The Scott Paper Company was incorporated in Pennsylvania on December 21, 1905, as successor to the Scott Paper Company, Ltd., organized in October 1879. The company pioneered the manufacture and marketing of toilet paper and paper towels.
The company was founded in Philadelphia by the brothers Clarence and E. Irwin Scott as a general wholesale jobbing business in coarse paper products such as wrapping paper and paper bags. The company soon carved out a niche cutting and packaging toilet paper, which was sold by individual retailers under their own brand names.
E. Irwin Scott's only son, Arthur Hoyt Scott, joined the business in 1896 and began its transformation into a modern enterprise. After incorporation in 1905, the company began the mass production of toilet paper under a few brand names and introduced paper towels. The company began an extensive program of consumer advertising in 1906 and constructed a large paper mill and factory in Chester in 1910.
The company began a program of backward integration in 1927, when it purchased the Nova Scotia Wood Pulp & Paper Company, Ltd. In September 1936, it joined with the Mead Corporation to organize the Brunswick Pulp & Paper Company in Georgia. In 1940, it acquired two mills and timber lands in Washington and Oregon with the purchase of the Anacortes Pulp Company and the Coos Bay Pulp Corporation. It purchased the properties of the Marinette & Menominee Paper Company in Wisconsin and Michigan in 1941 and the Medway Hydro Electric Power Company in 1942.
Expansion continued after World War II, with the acquisition in 1945 of the Automatic Paper Machinery Company, makers of Cut-Rite wax paper. In 1951, Scott Paper purchased the Falls Paper & Power Company of Wisconsin and the Soundview Pulp Company of Washington. In 1954, it acquired the properties of the Detroit Sulphite Pulp & Paper Company of Detroit and its subsidiary, the Driftwood Lands & Timber Limited of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.
Also in 1954, Scott Paper acquired the Hollingsworth & Whitney Company, which had been founded in Boston in 1862 and incorporated in 1882. Hollingsworth & Whitney manufactured wrapping papers and bags at plants in Massachusetts, Maine, and Alabama, and through a Canadian subsidiary owned timber lands in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. In 1965, Scott acquired the Beveridge Paper Company group, including the Plastic Coating Corporation, which made coatings for paper and wire, and the Tecnifax Corporation, which made blueprint and copier papers. Scott Paper was merged into its longtime rival Kimberly-Clark Corporation on December 12, 1995.

Title:
Domestic advertisements collection, 1875-2001 and n.d. bulk 1920s-1990s
Collection consists of print advertisements created by U.S. offices of the J. Walter Thompson Company (JWT) that appear in a variety of formats--magazine, newspaper, color, black-and-white, proofs, tearsheets, negative transfers, clippings, along with a limited number of sketches for outdoor advertising installations. Some of the advertisements feature work from notable artists, such as Norman Rockwell, and photographers like Edward Steichen, Irving Penn, and Baron De Meyer. In addition to the actual advertisements, the files dating from the 1910s to 1950s often contain "insertion schedules" that provide the dates and names of the magazines or newspapers in which a given advertisement appeared. In general, proofs for JWT's long-time clients have been saved more systematically than those for accounts that JWT did not hold for a long time. The collection does not include advertisements which have been transferred to microfilm (see the JWT Microfilm Collection). Also, advertisements created for clients that JWT lost prior to the 1940s are less likely to have been saved, although some were microfilmed and are still available in that form. For some JWT clients there are no print advertisements at all in this collection. Among the most extensive files of print advertisements are those for the following JWT clients: Champion Spark Plug, Chesebrough-Ponds, Eastman Kodak (Instamatic, Pocket Instamatic, and Disc cameras, Kodak film), Ford Motor Company (consumer and dealer advertisements), R.T. French, Irving Trust Bank, J. Walter Thompson Company ("house advertisements"), Kraft Foods (including Kraft cheeses, Miracle Whip, Philadelphia Cream Cheese, and Velveeta), Lever Brothers (Lifebuoy, Lux, Close Up, Mrs. Butterworth), Pan American World Airways (passenger jet travel, cargo transportation), Radio Corporation of America (RCA) (RCA Victor recordings, consumer goods, National Broadcasting Company), Reader's Digest, Scott Paper, Seven-Up, Standard Brands (Chase & Sandborn, Fleischmann, Royal, Tenderleaf tea), and Warner-Lambert (primarily Listerine, including advertisements produced by the Lambert & Feasley agency).

