively in Europe, North America and the Middle East between 1948 and 1975 giving lectures, slide shows and readings. He was an officer and patron of more than 40 organizations, including Royal Commissions of Fine Art and of Historic Monuments. With all his public exposure, he became Britain's most popular poet by 1962, when his "Collected Poems" sold more than 100,000 copies. His poetry publisher throughout most of his career was John Murray.

Poet, writer, and broadcaster.
English poet.
John Betjeman was an English poet and author. Betjeman was educated at Oxford, although he did not take a degree, and was recognized chiefly as an authority on British architecture before the astonishing success of the publication of his Collected Poems. With this best-selling collection, he proved to be the rare poet who earned both critical acclaim and a genuine popular following. His verse tends to be light, humorous, and nostalgic, with a gentle disdain for the materialism of contemporary life and a yearning for England's past, written in traditional style. He also wrote prose works about architecture, a topical weekly column, literary criticism, and a verse autobiography. He was named Poet Laureate in 1972.

John Betjeman was a British poet, writer, and broadcaster. Poet laureate between 1972 and his death in 1984, Betjeman became a household name through his accessible poetry and appearances on radio and television.
Born in north London to Ernest Edward Betjeman and Mabel Bessie Dawson, Betjeman attended Byron House Montessori School and Highgate junior school (where he was taught by T.S. Eliot) before enrolling in Dragon School and Marlborough College, Oxford, in 1917. Betjeman then attended Magdalen College, University of Oxford (1925-1928), where he was tutored by C.S. Lewis and joined a cohort of other creative-minded students consisting of Evelyn Waugh, Osbert Lancaster, W.H. Auden, Tom Driberg, Edward James, and George Alfred Kolkhorst. Betjeman left Oxford without obtaining a degree, under the pretence of having failed divinity; he rejected joining his father’s furniture manufacturing business, and instead dabbled in a series of positions ranging from insurance broker to cricket instructor and English teacher.
In the 1930s Betjeman's writing career began in earnest, as demonstrated by the publication of his first books, Mount Zion (1931), Ghastly Good Taste (1933), and Continual Dew (1937), and his employment as the assistant editor of Architectural Review (1930-33) and film critic for the Evening Standard (1933-34). Betjeman also wrote and edited a series of guides on British counties for Shell during the mid-1930s. This period was also eventful in Betjeman’s personal life, marking his marriage to Penelope Valentine Hester Chetwode (1910-1986) in 1933, their move to Garrard's Farm, Uffington, Berkshire and the birth of their first child, Paul, in 1937. That same year Betjeman became a member of the Church of England, after a period of experimenting with different faiths.
With the outbreak of the Second World War Betjeman unsuccessfully tried to join the Royal Air Force, and instead served as a press attaché for the United Kingdom in Dublin, Ireland from 1941 to 1942. He then returned to England where he worked for the British Admiralty (1944) and the British Council's Books Department (1944-1946). Betjeman continued to publish during this period, including Old Lights for New Chancels (1940) and New Bats in Old Belfries (1945).
Upon returning to England, Betjeman and his family, which now included their daughter Candida (born in 1942), moved to Farnborough and then to Wantage where Chetwode opened a teashop called King Alfred's Kitchen. Chetwode's conversion to Roman Catholicism and Betjeman's relationship with Elizabeth Cavendish caused a rupture in the couple's marriage. And while Betjeman and Chetwode stayed married and deeply connected throughout their lives, they agreed to separate.
Betjeman's publications during the 1950s, such as A Few Late Chrysanthemums (1954) and Collected Poems (1958), reflect his exploration of themes touched on in his earlier works: an interest in Victorian and provincial architecture, a nostalgia for the past, and religiosity, among others. Collected Poems was popular with critics and the public alike, and helped establish Betjeman's reputation, which was further cemented with Summoned by Bells (1960), an autobiographical account of his early student life and teaching days. While perhaps not as widely read as these works, Betjeman's later writings, such as High and Low (1966), A Nip in the Air (1974), and Collected Poems (1979) were met with pleasure by an audience already devoted to his poetry.
During this period Betjeman received several awards, including the Foyle Poetry Prize (1955 and 1959), the Russell Loins Memorial Fund (1956), Duff Cooper Prize (1959), and the Queen’s Gold Medal for Poetry (1960). Betjeman was also declared Commander, Order of the British Empire (1960) and knighted (1969).
By this time Betjeman was also a beloved radio and television personality. It is perhaps no surprise, then, that his appointment as Poet Laureate in 1972 was much celebrated. While not all of Betjeman's poems written in this capacity were well received, as demonstrated in the criticisms of his hymn for Queen Elizabeth's Silver Jubilee, by this point Betjeman had reached celebrity status and was a figure of intense interest and scrutiny.
During the mid-seventies Betjeman was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. However, he continued to write, publish, and appear on television. One of the last poetry compilations that he published in his lifetime includes Uncollected Poems (1982), which brings together a collection of poems omitted from earlier publications. In addition to his regular programs on radio and television, Betjeman also created a number of television documentaries in the mid- to late-seventies: Metro-Land (1973), A Passion for Churches (1974), Vicar of This Parish (1976), and Betjeman’s Dublin (1979).
After a series of strokes and further deterioration due to Parkinson’s, Betjeman died on May 19, 1984.
Penelope Chetwode published Two Middle-Aged Ladies in Andalusia (1963) and Kulu: The End of the Habitable World (1972), as well as a series of articles. She was born in 1910 to Field Marshal Sir Philip Walhouse Chetwode (first Baron Chetwode) and Lady Alice Hester Camilla Chetwode (née Cotton). Having lived in India while her father served there as Commander-in-Chief, she maintained a lifelong interest in Indian culture and architecture. In fact, Chetwode initially met Betjeman when she submitted an article on the archaeological site Ellora (Maharashtra, India) to Architectural Review at the recommendation of Robert Byron. Throughout her life, Chetwode researched and wrote about Indian architecture and traveled there frequently (often leading tours). She died in the Himalayas in 1986.

