George Platt Lynes is best known as a portrait, fashion, and nude photographer. He spent several years living with and traveling with Glenway Wescott and Monroe Wheeler.
George Platt Lynes, American photographer.
American photographer best known for his fashion photographs, celebrity and society portraits, male nudes, and images of the New York City Ballet in the 1930s and 1940s.
Lynes worked in New York as a fashion photographer for Vogue and Harper's Bazaar and took photographs for Lincoln Kirstein and George Balanchine of the dancers and productions of the American Ballet. He also staged and photographed a series of male nudes.
George Platt Lynes (1907-1955) was a photographer from New York, N.Y.
Best known for his portraits of Hollywood stars, ballet dancers, writers, and male nudes.
George Platt Lynes was born on April 15, 1907 to Joseph Russell and Adelaide Sparkman Lynes in East Orange, New Jersey. He attended the Berkshire School, where Lincoln Kirstein was among his classmates. Considered inadequately prepared for college, George was sent to Paris, in the care of family cousins, Kate and Walter Hardy, with the goal of improving his basic prepatory subjects. In the heady milieu of literary Paris, he made the acquaintance of Réne Crevel and Gertrude Stein, with whom he began a decade-long correspondence. (see: YCAL MSS 76, Box 115, folder 2406 and YCAL MSS 77, Box 10, folder 136a).
Lynes eventually entered Yale University in the Fall of 1926, though he attended for only a single semester. A move to New York allowed Lynes to further his contact with the literary world he had been introduced to in Paris In January, 1927, he met the publisher Monroe Wheeler and his partner, the writer, Glenway Wescott. Over the next fifteen years, Lynes' emotional life centered around Wheeler and Wescott, with whom he maintained a succession of households in France and the United States. His search for a metier saw him explore writing and bookselling before he eventually found his aesthetic through the facility of the camera. His first informal portraits were done in the late 1920s, but soon he found himself an official society photographer, contributing to significant museum shows, magazines, and having his own one-man exhibitions. He became well-known for his fashion photography and eventually was made the head of Vogue magazine's West Coast studio in Los Angeles in 1946, where he moved following several years of emotional upheaval in his personal life, which included his break from Wescott and Wheeler.
Lynes returned to New York in 1948, but found he was no longer in demand for his commercial fashion work. Instead, he focused on his private interests, male nudes, and documenting productions of the New York City Ballet. His change of fortune, which included a bankruptcy filing in the early 1950s, ended with a diagnosis of lung cancer. He died in New York City on December 6, 1955.

Jared French papers, 1921-1989
Title:
Jared French papers 1921-1989
Collection contains correspondence, photographs, and other materials documenting the life and career of painter Jared French and a circle of friends and collaborators. Correspondence with individuals and cultural institutions, chiefly museums and galleries, document French's personal and professional affairs, with significant representation from members of the literary and artistic and gay male communities in New York during the middle decades of the twentieth century. In addition to large groups of letters from his wife Margaret (Hoening) French and painter Paul Cadmus, correspondents include Jack Dunphy, E. M. Forster, Edward Hopper, Lincoln Kirstein, George Platt Lynes, Bernard Perlin, George Tooker, Carl Van Vechten, Glenway Wescott, Monroe Wheeler, and Donald Windham. Photographs in the collection document French's personal relationships, interests in classical statuary and architecture, and artistic collaborations. Travel photographs depict statuary, architecture, and public scenes and events, with groups, travel companions, and friends. Some photographs appear to have been taken during the early 1950s in Europe, mostly in Italy (Florence). Others, depicting scenes in Europe, Vermont, New York City, and Coney Island, date from the 1920s through 1940s. People present include Jared and Margaret French, Paul Cadmus, E. M. Forster, Lincoln Kirstein, Osbert Sitwell, and others. Photographs from the "PaJaMa" collective formed by French with his wife and Cadmus, many of which were taken during the 1930s and 1940s on Fire Island, Provincetown, and Nantucket beaches, include George Tooker, Lincoln Kirstein, Truman Capote, George Platt Lynes, Donald Windham, Jack Dunphy, and Monroe Wheeler.

Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas papers, 1837-1961
Title:
Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas papers 1837-1961
The Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas Papers contain manuscripts of writings, letters, clippings, photographs, artworks, and personal papers relating to the life and work of Gertrude Stein and her companion, Alice B. Toklas, and to Gertrude's brother, Leo Stein, an artist and writer. As well as holding the bulk of Stein's literary output (often described as "experimental" or "cubist" writing), the materials document Stein and Toklas' involvement with the literary and art scene in Paris during the first half of the 20th century. Series I, Writings, contains holograph and typescript drafts of the majority of Gertrude Stein's writings, including "The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas," "The Making of Americans" (complete with a quantity of notes, or "studies"), "Tender Buttons" and a group of unpublished fragments and carnets, notebooks kept by Stein with preliminary drafts of writings. Series II, Correspondence of Gertrude Stein, contains letters sent from a wide variety of Stein's friends: artists such as Georges Bracque, Jean Cocteau, and Pablo Picasso; writers such as Sherwood Anderson, Ernest Hemingway, and Thornton Wilder; and acquaintances through many years such as Mildred Aldrich, Etta and Claribel Cone, Robert Haas, Mabel Dodge Luhan,Sir Francis Rose, Virgil Thomson, and Carl Van Vechten. Series III, Third Party Letters and Series IV, Alice B. Toklas Correspondence, contain letters from many of the same people, the latter group containing Alice Toklas's correspondence following Gertrude Stein's death. Series V, Personal Papers, and Series VI, Clippings, gather together various personal affects of Stein and Toklas as well as documentation of Stein's life as reported during her lifetime. Series VII, Photographs, show Stein from early childhood through 1946, the year she died. Prints showing Alice Toklas, various friends, artworks, and locales are included in this series, as are several volumes of prints made by Carl Van Vechten. Series VIII and IX contain numerous artworks and objects given by Stein and Toklas. Included here are a painting by Pablo Picasso and a sketch by Henri Matisse.

