Personal and family correspondence, speeches and writings including the unpublished manuscript of Simkhovitch's last book, papers relating to the New York Housing Authority, 1934-1948, Greenwich House, and some of her other professional affiliations, clippings, and photos document scattered portions of Simkhovitch's career and personal life. The Greenwich House papers consist of printed materials, 1921-1954, and correspondence pertaining to its 40th anniversary (1940) and Simkhovitch's retirement (1946). Her teaching and memberships on state boards are not documented. A major part of the collection is the correspondence of Simkhovitch's parents, Laura Davis Holmes Kingsbury, a teacher in Bridgewater, Mass., and Isaac Franklin Kingsbury, a Civil War soldier and government employee. These letters, 1850s-1920s, depict the education, courtship, family relationships, and attitudes toward the Civil War of a middle class New England family.

In 1902, Mary Kingsbury Simkhovitch and others founded Greenwich House, a social settlement house in the Greenwich Village section of New York City. It was incorporated that year as the Cooperative Social Settlement Society of the City of New York. Greenwich House established social service and cultural programs for the largely immigrant population of Greenwich Village. The Greenwich House Photographs Collection contains a unique group of images pertaining to social welfare and the settlement movement over a period of more than seventy years. The images are strongest in documenting the programs of Greenwich House (particularly those involving children and fine and applied arts instruction, such as its Pottery School and Music School, and its nursery school and kindergarten programs, and summer camps), as well as its administrative and institutional activities. The Collection also documents many aspects of the lives of immigrants and working people in New York City: Greenwich House social events, for example, detail the complex interactions between different ethnic groups, as well as the dress and demeanor of working-class children in New York City. In addition, street vistas document the architectural history of New York City and offer information on community life in Greenwich Village.

Greenwich House Records Bulk, 1896-1946 1896-1990, (Bulk 1896-1946)
In 1902, Mary Kingsbury Simkhovitch and others founded Greenwich House, a social settlement house in the Greenwich Village section of New York City. It was incorporated that year as the Cooperative Social Settlement Society of the City of New York. Greenwich House established social service and cultural programs for the largely Italian population of Greenwich Village. Greenwich House continues to offer an array of cultural, educational and social service programs. The records contain minutes, reports, correspondence, publicity material, program files, financial documents, publications, scrapbooks and 36,000 index cards detailing the activities of Greenwich House. Extensive correspondence of Mary Simkhovitch covers, in addition to House activities, such topics as political reform and public housing, as well as her unsuccessful 1937 campaign for the New York City Council. NOTE: Series I through VI-A have been microfilmed, and researchers must use the microfilm copy (R-7088). NOTE: This collection is housed offsite and advance notice is required for use.