MacNeice, Louis, 1907-1963. Louis MacNeice papers, 1960-1969.
Title:
Louis MacNeice papers, 1960-1969.
Letters, manuscripts, and books, including four letters from MacNeice to the poet and editor, Geoffrey Grigson. The manuscripts, either by or about MacNeice, include ten of his last poems. Five of these have been published in SOLSTICE, 1961, and four in THE BURNING PERCH, 1963. Drafts of the first group of poems were written in a personal notebook used by the poet while he worked for the British Broadcasting Corporation. In another similar notebook is a partial draft of his play "The Administrator." Both notebooks are in the collection. Also, an untitled, unpublished poem of seven stanzas, "Tingling [born] the burning island" written on the reverse of a map. Works about NacNeice include manuscripts of a memoir and a radio portrait by Robert Pocock. The portrait has poignant comments and personal reminiscences by twenty of the poet's contemporaries, including John Betjeman, Anthony Blunt, W.H. Auden, E.R. Dodds, Stephen Spender, and others. Both Auden and a literary coterie of Spender, Betjeman, William Empson, and Cyril Connoly taped disucssions of MacNeice and his poetry. Also, thirty-eight books that were in MacNeice's personal library. Most are autographed by him, and many have marked passages and marginal notes. One of the books, Euripides' ALCESTIS AND OTHER PLAYS, is heavily annotated, apparently for a broadcast production.

J.M. Dent & Sons records
Title:
J.M. Dent & Sons records
J.M. Dent & Sons, book publishers of London, England, was founded in 1888 by Joseph Malaby Dent (1859-1926). The company achieved success by selling cheap editions of the classics to the working class. Dent's first major production, the Temple Shakespeare series, was established in 1894, followed in 1906 by Everyman's Library, a series of 1000 volumes. Eventually, Dent's publishing activities expanded to include textbooks, children's books, educational books, self-help books, and travel guides. Dent remained in the forefront of the publishing field by expanding sales to foreign markets, including Australia, Canada, France, New Zealand, South Africa, and the United States. Records include editorial department correspondence with authors, publishing companies, and literary agents; drafts of manuscripts published by Dent; illustrative material used in Dent publications; editorial reports and recommendations; author contracts; copyright agreements; and royalty payments. There are also directors' files containing editorial and personal correspondence; financial materials, including ledgers containing company accounts, cash books, balance sheets, payroll records, equipment inventories, warehouse stock books, and book sales figures; intra-office, memoranda regarding the production of books; legal correspondence and claim statements; material relating to publishing companies that were either affiliated with or subsidiaries of J.M. Dent & Sons; and other materials, including agreements with non-affiliated organizations, address books, work journals, visitors' books, and photographs of Dent buildings and employees. Author files (nine groupings by author name), Company Files, Editor Files, and Serial Files are cataloged separately. Note that files are incomplete, since many items of significant commercial value were sold piecemeal in the 1980s and some files from later years are held by Weidenfeld and Nicholson, which took over the Dent firm in 1986.

