Army officer.
John Bradstreet (1711-1774), a soldier who served with the British and colonial forces, 1735-1774, gained recognition for his extraordinary abilities with that class of irregulars known as "battoe-men." Governor Shirley, in 1756, put Bradstreet in command of all matters relating to transportation of supplies and provisions on the New York frontier. In December 1756 Bradstreet offered to assume part of the expense of an expedition against Fort Frontenac (Kingston, Ontario) with the proviso that he be reimbursed and promoted if the expedition were successful. Bradstreet captured the fort in August 1758, thus breaking the line of French communication between the St. Lawrence and the Ohio Rivers. For the remainder of the war, Bradstreet functioned as deputy quartermaster-general. In the suppression of Pontiac's rebellion, 1764, he commanded the northern of the two armies that penetrated into Indian territory.
British Army officer during the French and Indian War, King George's War, and Pontiac's Rebellion; b. in Annapolis Royal, N.S. His early military service consisted of garrison duty in Nova Scotia during which time he took advantage of his Acadian heritage and engaged in trade with the French at Louisbourg. In 1755, he was appointed as Gov. William Shirley's adjutant general and in 1756 led a relief column to Fort Oswego with supplies. Upon his return he was attacked by the French and Indians. He survived but his warnings to Gov. Shirley and Lord Loudon of the weak condition of Fort Oswego were lost in their power struggle. The French captured and burned Oswego later the same year. In 1758, after being appointed Lt. Colonel, he participated in the attack on Fort Carillon and led the advance guard following the death of Gen. George Howe. He commanded the British expedition of 3000 that captured Fort Frontenac, taking control of Lake Ontario from the French on Aug. 26, 1758. After the war he was appointed Colonel in 1764 and led a force of 1400 to reinforce Fort Detroit in response to the outbreak of Pontiac's Rebellion.
British general in America.
British and colonial army officer, and Newfoundland office holder.
John Bradstreet received an army commission in 1735 and served with distinction at Louisburg (1745), Oswego (1755), and Frontenac (1758). In the 1864 suppression of Pontiac's rebellion, Col. Bradstreet commanded the northern of two armies, moving his force to Detroit and reasserting British control over posts such as Fort Michilimackinac that had previously been taken by the Indians.

Orderly books collection, 1758-1813.
Title:
Orderly books collection, 1758-1813.
This collection of orderly books encompasses the French and Indian War, the U.S. Revolution, and the War of 1812 with the majority of books dating from the Revolutionary period. Of special importance are those kept during the Siege of Boston (1775) and for the final years of the Revolution in the Highlands region of New York. Unless the cover or fly leaf cite the name of the owner, regiment, or brigade, it is often difficult to identify the volume positively, and general orders, are, for lack of more precise identification, occasionally described as "Headquarters Orderly Book" or "Brigade Orderly Book."

Title:
Papers, 1754-1782.
This collection reflects Bradstreet's career as summarized above. There are three boxes of records of the bateau and transport service under the command of Bradstreet for the years 1756, 1758, 1759, 1760, 1761, and 1763. The account book of "Monies received and paid for the batteau [sic] service by Daniel De Normandie, under direction of Lt. Col. John Bradstreet" lists accounts and receipts from 4 May 1758 to 30 November 1758 (127 p.). There is one volume of notes for the expedition against Detroit, September 1764, which includes sketches of maps of the Great Lakes, names and locations of Indian tribes, notes on camping places, and tables of distances (27 p.). There are over 300 items of correspondence, returns, receipts for shipments from Bradstreet, and miscellaneous manuscripts. Principal correspondents are John Glen and Abraham Mortier. Some of the correspondence is with Governor William Shirley, Lord Jeffrey Amherst, and General Thomas Gage, much of it in the form of drafts of communications sent by Bradstreet. The correspondence, covering the period 1755 to 1773, reflects the problems of organizing the troops and maintaining the supplies. In March 1771, the Council of New York granted Bradstreet's claim of 20,00 acres of land near Albany. This grant was contested by the Hardenbergh Proprietors and the case was presented at the Court of Great Britain and decided in Bradstreet's favor. The manuscript records the argument of Bradstreet's counsel and includes the original presentation and revised draft.

