Correspondence of U.S. Treasurer Michael Hillegas and other Treasury Dept. officials with commissioners of the Continental Loan Office for Massachusetts in Boston (later known as the Massachusetts Loan Office of the U.S. Bureau of the Public Debt). The first commissioner was Nathaniel Appleton, who served until his death in 1798. Later commissioners represented in the collection are Thomas Perkins and Benjamin Austin. Also included is a letter from George Fowler Hastings, commander of the British steam frigate Cyclops, to Andrew H. Foote, of the U.S. sloop Perry, stationed off the coast of Africa (1850).

Michael Hillegas (1729-1804) was a merchant, sugar refiner, and iron magnate who used his wealth to assist the American revolutionary cause. He was involved in the young government's affairs as a member of the Provincial Assembly of Pennsylvania, treasurer of the Philadelphia Committee of Safety, and the first treasurer of the new United States of America.