The John Pudney Papers, 1850-1977 (bulk 1926-1976), include drafts, notes, printer's copies, galleys, research material, notebooks, diaries, and correspondence. Manuscripts for Pudney's poetry collections and chapbooks include Collected Poems, 1957, and Selected Poems, 1967-1973, as well as proofs for Beyond this Disregard (1943), South of Forty (1943), Spandrels: Poems and Ballads (1969), and Living in a One-Sided House (1976). Manuscripts for early and/or unpublished later poems, 1926-1968, are also present. Some materials such as those for Ten Summers: Poems, 1933-1943 include only notes and correspondence. Manuscripts of Pudney's fiction include The Accomplice (1950), Shuffley Wanderers: An Entertainment (1948), and 'Sleadley' (nd). Materials for such works as The Net (1952), Trespass in the Sun (1957), and Home and Away: An Autobiographical Gambit (1960), include only critical notes and correspondence. Nonfiction materials include the proposal and correspondence for The Thomas Cook Story (1953). These materials, which concern the British temperance movement, consist primarily of the mid-19th century letters and ephemera of Thomas Cook, George Cruikshank, and Emily Ellis. Also present are the manuscript for Lewis Carroll and His World (1976), a working notebook, 1947 on the history of the British Air Force, and numerous materials for the revised edition of The Smallest Room (1954, 1959), a humorous history of sanitation and water closets. The Correspondence series, 1937-1962, primarily concerns the revision of The Smallest Room. Other correspondence also describes the nature of Pudney's other literary endeavors and editorial duties, while letters from George Barker and H.E. Bates are of a more personal nature. Other significant correspondents include Kingsley Amis, Malcolm Arnold, John Betjeman, Benjamin Britten, Jocelyn Brooke, Sir Winston Churchill, Cynthia Coville (Secretary to Queen Mary), Oliver Dawney (Secretary to H.M. Queen Elizabeth), C. Day Lewis, T.S. Eliot, John Lehmann, Compton Mackenzie, Wolf Mankowitz, Lady Ottoline Morrell, Laurence Olivier, J.B. Autograph letters signed (4) : London and Wantage, to Siegfried Sassoon, 1952 Mar. 17, 1952 Apr. 19, 1955 May 6, and 1966 June 17.
Thanking him for a presentation copy of Emblems of Experience and lavishly praising his later work: "I have now read through your poems twice, out loud to myself, which is the best test. The words roll out full of sound and depth like they do in my beloved Tennyson. And the melancholy in every poem of yours, I welcome so warmly. It's like the melancholy of Hood, that constant sense of Eternity"; commenting on individual poems, particularly "The Messenger," which evokes for him his own dying mother; saying that "poetry is looking up"; and supporting Sassoon's decision to publish his poems privately; with mention of Austin Dobson, Andrew Young, R.S. Thomas, and Sidney Maror, Wilde's and Alfred Taylor's friend [19 April 1952]. Sending a book of Andrew Young in a note addressed to "Dear and great poet [the word "great" underlined]" and headed "VOTES FOR WOMEN" [17 March 1952]. Accepting an invitation in a note addressed to "Dear and best of poets" [6 May 1955]. Advising him on recuperating from an operation ("Hospital life has a monastic order about it which I enjoy") and calling him "a masterly craftsman as well as so beautiful a poet" [17 June 1966].

