Materials include correspondence, land surveys, mostly of properties in New Jersey, wills, deeds, conveyances, accounts, bills, receipts, invoices, sight drafts, time drafts, promissory notes, memoranda, writs, warrants, depositions, affidavits, briefs, legal opinions, legal arguments, judgements, minutes, and petitions. Series of court papers contains writs, warrants, motions, statements of case, pleas, dockets, indictments, etc., pertaining to court cases prosecuted during James Alexander's time as attorney-general of New Jersey or cases with which he was involved as part of his private practice. Also included in this series are the findings of Coroner's Juries. Court cases documented here include both civil and criminal cases heard before courts in New York and New Jersey, including the New Jersey Court of Chancery, the New Jersey Court of Vice-Admiralty, the New Jersey Supreme Court, the New York Court of Admiralty, and the New York Supreme Court. A letter to his brother Henry Livingston describing the massacre at Cherry Valley, N.Y. Livingston describes the devastation and cruelty inflicted on the residents by the British forces under John Butler. He also provides an anecdote regarding Joseph Brant, the Indian leader. Livingston states that Brant took no part in the massacre and swore to Butler that he "was an enemy from principle but he would never have a hand in massacering the defenseless inhabitants."