Nan Findlow was an advertising executive and entrepreneur. She was Creative Director for major retail companies, including Bamberger's and Macy's department stores, and held executive positions with the Ross Roy and J. Walter Thompson Company advertising agencies before founding her own consulting agency, Nan Findlow Creative Services. The Nan Findlow Papers span the years 1930-1995, the bulk of which document the period 1959-1967, and include clippings, photographs, advertising scripts for television commercials, print advertisements, story boards, marketing reports, correspondence, corporate memoranda, trade literature, speeches, and company newsletters. The bulk of the materials represents Findlow's time as an executive at the J. Walter Thompson Company (JWT), where her client assignments included American Home Products (Boyle-Midway), Chesebrough-Pond's, Lever Brothers Company, McCall's, Prince Matchabelli perfume, Revlon, and Scott Paper Company. In addition, there are brochures from Macy's and Georg-Jensen Inc., proofs, tear sheets, and artwork from L. Bamberger & Co. and Ross Roy of New York. Title:
Edward G. Wilson papers, 1906-1991 bulk 1946-1971.
The collection highlight's Wilson's 40-year career (1930-1971) as an executive with the J. Walter Thompson Company (JWT). The bulk of materials cover Wilson's return to JWT from military service in World War II until his retirement, and includes Wilson's writings and speeches, clippings, correspondence and memoranda. As General Counsel and head of JWT's legal department, Wilson oversaw contractual relations pertaining primarily to the sponsorship of radio and television programs for a number of clients--including DeBeers Consolidated Mines, Ltd., the Eastman Kodak Company, the Ford Motor Company, the Scott Paper Company and Unilever. The collection reveals JWT's relationships with radio and television personalities--such as Fred Allen and Edgar Bergen--and professional organizations like the Radio Writers Guild and the Television Writers of America. In addition, materials in the collection touch on the anti-communist movement and blacklisting within the U.S. entertainment industry of the 1950s--involving personalities such as Jean Muir and John Henry Faulk, among others. The collection also includes records from a number of JWT international offices, with heavier representation from offices in London; Bombay (Mumbai), India; and Johannesburg, South Africa, along with records kept by some of Wilson's predecessors, such as Donald Foote and Sam Meek, and the South African advertising executive and politician James Hamilton Russell.

Title:
J. Walter Thompson Company. International Advertisements Collection, , 1900-2004 and undated bulk 1965-1990
The J. Walter Thompson Company (JWT), founded in 1864, is one of the oldest and largest enduring advertising agencies in the world. It opened its first international office in London in 1899, and by 1930 the agency had established offices in some 30 countries. At present, JWT manages offices or partnership arrangements in approximately 90 countries. The J. Walter Thompson Company (JWT) International Advertisements Collection spans the years 1900-2004 and consists primarily of print advertisements, along with some transparencies, photocopies of advertising, and other collateral material that document some of JWT's international advertising campaigns through the 20th century. Clients include a variety of local, national and multinational commercial firms, as well as government institutions and public service organizations. The holdings of the collection are uneven, with the bulk of the advertisements dating from the mid-1960s up to about 1990. There are limited early advertisements from Chesebrough-Pond's, General Motors, and other clients dating from the late 1920s and early 1930s in print and on microfilm from the various offices established during those years. There are almost no international advertisements from roughly 1933 to the middle of the 1950s. The United Kingdom, the British Commonwealth countries, and Latin America account for most of the advertisements from the mid-1950s to the late 1970s. While the holdings since about 1980 are much larger than earlier holdings, they are by no means complete, and vary substantially from office to office. Key multinational clients represented in the collection include Chesebrough-Pond's, Eastman Kodak, Ford, General Motors, Kraft, IBM, Pepsi, R.J. Reynolds, and Unilever. English translations of foreign-language advertisements are often provided by JWT's Asian and Pacific Offices. European and Latin American Offices provided translations far less frequently. Advertisements for members of the British Commonwealth are generally available in English only or in both English and the local language. Spanish-language advertisements produced by JWT offices in the United States, intended for the domestic Spanish-speaking population as well as for Latin America, may be found in the J. Walter Thompson Company Domestic Advertisements Collection.