James Lees-Milne papers, 1907-1997
Title:
James Lees-Milne papers 1907-1997
The James Lees-Milne Papers contain correspondence, writings, and other papers of the author. The papers span the years 1907-1997, with the bulk falling between 1930-1997. Series I, Correspondence, is the most extensive, and documents Lees-Milne's relationships with a wide circle of close friends, social and literary acquaintances, publishers, the National Trust, his family and his wife's family. The majority of correspondents are members of the British aristocracy and of Britain's literary elite. Among his most frequent correspondents were John Betjeman, John Spencer Churchill, Patrick Kinross, Edward Sackville-West, Sacheverell Sitwell, James Pope-Hennessy, Harold Nicolson, Rosamond Lehmann, Anne Hill (Lady Anne Gathorne-Hardy), Diana (Mitford) Mosley, Eardley Knollys, John Kenworthy-Browne, Richard Stewart-Jones and Stuart Preston. Other correspondents include Ivy Compton-Burnett, Elspeth Huxley, Lady Kathleen Kennett (widow of Admiral Scott), Alan Pryce-Jones, his literary executor Michael Bloch, and many other literary friends, nobility, and prominent figures in the arts. Series II, Writings, contains manuscripts, contracts, background research material, and reviews of Lees-Milne's published diaries, writings on architectural history, biographies, novels, memoirs, and shorter works such as magazine articles and obituaries. Manuscripts for the earlier diaries are not present; for 1946-47 and 1953-78, there are corrected typescripts that contain material not included in the published versions. The most extensive background material is for Lees-Milne's two-volume biography of Harold Nicolson: this includes a small body of Nicolson's correspondence to his secretary, business associates, several friends, including Leonard and Virginia Woolf, and his wife Vita Sackville-West. Background material for Lees-Milne's The Age of Inigo Jones includes one of the pocket notebooks he carried with him on visits to National Trust properties in the 1940s. Series III, Other Papers, contains certificates, invitations, a list of books read 1962-96, ephemera, which includes a bookplate showing the Lees-Milne coat of arms, and clippings. The majority of the clippings are obituaries of Lees-Milne's friends and family, but also present are interviews with and profiles of Lees-Milne himself, articles about the National Trust, about architecture and historic preservation, and about friends. Series IV, Photographs, contains snapshots of Lees-Milne and his family and friends from his childhood through the 1980s.

Barker, George, 1913-1991. George Barker collection, 1930-1966.
Title:
George Barker collection, 1930-1966.
This collection includes letters, drafts of poems, plays, novels, reviews and lectures, as well as some of Barker's notebooks and a sketch book of drawings. The correspondence largely consists of literary correspondence to Barker covering the years 1933 through 1964. Of particular interest is correspondence from T.S. Eliot, Henry W. Treece, Edwin Muir, John Heath-Stubbs, William Empson, John Betjeman, William Butler Yeats and Stephen Spender. A variety of editors are also represented in the letters, including Julian Symons, Geoffrey Grigson, D. (Derek) S. Savage, John Ackerley, Jack Lindsay, John Lehmann, and Oscar Williams. The collection of poetry manuscripts includes about 50 different individual poems and books in various forms. The proof and galley pages, as well as the published books (see standing volumes), often have Barker's notes, corrections and revisions, giving readers a sense of the poet's composing process, and his need to revise works even after they had been published. Together with his notebooks, which also contain drafts of poems, the poetry manuscripts provide a fine record of the development of many poems. There are a number of unpublished poems in this collection also.

