Author Margaret Wade Campbell Deland was born in Allegheny, Penn. She became interested in the plight of unmarried mothers, taking them into her home until they could find proper jobs. For biographical information, see Notable American Women, 1607-1950 (1971).
Margaret Deland was born in Western Pennsylvania, was educated in New York, and lived much of her adult life in New England. A respected and popular writer with an international audience, her analytical tenderness and the moral dilemmas of her characters inspired her audience to think as they read.
Novelist and poet. Margaretta Wade Campbell married Lorin F. Deland in 1880. While she and her husband began providing a refuge for unmarried mothers, Campbell began to write, publishing her first book, The Old Garden and Other Verses, in 1886. She wrote nine novels, several short-story collections, and a two-volume autobiography.
Margaret Deland, born in Allegheny, Pa. in 1857, had a long and prosperous writing career that bridged the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Her cousin, Madeleine Wade Poindexter, also born and raised in Allegheny, lived in Los Angelas, California as a adult.
Margaret Wade Campbell Deland (1857-1945) was an American writer of poetry, short stories and novels. Deland was immensely popular during her own lifetime, a popularity that was born with the publication of her first novel, John Ward, preacher (1888), and continued throughout her lengthy writing career. A member of Boston's intellectual circuit, Deland was also interested in issues of the period such as spiritualism and the rights of women. During the first World War, Deland participated in the relief effort in France for which she was awarded the Legion of Honor cross. Deland's last major work was her autobiography, Golden yesterdays, which she published in 1941 at the age of eighty-four.
Deland was an American author best know for her tales of "Old Chester" grouped about the character "Dr. Lavendar."

The collection consists of manuscript material, including correspondence and writings as well as collected ephemera, printed matter, photographs and original artwork related to the life of Mildred Giddings Burrage, her sister Madeleine, and the Maine art scene. The collection is organized by decade, preserving the original order of the materials as they arrived at Maine Historical Society. The archivist chose to segregate specific topics (while preserving the original order) as seen in Series 3: Collected Materials. These topics include Colby College, Maine Coast Craftsmen, Lincoln County Cultural and Historical Association, as well as original Christmas cards by Maine artists. The collection also includes personal papers of Madeleine Burrage, Mildred's sister and their mother Ernestine. Correspondents include Margaret Deland and Frederic A. Delano.

Title:
Merle De Vore Johnson papers 1849-1935 1926-1935
Merle De Vore Johnson (1874-1935) was an American bibliographer and book collector, as well as a cartoonist and illustrator. He compiled bibliographies on Mark Twain, James Branch Cabell and American first editions, and collected books and pamphlets by and about Woodrow Wilson. His identification of first issues of works by American authors and his bibliographical research established him as the leading authority on American books from 1835 to 1935, especially those published after 1870. He also illustrated many books and contributed illustrations and cartoons to popular magazines. Collection consists of an autograph collection and Johnson's research papers and bibliographic reference files. Autograph collection, 1849-1935, contains letters, calling cards and photographs, chiefly from American writers and artists. Papers, 1923-1933, used in the preparation of the second edition of American First Editions (1932) include enumerative bibliographies and Johnson's correspondence with American authors, publishers and collectors. Bulk of the collection consists of papers used in the preparation of the revised edition of A Bibliography of Mark Twain (1935) and includes descriptive bibliographies and notes on Twain's works. Also, Johnson's bibliographic notes for an unpublished work on British poems and his reference files which contain correspondence, notes, bibliographies, and clippings.

Campbell discusses a planned psychical research meeting at which she is to introduce Dr. William McDougall, the noted British psychologist. "I, if you please, have been bullied, and nagged, and driven, into saying the I would introduce Dr. McDougall!!!! This is about as appropriate as for an ant to introduce Fabre!" Title:
Margaret Deland correspondence 1900-1920
Margaret Wade Deland (1857-1945) was an American author whose works are generally considered to be part of the literary realism movement of the late 19th century. The letters are almost exclusively outgoing, mainly from Deland to Mrs. E. H. Anderson, and to writer and publisher Henry Edward Rood. Letters to Mrs. Anderson are largely social in nature, but also discus plans for speaking engagements. Letters to Rood relate to the publication of her works. Several incoming letters from various parties, including Rood, are also present