Title:
Martha Bradstreet papers, 1772-1868.
Papers, 1774-1868, mainly consisting of correspondence and legal documents relating to Martha Bradsteet's attempts to regain title to land in Utica (N.Y.), which was originally part of the property of General John Bradstreet, the stepfather of Bradstreet's father, Samuel. Title to the land became confused by a poorly drafted deed of sale to Peter Schuyler in 1793, and Martha Bradstreet's claim to the land was further complicated by the terms of the will of her aunt, Elizabeth Livius. Because Bradstreet married Matthew Codd in 1799 without the approval of Charles Morgan, the executor of the will, her share of the property reverted to her brother, Samuel Bradstreet. When Morgan approved the marriage in 1801, she found much of the land had been sold, and her litigation, in a case which was finally decided against her in 1831, was an attempt to cancel the sales and regain possession of the land. Bradstreet spent a a good deal of time in England and Ireland, and conducted the litigation through lawyers in London, Edward Bell and C. Bedford. Her Irish cousins, Simon, Edmund, and John Bradstreet, are represented in the correspondence. John Bradstreet was particularly involved in her affairs. The correspondence contains some personal letters, but is mainly concerned with the case; the bulk of it dates from 1815. There are also wills, leases, powers of attorney, and other miscellaneous papers and bills.

Johnson, William, Sir, 1715-1774. Papers, 1733-1808.
Title:
Papers, 1733-1808.
This collection of Johnson's papers represents a significant number of Johnson's personal and business papers. The collection consists of several thousand individual documents ranging from bills and receipts to correspondence to household inventories. The collection includes materials seized by the State during the American Revolution and other materials acquired subsequently to supplement the collection. Included in this collection are correspondence, bills, accounts, records of public proceedings, official and military reports regarding Johnson as a land developer, records relating to Johnson's activities as a fur trader and his activities as Superintendent of Indian Affairs. Also included are papers relating to trade with the Indians; papers relating to Johnson's activities during the French and Indian War, particularly the Battle of Lake George in 1755; the construction of Johnson's homes, Fort Johnson and Johnson Hall; the erection of public buildings for use by the county seat in Johnstown, N.Y. and other papers reflecting Johnson's role as a prominent figure on the colonial frontier. The collection also contains materials relating to Johnson's activities as a land agent for his uncle Sir Peter Warren. Johnson acted as Warren's agent shortly after his immigration to America and managed Warren's Mohawk Valley lands. The collection was badly damaged in the 1911 New York State Capitol fire. Those documents that survived were published as Johnson Papers (see publications note). A published calendar of the collection was issued prior to the fire and the absence of particular documents is easy to ascertain (see publications note). The State Library holds other papers of Johnson and his family which are cataloged separately.

Martha Bradstreet papers, circa 1750-1877, 1800-1840
Title:
Martha Bradstreet papers circa 1750-1877 1800-1840
The papers consist chiefly of handwritten copies of maps, survey reports, and other legal documents related to litigation by Martha Bradstreet to gain title to land throughout the Mohawk River Valley in New York State. The land, including portions of Cosby's Manor and Utica, was originally the property of Major General John Bradstreet (1714-1774), the stepfather of her father, Samuel Bradstreet. The papers served as evidence for litigation by Martha Bradstreet against owners and tenants of the land. Survey reports and maps in the collection document landownership in the regions, as well as partitions and subdivisions made during the early nineteenth century within the Mohawk River Valley communities, especially in Utica, as well as Deerfield, Masonville, and Tompkins. The papers include a holograph manuscript of Bradstreet's (1827). It details thirty-five cases she brought in federal courts and the unfavorable rulings made by Justice Alfred Conkling (1789-1874) of United States District Court for the Northern District of New York. A small amount of correspondence includes letters and draft letters pertaining to her litigation and personal letters from her friend Clarissa "Clara" Bartlett Gregory Catlin (1807-1845).
