Kane, Gerald John, 1901-1957. Collection of Gerald John Kane - Literary, 1571-1951.
Title:
Collection of Gerald John Kane - Literary, 1571-1951.
This collection is what is known as an autograph collection and Kane spent years, not only collecting autographs of famous people on his own, but also acquiring the collections of other autograph seekers. This material spans multiple centuries and formats: from a 15th century manuscript on vellum to a 1951 typewritten letter. The collection includes accounts, letters, photographs, poems, government papers and royal proclamations, signed by, among others, actors and actresses, authors, explorers, kngs, magicians, queens, politicians, scientists, singers, and soldiers. Many of the famous people in this collection are also to be found in other manuscript collections in the Huntington Library. The majority of the material consists of manuscripts, letters and documents written, or signed, by famous people from the 17th-early 20th centuries; some of the material consists of only fragments or signatures, collected for the autograph value only. Among the correspondents are: Lyman Abbott, Zoë Akins, Henry Mills Alden, Lawrence Alma-Tadema, John Douglas Sutherland Campbell (Duke of Argyll), Charles Babbage, Joanna Baillie, Alice Stone Blackwell, John Bright, Richard Temple Brydges (Duke of Buckingham and Chandos), José Francisco Correia da Serra, Rebecca Harding Davis, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Annie Fields, J.T. Fields, Richard Watson Gilder, W.E. Gladstone, Grace Greenwood, Anna Maria Hall, Samuel Carter Hall, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Henry Irving, Julia Marlowe, Thomas Power O'Connor, Arthur Wellesley Peel (Viscount Peel), Kate Sanborn, Sir Walter Scott, Upton Sinclair, Herbert Beerbohm Tree, Queen Victoria, and Arthur Wellesley (Duke of Wellington). The collection also includes a small number of Ecclesiastical and Financial documents, and a larger amount of Legal, Military, and Misc. documents. The documents include accounts, certificates, commissions, Letters Patent, marriage settlements, receipts, special marriage licenses, wills, and warrants. One of the documents is related to Queen Victoria, and others are signed by various kings of France.

Grant, Mary, d. 1827. Correspondence, 1810-1834.
Title:
Correspondence, 1810-1834.
Correspondence of Mary Grant, daughter of British author Anne MacVicar Grant, begins shortly after the Lowell family stayed with the Grants in Scotland in 1810. Leaving their children with Anne and Mary Grant for boarding and schooling, Francis C. Lowell, Hannah Lowell, and her sister Harriet Jackson travelled in France and England until 1812. Anne and Mary corresponded with the Lowells, reporting on Susan's and John's progress. Later letters of Harriet Jackson and Mary Grant concern mutual friends and social, religious, and literary happenings in Britain and the U.S. Some figures discussed include Joanna Baillie, Thomas H. Gallaudet, Rev. Francis Parkman, and George Ticknor.

Title:
Papers, 1773-1935, (bulk 1890-1930).
Comprise correspondence, manuscripts, notes, scrapbooks, clippings, receipts, music scores, and a collection of autographs that reflect Smith's theater career and his interest in book and manuscript collecting primarily from 1890 to 1930. Smith collaborated on operas and operettas with Reginald DeKoven, Victor Herbert, Irving Berlin, Ivan Caryl, Jerome Kern, and John Philip Sousa, among others. His correspondence with his collaborators, actors, actresses, and publishers centers around his theater projects and book and manuscript collecting. Smith's own correspondence is interfiled with autograph letters he collected by well-known writers and actors such as Joanna Baillie, Dion Boucicault, George Coleman, Robert William Elliston, David Garrick, Charles John Kean, and Mitchell Kennerley. Writings by Smith include over fifty scenarios, synopses, and musical plays, as well as fictional pieces, articles about collecting books and manuscripts, and notes and drafts for A Sentimental Library (1914), Smith's catalog of his own library. Scrapbooks contain clippings and bibliographic information about a number of authors, including Lord Byron, Dickens, Shakespeare, and Thackeray.

Baillie, Joanna, 1762-1851. Letter, 1817.
Title:
Letter, 1817.
Four-page holograph letter to Sir George Beaumont, Wordsworth's first important patron. Baillie refers to a revised manuscript version of De Montfort, evidently loaned to Beaumont, making light of the loss. She also comments wryly on the Duke of Wellington's appearance after the final curtain at a performance of one of her plays, taking his bows to thunderous applause "with a very bad grace."

Kemble, Fanny, 1809-1893,. Autograph letters signed from Fanny Kemble to various recipients [manuscript], 1831-1890.
Title:
Autograph letters signed from Fanny Kemble to various recipients [manuscript], 1831-1890.
Correspondents: Lady [Anne] Byron, F[rances Power] Cobbe, William [Bodham] Donne, Henry [William] Greville, Mary Charlotte Lloyd and Harriet St. Leger. Includes 167 letters, many letters incomplete, and 9 leaves from her journals. Many of the letters describe her experiences in America and her views on slavery and on the Civil War. Letters written from London, Ireland, Switzerland, Italy and the United States. A letter to Donne (307) tells of John Brown's Raid and castigates him as a "fanatic maniac." Some letters to Greville discuss New England's reactions to the possibility of England's entering the war. Several letters touch on Shakespeare. Othello is a sermon against inordinate affections. She did like [Charles] Kean's Othello. She thinks she would not like Fechter's; his Iago must be like her father's (347, 247, 249, 245). Sarah Bernhardt's portrayal of Lady Macbeth recalled Mrs. Siddons' notion of her as a small delicate fair blue-eyed woman (187). The letters refer constantly to her family and friends and to contemporary artists, actors, writers, preachers and politicians, among them Joanne Baillie (223), Ann Bradshaw (247), Emily Brontë (353), John Gibson, William Godwin (387), Nathaniel Hawthorne (381), Harriet Hosmer, Henry James, Charles Kingsley (387-389), Frederic Leighton, Longfellow (413), Macaulay, F. D. Maurice (393), Mendelssohn, Theodore Parker, Adelaide Procter (415) and Shelley (363). Also, a letter to Fanny Kemble from Frances P. Cobbe, July 8, [1875] (19b), a letter to Frances Cobbe from Fanny Kemble's maid, Eleanor Brianzoni, January 19, 1898, telling her of Fanny Kemble's death (457), a poem on Venice by Fanny Kemble, ca. 1861 (453) and several photographs and illustrations. Poem listed in Folger index of first lines. The fragments of her journals, 1831-1832, ca. 1840 and ca. 1850, include an anecdote about Mrs. Siddons and Richard Sheridan (435), musings on Lawrence's drawings of the Kemble family (449), a description of her feelings on seeing an actress on her first night (441) and a discussion of The tempest and A midsummer night's dream (439).
