Title:
James family additional papers, 1859-1922 (bulk), 1859-1986 (inclusive).
The bulk of this collection consists of letters from Alice Howe Gibbens James to her sons Henry (1879-1947), a lawyer; and William (1882-1961), a portrait painter. Many of the letters discuss the family's two most famous members: Alice's husband, philosopher William James (1842-1910); and his brother, novelist Henry James (1843-1916). Most of her letters are written from her home in Cambridge (Mass.), or while traveling in Europe. Her involvement with the final months and estate of Henry James (1843-1916) in London is discussed at length. She was also in Stanford (Calif.) for the earthquake of 1906. The collection also includes partial or copied letters by philosopher William James (1842-1910): postscripts he added to letters from his wife to his sons; a copy of a letter to his third son, artist Alexander R. James; a partial courtship letter to his future wife; and a complete letter he dictated to his son William. Also included are letters addressed to William James. The novelist Henry James (1843-1916) is represented with letters he received from family members, 1901-1911. An 1866 letter by family patriarch Henry James (1811-1882) also appears in transcript form. A few non-family letters can also be found in the collection, most notably letters by Edwin B. Holt, James Jackson Putnam, and Sir Leslie Stephen. The compositions series includes a diary written by Daniel Lewis Gibbens (father of Alice Howe Gibbens James) as surgeon on board the ship Manhattan en route between New York City and Liverpool, 1859-1860. Series "III. Photocopies of letters" consists of color-photocopies of letters. All are letters from William James (1842-1910) primarily to his son William James (1882-1961), and a few to his wife Alice and his other sons, Henry James (1879-1947) and Alexander Robertson James.

Charles Eliot Norton papers
Title:
Charles Eliot Norton papers
This archive contains letters addressed to Charles Eliot Norton from about 1845 to1908. Norton was a Harvard graduate (A.B. 1846) and professor of the History of Fine Arts at Harvard from 1874 to 1898, with a special interest in the study and translation of Dante. Many of the letters in this collection deal with art and with Dante. In addition he knew a great many prominent figures in both England and the United States, especially those in the political field and the literary and artistics fields. His correspondence with these people often touches upon their public and their private lives. From 1863 to 1868 Norton was joint editor with his friend James Russell Lowell of the North American review. The letters addressed to him as editor are marked in this index by a star (*) and the folders containing them are stamped with a red N.A.R.(=North American Review). In 1898 Norton's opposition to the Spanish-American war led Senator George F. Hoar to criticize him. A list of some of the letters Norton received commenting on this controversy is at the end of this index. Referenced throughout the finding aid is the Excavations at Delphi (scrapbook folder) with a folder designation, such as f.1, f.2, and so on. All folders can be found at item number 5308.

Title:
ALS, 1909 August 9 : Lamb House, Rye, Sussex, to Bruce Porter.
James apologizes at length for not answering Porter's letter, sends thanks for the Arthur Atkins volume, and mentions a visit from Fanny Stevenson (Robert Louis Stevenson's widow). He says: "Fanny F. (for S.) is always, for me, such a 'likeable' old scamp, in spite of her primitive passions, that my heart weakly warmed to her & I wd fain have seen her more ..." James had the distinction of being the only friend of Robert Louis Stevenson with whom Fanny had not quarrelled. Not recorded in Vol. IV of "The Letters of Henry James," edited by Leon Edel. In "The Complete Notebooks of Henry James," Edel notes that Porter of San Francisco was an amateur of the arts whom James had met during his lecture tour of 1904-05.

Title:
William James letters to his son Henry James and others, 1879-1910.
Consists primarily of letters written by philosopher William James to his son Henry James (1879-1947), some of them illustrated with pen and ink drawings. Some letters are written jointly by William James and his wife Alice Howe Gibbens James; some letters are addressed jointly to Henry James and his siblings. The collection also includes clippings and ephemera inserted into letters, and an autograph poem by William James, as well as related letters written by William James to Charles William Eliot and James Hazen Hyde. One letter includes a postscript by daughter Margaret Mary James Porter; another is addressed jointly to son Henry James and his uncle, the novelist Henry James (1843-1916). Inserted at the end of the scrapbook are a series of typescript transcripts of William James letters, apparently intended for publication in a book of his letters to children. One of these transcripts is directed to brother Henry James the novelist; and the other 23 are addressed to William James's daughter Margaret Mary James Porter, 1895-1910.