The records consist of inbound correspondence received between the years 1911 and 1918. The correspondence is incomplete with the bulk dating from 1915 to 1918. The records passed through the hands of a local antique dealer who began to break them up and sell the pieces as thematic ephemera collections. For example, correspondence relating to firearms and sports fishing was sold separately.

William Pahlmann Associates. Publicity books of William Pahlmann Associates, 1936-1976.
Title:
Publicity books of William Pahlmann Associates, 1936-1976.
The Publicity Books are a series of twenty-six bound scrapbooks documenting William Pahlmann's career as an interior and industrial designer, the activities of his design firm William Pahlmann Associates, and the work of his staff members. These volumes were compiled by Pahlmann and members of his staff to showcase his work and that of his firm to potential clients. These books also detail Pahlmann's involvement with the American Institute of Decorators (abbreviated AID, later renamed the American Institute of Interior Designers) and its Resources Council, and his interactions with the American home furnishing industry. Additionally, the Publicity Books provide insight into the American interior design profession from the 1930's through the mid 1970's. The Publicity Books primarily contain articles and pictures taken from periodicals (such as House Beautiful, Interiors, and Architectural Digest) and newspapers from the United States, England, and Latin America. Other materials include correspondence, photographs, press releases, and ephemera from Pahlmann's personal and professional life. The books' pages are not numbered and have no labels or other identifying marks. Items are typically (but not always) grouped by subject and are usually not in chronological order, especially in the later volumes. Items about certain jobs, clients, or events may be found in multiple volumes. There is an item index in each volume, located in the front or back cover. These indices are neither chronological nor comprehensive. Materials in the Publicity Books Series complement those in the Client Photo Presentation Books Series, the Publicity/Photo Files Series, and the Publicity Series. The Client Photo Presentation Books and Publicity/Photo Files Series provide a visual supplement to the items found throughout the Publicity Books. Items in the Publicity Series give a more detailed description of the events, people, and jobs illustrated by the Publicity Books. The Publicity Series also supplies background information that is important to understanding the significance of items in the Publicity Books. When considered together, the Publicity Books, Client Photo Presentation Books, Publicity/Photo Files and Publicity Series help build a comprehensive understanding of William Pahlmann, his business, and his extensive efforts at self-presentation.

Title:
Administrative files 1973-1986.
These office files, 1973-1986, document the substantive actions of agency directors and deputy and assistant directors of the Dept. of Labor. These records constitute the official record of an agency's performance of its functions and formulation of policy and program initiatives and should be preserved at the appropriate administrative level. This series may include various types of records such as correspondence, memoranda, minutes, and reports concerning agency policy procedural precedents, organization, program development, and reviews as well as non-routine fiscal, budgetary, and personnel concerns. The series includes record types separately described in the administrative general schedule but the office filing methods and arrangement of these records in a central unified file justifies their identification and description in this manner. The correspondents are Mike Morgan and Bethlehem Steel Corporation, among others.

Title:
J. Walter Thompson Company. Edward G. Wilson Papers, 1906-1991, bulk 1946-1971
The J. Walter Thompson Company (JWT), founded in 1864, is one of the oldest and largest enduring advertising agencies in the United States. Edward G. Wilson was an executive with JWT from 1930 until his retirement in 1971, and held the positions of General Counsel, Executive Vice-President and Secretary of the Company. The Edward G. Wilson Papers span the period 1906-1991 and includes clippings, correspondence, inter-office memoranda, reports, writings, speeches and personal diaries that highlight Wilson's 40 year career (1930-1971) as an executive with the J. Walter Thompson Company (JWT). The bulk of materials fall between 1946 and 1971, and covers the period from Wilson's return to JWT following military service in World War II until his retirement. The collection reveals JWT's relationships with radio and television personalities--such as Fred Allen and Edgar Bergen--and professional organizations including the Radio Writers Guild and the Television Writers of America.
