In 1764 Col. John Bradstreet led a force from Niagara on a mission to relieve Detroit and subdue the Delawares and Shawnees who had participated in Pontiac's uprising.

Contrary to his orders, Bradstreet concluded a peace treaty with the two tribes at Fort Presque Isle (Erie, Pa.). At Detroit, Sept. 5-7, 1764, Bradstreet also concluded a treaty with chiefs of the Ottawa, Ojibwa, Huron, and Potawatomi tribes. On Sept. 10, he assigned Col. John Campbell of the 17th Regiment of Foot to command the Detroit garrison.