Bridge, Ann, 1889-1974. Papers, 1815-1973, (bulk 1905-1973).
Title:
Papers, 1815-1973, (bulk 1905-1973).
The papers of Lady Mary Dolling Sanders O'Malley, who wrote under the pseudonym Ann Bridge, consist largely of her holograph manuscripts for books published from 1932 through 1973. Peripheral materials include manuscripts grouped as poems, short stories, articles, reviews, and lectures, as well as manuscripts of unpublished works. Also present are several groups of correspondence, scrapbooks of clippings and letters, and a few photographs. Though the papers chiefly concern Lady O'Malley's works and their publication, there is correspondence relating to her experiences as the wife of a diplomat, some of which were incorporated into her writings. These include her impressions while traveling in China (1925-27), Dalmatia (1930), Albania (1936), and Portugal (1946-47). Four very large files of correspondence, chiefly 1953-1954, represent her research for Portrait of My Mother, and contain extensive genealogical information concerning the Brooking, Day, and Sanders families. Among this research material are some originals and transcripts of early family letters, 1815-1898. Numerous letters from family, friends, fans, agents, publishers, and others are present. Among some of the notable correspondents are Lord Edgar Douglas Adrian, Sir Leopold Amery, Maurice Baring, Lord Ronald Gorell Barnes, Lord Max Beaverbrook, John Betjeman, Laurence Binyon, Sir Nevile Bland, Gordon Bottomley, Sir Angus Cunninghame Graham, Lord George Derwent, Morris L. Ernst, E.M. Forster, Sir Ralph Furse, Sir Stephen Gaselee, Oliver St. John Gogarty, Cosmo Gordon Lang (Archbishop of Canterbury), Loelia Mary Grosvenor Lindsay (Duchess of Windsor), Alfred R. John Betjeman collection, 1908-2002, 1936-1984
Title:
John Betjeman collection 1908-2002 1936-1984
The John Betjeman collection documents the personal and professional life of John Betjeman between 1908 and 1990, with the bulk of material dating between 1936 and 1984. The collection provides evidence of Betjeman's career as a writer and broadcaster and consists of correspondence, writings, personal papers, newspaper clippings, audiovisual materials, and a small number of candid photographs. The collection traces Betjeman's creative process through initial scribblings in his notebooks to more formal drafts and the publishing process (as found in galleys and correspondence with editors and publishers). A substantial volume of the correspondence is from Betjeman to his wife Penelope Chetwode and provides insight into their relationship. More broadly, owing to Betjeman's role as Poet Laureate and connection with various authors, the collection is a window into literary life in Britain during the twentieth century. The majority of the collection is comprised of the Duncan Andrews Collection of John Betjeman.

Waugh, Evelyn, 1903-1966. Evelyn Waugh Collection, 1843-1994 (bulk 1910-1966).
Title:
Evelyn Waugh Collection, 1843-1994 (bulk 1910-1966).
The Works Series contains manuscripts for 100 works by Waugh, including drafts of Brideshead Revisited, A Handful of Dust, A Little Learning, and Rossetti: His Life and Works, as well as most of his other novels and many short stories, essays, travel books, reviews, and juvenilia, arranged alphabetically by title. Of particular note are several diaries containing some of his first efforts at short stories at age four and continuing through his early days at boarding school. The Correspondence Series is organized into four subseries. The Outgoing and Incoming Correspondence subseries are composed of mostly personal letters between Waugh and friends or acquaintances, including John Betjeman, his brother, Alec Waugh, and others, as well as a few business letters with Little, Brown, & Company. The Subseries Correspondence by Subject contains exchanges between Waugh and his agent, Sylvia Pankhurst, and Vincent Whelen, grouped topically. The small Third-party Correspondence Subseries contains a few letters between people other than Waugh, including A.D. Power and Dame Edith Sitwell. The Personal Papers Series contains almost forty years of intermittent journals kept by Waugh. These journals contain day-to-day activities as well as thoughts and musings of the author. In addition to the journals, identity papers, lists and notes, and memoranda of agreement between Waugh and Albatross Verlag are present. The Works by Other Authors Series, contains several illuminated volumes from the 19th century collected by Waugh, as well as twentieth century manuscripts written by Harold Acton, Ronald Knox, Alec Waugh, and others. Also included are Stuart Boyle's original pen and ink illustrations for The Loved One and a dissertation by Steven Jervis.

Manning, Hugo. Papers, 1942-1977.
Title:
Papers, 1942-1977.
Comprise correspondence, diaries, notebooks containing untitled poems, a book of sketches, and manuscripts of Manning's major poetical works. The secret sea is represented by several versions, including a version set to music by Denis ApIvor entitled Chorales. Twenty-eight diaries record daily events from 1957-77, and include poetry and drawings. Much of the correspondence simply thanks Manning for sending copies of his poetry, but letters from Henry Miller encourage him to write prose and say "those things which seem incommunicable," while letters from Mario Praz discuss the influence of Borges and T.S. Eliot on Manning's poetry.
