Box & Austin. Ledgers, 1746-1774.
Title:
Ledgers, 1746-1774.
Consists of two volumes kepts from 1746 to 1747 and from 1757 to 1774. The first ledger records the business activities of Box and Austin for 1746 and 1747, documenting a thriving maritime trade in the Port of Boston during its period of greatest growth. There are numerous entries for cordage, cable, spun yarn, shrouds, hand lines, deep sea line, rope, twine, rat and cod line, etc. In addition, Box and Austin supplied many ships, including coasting and fishing vessels, with rope from their yard as well as a range of other items from foodstuffs to building materials. They also had financial interests in many shipping ventures from Canada to the South American colonies. Sometimes, they served as bankers, accepting exchanges of accounts for payment. The volume contains the names of 12 sailing ships with cargos, 32 ship captains, and identifies a number of Boston craftsmen and tradesmen of the period. The second volume's entries are less detailed. They primarily list financial transactions between the firm and other merchants or the firm and its workers. Occassionally notes about settlement or adjustments to the accounts appear. A few products are mentioned, including handkerchiefs and a variety of types of wood. References to rent paid for dwelling houses are also featured.

Title:
Records of Harvard lotteries, 1772-1814
The records of the Harvard lotteries are comprised of materials created in the process of administering the Harvard College lotteries sanctioned by Massachusetts General Court to raise money for dormitory-building projects. The collection consists of five series containing lottery tickets, newspaper and broadside lottery announcements, accounting records, and administrative lists used to manage the lottery drawings. Most of the documents were created by the managers of the lottery in organizing, publicizing, and drawing the lotteries, and provide a resource for studying the operations of state-sanctioned lotteries in late 18th and early 19th century Massachusetts.

Austin, Benjamin W. Papers, 1798-1895.
Title:
Papers, 1798-1895.
This is the autograph and signed letter collection of Benjamin W. Austin. Many of the letters and autographs were obtained through Mr. Austin's written request, but older items appear to have come from the autograph collection of Henry Sheldon of Salisbury, Vermont. Although many items are older, most of Mr. Austin's active collecting was done in the 1880s and 1890s. The group includes items from Congressmen, Civil War heroes, literary figures, and educators. Of special note in the collection is a 1798 message from William Henry Harrison at Fort Washington. Many of the items are accompanied by biographical clippings and several are attached to photographs. Of particular interest are the vintage photographs of Commander Gilbert C. Wittse, naval engineer William H. Shock, and statesman and educator J.L.M. Curry.

United States Sanitary Commission records. Army and Navy Claim Agency archives 1861-1870
The United States Sanitary Commission established the Army and Navy Claim Agency (ANCA) in Washington, D.C. on April 1, 1864 to serve as the USSC’s central office to assist Union soldiers, sailors, and their families in prosecuting claims on the federal government for pensions, back pay, bounty, commutation of rations, prize money, and other benefits, without cost. The Army and Navy Claim Agency Archives comprise the records of the Army and Navy Claim Agency; the records of the Pension Agency, its predecessor organization; the registers and cash books of its subsidiary local agencies; and the records of two quasi-independent USSC claim agencies whose origins predate the establishment of the Army and Navy Claim Agency: the Protective War Claim Association of the State of New York, located in New York City, and the Protective War Claim and Pension Agency, located in Philadelphia.