Castellón, Federico. Correspondence with Carl Zigrosser, 1933-1971, n.d.
Title:
Correspondence with Carl Zigrosser, 1933-1971, n.d.
The earliest letters from Castellón cover his travels in Europe and his response to the countries and art there, the progress of his work and it's reception. Letters from Madrid relate anecdotes about Salvador Dalí and the delights of the museums there. Paris news includes Castellón's inclusion in a 1935 exhibit of Spanish artists working in Paris and his sighting Alice B. Toklas and Gertrude Stein in the galleries. Upon Castellón's return to New York, his lengthy letters detail the progress of his work and the financial demands of his family, sharing a studio with Henry Mangravite, his surrealist style's reception, his many plans to escape to "Utopia," money trouble and a thank you note to Zigrosser for a loan that enables Castellón to get away to New Orleans. Zigrosser arranged for Catellón to spend the summer of 1939 at Yaddo, a colony Castellón would return to. His letters from Yaddo recount the suicide of Richard Berman (Arnold Höllriegel), a refugee reporter from Vienna. A longer letter from Yaddo describes in detail his life there, the food, the architecture, Marc Blitzstein's political turmoil, Elizabeth Ames and her affair with Leonard Ehrlich, his dislike of Rudolf von Ripper, and the others at Yaddo: Nathan Asch, Martin Gumpert, John Cheever, David Diamond, Herman Broch, Jean Starr Untermeyer, Maureen Whipple and Newton Arvin. The letters are full of details and gossip. Also mentioned is his search for commercial work and his continuing money trouble. Some letters are addressed to Laura Canade, another employee at Weyhe Gallery and Zigrosser's future wife. In 1940, Castellón writes about serigraphy, commercial work at PM magazine, his fiancée Hilda Field and the new residents of Yaddo: Bruce M itchell, Miriam Cohen, Agnes Tait, Marion Greenwood, George Platt Lynes, Monroe Wheeler, and Katherine Anne Porter. After Zigrosser left Weyhe Gallery for the Philadelphia Museum of Art, he continued to support Castllón's career, supporting his application for a Guggenheim Fellowship. Castellón's letters describe meeting Alfred Barr and Una E. Johnson, his travels in the American southwest on his Fellowship, his concerns about being drafted and his 1942 stay at Katherine Anne Porter's farm. In 1943, Castellón was drafted, and his few, very emotional letters from this time describe his depression and alienation from art, his camouflage assignment under scenic designer Jo Mielziner, and eventual posting to India and China. From the war on, the correspondence is less frequent, but the letters are still jammed with details, descriptions and plans. Comments about the new painting, critics and exhibitions have a touch of bitterness to them. Castellón describes the new painting as empty, insincere, falsely intellectual rule-bound. His surrealist, representational style is out of favor. He writes about the changes at Weyhe Gallery and his growing discontent with Erhard Weyhe. He continues to write about plans for print portfolios and travelling, his Guggenheim Fellowship to Rome, and his friendship with John Taylor Arms and Adolf Dehn, two artists from an earlier generation. There is a gap in the correspondence from 1952 to 1963. A very long letter from Castellón details financial transactions, various career alternatives, printmaking ventures and the difficulties of teaching. He describes several projects with Atelier Desjobert in Paris and Abe Lublin in New York (Lublin is also doing mountains of work with Jack Levine), and his own on-going relationship with Associated American Artists and Sylvan Cole. Late letters describe his own print collecting in Europe and his frustration at the Philadelphia Museum of Art's declining to accept a complete set of his prints because they would not take his printing plates as well. The last letters describe Castellón's approaching departure to take up residence in Paris. Included in the printed matter are two issues of a publication of James Monroe High School in New York, exhibition announcements, clippings, reproductions of Castellón's work, and some exhibition catalogs.

George Platt Lynes Collection, 1926-1997, (bulk 1930s-1940s).
The George Platt Lynes Collection consists of photographs, manuscript materials, and a piece of needlepoint collected by Dora Maxwell Harrison, Lynes' assistant from 1936 to 1944. The works by George Platt Lynes are comprised of 121 gelatin silver prints (98 loose, 23 in a disbound album) and one needlepoint. The loose prints, a combination of exhibition and work prints, provide a good representation of most genres of Lynes' work: portrait, fashion, nude, and theatrical photography. The album documents the evolution of a 1940 painting by Paul Cadmus titled Conservation Piece (1940). The second series, Photographs of Lynes & Exhibitions, consists of 12 loose gelatin silver prints. Included are portraits by Cecil Beaton, George Hoyningen-Huene, and Janet Taylor, and photographs taken at the 1941 exhibition "Two Hundred Portraits by George Platt Lynes" at the Pierre Matisse Gallery in New York City. The third series, Manuscript Materials, is comprised of tear sheets, clippings, Lynes exhibition announcements and Christmas cards. Nearly all the tear sheets and clippings are related to Lynes or to Diana Vreeland.

Title:
Lillian Gish letters and ephemera 1936-1991
The collection documents both the long-time correspondence between James Belden and Lillian Gish and his admiration for her which is illustrated in his documentation of her career. The correspondence spans the years 1936 to 1991 and contains many of Gish's opinions and insights into the world of the theater and her tastes in literature. The clippings and articles document primarily her earlier career, becoming sketchy during Ms. Gish's middle age.
