Unpublished autobiography (375 p.) which details La Rue's life and career as a stage actress and musical performer through 1927. She begins with her childhood in Missouri and Kansas, and describes early appearances and travels with the circus, vaudeville acts, and burlesque shows. Throughout the manuscript, she refers to encounters with notable show business personalities, such as Julia Marlowe, Florenz Ziegfeld, Will Rogers, Charlie Chaplin, Al Jolson, Enrico Caruso, Rudolph Valentino, Harry Houdini, Lillian Russell, George Gershwin, and many others. Title:
Llewellyn Miller caricatures ca. 1926-1930 and undated
Author, drama critic, and editor, Llewellyn Miller, was born ca. 1899. She began her career in Los Angeles as a newspaper caricaturist. Miller later became a drama and film editor for the Los Angeles record, as well as working as a drama critic. She also reviewed books for several Los Angeles newspapers, including the Los Angeles examiner and went on to write several books herself: Reducing cookbook and diet guide (Crowell,1952); The encyclopedia of etiquette (Crown,1957); and The joy of Christmas (Bobbs-Merrill, 1960). In the 1930s, Miller moved to New York and edited fan magazines, as well as writing pieces for various magazines. She was a vice-president of the Society of Magazine Writers and an early officer of the American Society of Journalists and Authors. Miller died of cancer at her home in New York on Sept. 1, 1971 at the age of 72. The American Society of Journalists and Authors created a fund in Miller's name (now the Writers Emergency Assistance Fund) to help writers in financial difficulty due to illness. Approximately 63 original caricatures (mostly ink on card stock) of performers in the Los Angeles theater and also several film stars, by Llewellyn Miller, possibly for the Los Angeles record in the late 1920s. Performers depicted include Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin, Dolores Costello, Pauline Frederick, and Edward Everett Horton.

Papers, 1913-1978.
Correspondence, manuscripts, documents, notes, photographs, and printed material of Winter. The papers cover primarily the years after 1952 when she and Stewart settled in England to avoid involvement in the House Un-American Activities Committee investigations. Winter traveled widely in Russia, visited China in 1958, and spent nine months in Ghana in 1965. Her journeys are well documented in this collection. Among the manuscripts are drafts for many of her periodical articles, typescripts of her autobiography AND NOT TO YIELD, and articles written about her travels. Also, files on art, the labor movement in California, Robinson Jeffers, the McCarthy era, Lincoln Steffens, and Vietnam. There are numerous photographs taken on her trips abroad, including her work with the Friends of Austria, 1920, of many theatrical productions, and of her family and home. Because of her eclectic interests she was acquainted with many prominent individuals in politics, literature, theatre, and the arts. Among the major correspondents are Edward Albee, Charles and Oona Chaplin, W.E.B. Du Bois, Katharine Hepburn, Carey McWilliams, Kwame Nkrumah, Sean O'Casey, and Muriel Rukeyser.

