Blakeston, Oswell, 1907-1985. Papers, 1927-1985.
Title:
Papers, 1927-1985.
The papers of Oswell Blakeston comprise materials in various formats that document his writing career, including his work in films. Blakeston wrote novels and poetry as well as non-fiction, such as cookbooks, travel books, and books on film production. Among Blakeston's published work, there are materials for APPOINTMENT WITH SEVEN, JEREMY & OTHERS, WHAT THE DINO-SAUR, COOKING WITH NUTS, ZOO KEEPS WHO?, WORKING CATS, WORKING FOR THE FILMS, PORTUGUESE PANORAMA, SUN AT MIDNIGHT, DANGER IN PROVENCE, FINGERS, PRIESTS, PETERS AND PUSSENS, and THE QUEEN'S MATE. Much of his unpublished work is also represented, including APPOINTMENT WITH X, FIRST STEPS IN QUICKSAND, AT THE THIRD STROKE, THE HORRID LIFE OF MARY CASTLE, HOW SOON DOTH MAN DECAY, MOONLIGHT AT THE CROSS-ROADS, THE MYSTERY OF THE MISSING TREASURE, and NAKED IN THE AIR. The collection also contains a significant number of essays, lectures, and reviews. Some of the most significant material is located in the Correspondence series. Letters from publishers, editors, collaborators, illustrators, and other colleagues as well as his readers document Blakeston's professional life in addition to providing observations on unusual vacation spots, the London art scene, and writers whom Blakeston had known. Especially significant is a large group of letters from the novelist Bryher touching on her creative struggles, her unrequited love for H. D., and her own enthusiasm for Blakeston's work. Other significant correspondents include Nancy Cunard, H. D., John Lennon, Kenneth Macpherson, Yoko Ono, Lotte Reininger, Perdita Schaffner, and Eric Walter White. Of interest in the history of gay publishing, there are letters from editors Dennis Cooper, Winston Leyland, and Ian Young, among others.

Anka, Paul. Musicians Collection, 1727-1981, (bulk 1900-1940).
Title:
Musicians Collection, 1727-1981, (bulk 1900-1940).
Consists of ca. 4900 items which are primarily of a visual nature and portray approximately 1700 musicians and musical groups: classical composers, conductors, soloists, and ensembles; big bands and bandleaders; bandmasters; impresarios; vaudeville artists, minstrel show performers, and other variety acts; twentieth-century American musical theater composers; and post-1940 popular singers and musical groups, including country singers. Photographs comprise about 95% of the collection. Other formats present are engravings, lithographs, clippings, concert programs, brochures, booklets, sheet music, vocal and instrumental scores, drawings, paintings, postcards, correspondence, posters, and ephemera. The bulk of the collection consists of publicity photographs, ca. 1900-1940, of vaudeville and variety acts, popular singers, jazz musicians, and brass band-type ensembles. African-American and female musicians represent a substantial portion of the figures covered by these files, especially from the late nineteenth century and the early decades of the twentieth century. A large number of cabinet cards and cartes-de-visite date from this period. Most of the photographs are gelatin silver prints. Other formats include ca. 500 engravings and lithographs of famous composers and classical musicians, 1727-1887 (bulk ca. 1880-1860). Of these, Irish musicians are prominent. About a dozen drawings in charcoal, pencil, pen and ink, and watercolor are present, as well as an oil painting of Beethoven. The great majority of the concert programs in the collection are for classical musicians appearing in New York at Mendelssohn Hall, Aeolian Hall, Carnegie Hall, and Town Hall. Many of the programs for the latter date from late March 1941. Letters in the collection, 1780s-1977 (bulk 1820s-1860s) are chiefly written by classical composers. The manuscript and printed music includes works by several American musicians, including autograph lyrics and music for twenty-eight of Paul Anka's songs, probably from the early 1960s. Published music includes arrangements and piano and vocal scores for compositions by Victor Herbert and Pietro Mascagni. Composite portraits are located at the end of the alphabet, followed by Unidentified and Miscellaneous items. A very small number of items pertain to non-musical subjects (painters, actors, etc.).

Canemaker's own films include:'The 40's' (1974), 'Bottom's Dream' (1983), 'The Hunger Project' (1987), animation sequences for 'The World According To Garp'(1981), 'You Don't Have To Die' (1988) which received an Academy Award, Confessions of a Stand-Up (1993), and Bridgehampton (1998). Canemaker began collecting the material that comprises this collection in the early 1970's, and eventually obtained a wealth of material about the history, technique, and cultural significance of animated films. Items include animation resources such as: documentary material, drawings, posters, storyboards, recorded interviews and lectures, personal research materials for his articles and books, and periodicals.

Guide to the Daily Worker and Daily World Photographs Collection, 1920-2001
Title:
Guide to the Daily Worker and Daily World Photographs Collection, 1920-2001
The official organ of the Communist Party, USA, the Daily Worker's editorial positions reflected the policies of the Communist Party. At the same time the paper also attempted to speak to the broad left-wing community in the United States that included labor, civil rights, and peace activists, with stories covering a wide range of events, organizations and individuals in the United States and around the world. As a daily newspaper, it covered the major stories of the twentieth century. However, the paper always placed an emphasis on radical social movements, social and economic conditions particularly in working class and minority communities, poverty, labor struggles, racial discrimination, right wing extremism with an emphasis on fascist and Nazi movements, and of course the Soviet Union and the world-wide Communist movement. The paper has had a succession of names and has been published in varying frequences between daily to weekly over the course of its existence. In 2010 it ceased print publication and became an electronic, online-only, weekly publication titled the People's World. The bulk of the collection consists of printed photographic images produced through a variety of processes, collected by the photography editors of the Daily Worker and its successor newspapers as a means of maintaining an organized collection of images for use in publication. Images of many important people, groups and events associated with the CPUSA and the American Left are present in the collection, as well as images of a wide variety of people, subjects and events not explicitly linked with the CPUSA or Left politics.

Johnson, Gary,. Gary Johnson Collection, 1940-2003.
Title:
Gary Johnson Collection, 1940-2003.
The Gary Johnson Collection consists of six series: concert posters, 200 Motels Herb Cohen files, Zola Taylor, publications and press releases, the Beatles, flyers and handbills, and individual items related to Woody Guthrie, Nirvana, Elvis Presley, The Ramones, Elliot Smith, and Spinal Tap. The collection includes audio recordings, chord charts, clippings, financial and legal documents, 8mm film, flyers, handbills, magazines, manuscripts, posters, sheet music, and teletypes. The material spans 1940 to 2003, with bulk dates of 1965-1989. The collection provides extensive documentation on the promotion of regional rock and roll acts performing in the midwest and northwest of the United States from the mid-1960s to the early 1980s, as well as that of the punk and New Wave scene in Los Angeles in the 1980s. The production and release of the 1971 film 200 Motels is also well documented in the collection through Herb Cohen's files. There is also a nice selection of Beatles' 8mm films sold in the 1970s. Seen in a broader context, the collection provides insights to how regional acts were promoted and the venues they played, and serves as a reference to performers that played during that era. The collection also provides insights into the management side of the filmmaking process, the arrangement of live musical performance, the commercial viability of a band after they have disbanded, and reports of celebrity deaths by the press.
