John Banister Tabb
American priest and poet.
John B. Taub was is best known as a poet. He served in the Confederate army during the Civil War and became a POW. He was ordained a Catholic priest in 1884 and later taught English at St. Charles College in Maryland.
Virginia poet and Roman Catholic priest.
John Bannister Tabb was born 22 March 1845 on his father's plantation, "The Forest," in Amelia County, Virginia. His parents were John Yelverton and Marianne Bertrand Archer Tabb. A Confederate blockade runner during the Civil War, Tabb's ship, the "Siren," was captured 4 June 1864, and he was imprisoned at Pt. Lookout, Maryland. There he met and befriended the Georgian poet Sidney Lanier. They remained close friends until Lanier's death in 1881. Through their friendship, Tabb began to write poetry. After the war, Tabb studied theology, expecting to become an Episcopalian priest. However, he became interested in Catholicism and converted in September 1872. He subsequently entered St. Charles College, Ellicott City, Maryland, from which he graduated in 1875. Tabb enrolled in St. Mary's Seminary in Baltimore in 1881 and was ordained as a priest on 20 December 1884, though he never held a parish. He returned to St. Charles College and taught English until blindness forced him to retire in 1907. He began to write poetry during the Civil War, but his first volume, Poems, was not published until 1882. His metaphysical little poems gained popularity after the publication of a second volume of the same name in 1894, and he published regularly thereafter. Poor eyesight had plagued Tabb since boyhood, and he was completely blind when he died in Ellicott City, Maryland on 9 November 1909. Tabb's major works include Poems (1882), An Octave to Mary (1893), Poems (1894), Lyrics (1897), Bone Rules: Or, Skeleton of English Grammar (1897), Child Verse (1899), Two Lyrics (1900), Later Lyrics (1902), The Rosary on Rhyme (1884), Quipps and Quiddits (1907) and Later Poems (1910).

Title:
List of books presented by Southern writers to the Poe Alcove, 1900 June 1.
The list, in James A. Harrison's hand, records the number of volumes presented by each of 34 authors. Eight authors have no number listed but Harrison indicates volumes are "promised." Harrison incorrectly tallies the number of volumes received as 130; the correct total is 120. The books were presented by Southern writers to the Poe Alcove of the University of Virginia Library through Prof. and Mrs. J.A. Harrison. The volumes were for the use of English students working in Southern studies. Authors who presented books were: Frances Courtenay Baylor Barnum, Alexander Brown, William Hand Browne, Madison Cawein, American novelist Winston Churchill, J.L.M. Curry, George Cary Eggleston, Alcée Fortier, Ellen Glasgow, Constance Cary Harrison, Mary Johnston, William Preston Johnston, E.S. Joynes, Grace King, Julia Magruder, John S. Mosby, Lizette Woodworth Reese, Kate M. Rowland, Frank Stockton, Ruth McEnery Stuart, Father John B. Tabb, C.H. Toy, Augusta Evans Wilson, John S. Wise, and Woodrow Wilson. Authors who promised volumes were: Kate Chopin, Susan Pendleton Lee, F.V.N. Painter, the heirs of Margaret J. Preston, Hannis Taylor, Jeannette Walworth, and Katharine P. Woods. Search the phrase "Poe Alcove" in VIRGO for a list of the volumes identified as of May, 2007.

John Lane Company. Records of the John Lane Company, 1856-1933 (bulk, 1894-1930).
Title:
Records of the John Lane Company, 1856-1933 (bulk, 1894-1930).
The records of the John Lane Company comprise correspondence, readers' reports, manuscripts and proof copies, financial records, documents, and autobiographical materials. Series I of the John Lane Company Records comprises the correspondence and other records reflecting the activities of this firm, its officers and authors from 1856 to 1933, with the majority dating from 1894 to 1930. The correspondence is largely business-related, although the personal correspondence of John Lane is intermixed. Correspondents include Francis P. Barnard, Horace Bleackley, John Buchan, Walter Crane, Arthur Dasent, Richard and Edward Garnett, Kenneth Grahame, Constance Hill, Stephen Leacock, Vernon Lee, Richard Le Gallienne, William J. Locke, Alice and Wilfrid Meynell, Stephen Phillips, Margaret W. Roberts, Clement K. Shorter, Edward P. Stebbing, A. Francis Steuart, Frank Swettenham, Silvanus P. Thompson, Katrina Trask, William Watson, Theodore Watts-Dunton, and M. P. Willcocks. In addition to the large body of incoming correspondence, there is in the series a quantity of intramural correspondence by members of the firm covering the years 1898 to 1920. A small group of financial records and miscellaneous materials complete the series. The smaller Series II "Creative Work" embraces in the main a large number of readers' reports prepared for the firm between 1894 and 1930. There are no reports for the years 1909 to 1914 nor for 1917 to 1920, but otherwise the coverage appears comprehensive. Also present in this subseries is a small number of manuscripts by Lascelles Abercrombie, William Watson and others. Series III contains a small amount of material relating to John Lane the man. A short autobiographical sketch and notes which appear to be the beginning of a projected history of British art in India are contained in the series, along with fragments relating to Lane. As noted above, a significant amount of his personal correspondence is scattered through Series I.

Title:
Papers, 1783-1969.
Family and business correspondence and invention papers of a family of Ireland, Pennsylvania, Baltimore, Md., and Washington, D.C., which engaged in promoting inventions. Letter, 1877, Aug. 25, Chadd's Ford, Pennsylvania, to Tabb.
Happy to discover that Tabb is alive and writing poetry. Suggests some changes in his poem, "An Allegory". With this is filed a fragment of TL. written by Wm. McDevitt, editor of Biblio-Ana. Also included is an issue of the catalogue (Biblio-Ana, Vol.III.5, June, 1931) describing the sale of this letter to Brown University.