Swanson, Gloria. Papers. Series II. Career, ca. 1914-1983.
Title:
Papers. Series II. Career, ca. 1914-1983.
Nearly all of Miss Swanson's sixty-six motion pictures, 1914-1975, are represented by film stills and other materials. This collection does include some of Swanson's film holdings, though most were acquired by George Eastman House in 1967. Coverage is sparsest for her beginnings at Essanay Studios, Sennett/Keystone Studios, and Triangle Company. The Famous Players-Lasky Corp./Paramount Pictures period, 1919-1926, is more comprehensively documented with groups of stills and scrapbooks, clippings, correspondence, contracts, and publicity items. The substantial correspondence, financial, legal, and production records of the United Artists years, 1925-1933, occupy forty boxes, yet only meagre files for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios, Fox Films, and Columbia Pictures Corp. represent Swanson's career for the remainder of the 1930s. Records of the scattered later films with RKO Radio Pictures, Paramount Pictures Corp., Warner Brothers, Titanus-Lux Films, and Universal City Studios, Inc. complete this subseries. Of these, the fullest records exist for Swanson's famous appearance in Paramount's Sunset Boulevard in 1950. Also represented is Swanson's involvement in other entertainment branches, which extended to radio (1927-1981, including The Gloria Swanson Show, 1951), television (1944-1981, including The Gloria Swanson Hour broadcast during the "stone age" of television in 1948), and theatre (1937-1977, including three Broadway productions, Twentieth Century, Nina, and Butterflies Are Free). Correspondents in this series include Steve Allen, Eve Arden, Richard Banks, Vilma Banky, Beverly Bayne, Pierre A. Bedard, Francesca Bertini, Virginia Bowker, Walter Byron, James Card (George Eastman House), Richard Chamberlain, Charlie Chaplin, Ruth Chatterton, Dick Clark, Lenore J. Coffee, George Cukor, André Daven, Cecil B. DeMille, E. B. Kennedy, Alan Jay Lerner, Josephine Lovett, Clare Boothe Luce, Joseph L. Manuel Frères, Donald Biddle Keyes, Jack Mitchell, Nickolas Muray, Alexander Phillips, Melbourne Spurr, Edward Steichen), and lyricists and composers (most notably Edmund Goulding, Dickson Hughes, Elsie Janis, Franz Lehar, Dorothy Parker, Richard Stapley, and Vincent Youmans) is included in this collection. Also included in this series are career-related materials from actors' groups, film and television organizations, libraries, museums, and universities. The largest group of files included here center around the later records of Queen Kelly, 1956-1985, documenting ownership, copyright, domestic and foreign showings, television rights, use in documentary films, etc. Also included are files containing repository agreements and correspondence concerning Miss Swanson's personal film collection at the Museum of Modern Art (ca. 1944-1967) and George Eastman House (1967-1982).

Responding to his letter (MA 6426.36), insisting that the wine was a gift, and noting that the Steinbecks and "Charley" [Charlie Chaplin] went to the Manson Winery for the vintage. Discussing their collaborative work, noting that "of course" Steinbeck wants to work on "Ecce Homo!," and "for gods sake" Lorentz should "forget about [producing] In Dubious Battle." Mentioning that Steinbeck will probably finish the draft [of "The Grapes of Wrath"] by the beginning of November, and that he gets "pretty low about this book sometimes." Hoping that "this god damn book is some good. It's been hard enough work."

Title:
George DeMott papers circa 1890-1954
The George DeMott papers consist of correspondence, some diaries/appointment books, contracts, photographs, and scrapbooks. This material is almost all business related, and there are no significant personal papers. The papers are divided into two distinct parts, with some overlap: items such as contracts and correspondence that relate to the career of Mr. DeMott, and items such as posters, brochures, etc., that he collected, and placed into scrapbooks. The section of the DeMott papers devoted to Booking Agencies and Agents (Series IV) is divided into 18 sub-series, and contains a great deal of correspondence detailing the difficulties George DeMott and his wife Fanny faced booking their act into schools. The scrapbooks comprise the bulk of the collection and contain a variety of items, including clippings, posters, brochures, correspondence, handbills, fliers, photographs, and programs. The oversized material includes a poster and a road map.

Guide to the Daily Worker and Daily World Photographs Collection, 1920-2001
Title:
Guide to the Daily Worker and Daily World Photographs Collection, 1920-2001
The official organ of the Communist Party, USA, the Daily Worker's editorial positions reflected the policies of the Communist Party. At the same time the paper also attempted to speak to the broad left-wing community in the United States that included labor, civil rights, and peace activists, with stories covering a wide range of events, organizations and individuals in the United States and around the world. As a daily newspaper, it covered the major stories of the twentieth century. However, the paper always placed an emphasis on radical social movements, social and economic conditions particularly in working class and minority communities, poverty, labor struggles, racial discrimination, right wing extremism with an emphasis on fascist and Nazi movements, and of course the Soviet Union and the world-wide Communist movement. The paper has had a succession of names and has been published in varying frequences between daily to weekly over the course of its existence. In 2010 it ceased print publication and became an electronic, online-only, weekly publication titled the People's World. The bulk of the collection consists of printed photographic images produced through a variety of processes, collected by the photography editors of the Daily Worker and its successor newspapers as a means of maintaining an organized collection of images for use in publication. Images of many important people, groups and events associated with the CPUSA and the American Left are present in the collection, as well as images of a wide variety of people, subjects and events not explicitly linked with the CPUSA or Left politics.
