Title:
Planned Parenthood Federation of America records, 1918- [ongoing].
The records of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America date from 1918 to the present and document the work of PPFA and its predecessor organizations, national and international, in the areas of advocacy, medical research, legislative reform, public relations, as well as the work of individual administrators, staff, and affiliated organizations. The collection is a significant source of information on all aspects of the history of birth control and family planning, including women's health issues; sex education; women in poverty; international population planning and policy; and the legal, political and social aspects of contraception and abortion. The collection is divided into two portions, PPFA I and PPFA II. PPFA I includes early records, dating from 1918 to the mid 1970s. PPFA II consists of records received since 1988, dating from the 1950s to the present, so there is some overlap in the dates.

There is little material from her earlier work with Planned Parenthood, etc. The family correspondence contains only a small amount with the Rankin family, including her sister, Jeannette Rankin, the congresswoman. The bulk of it is with her daughter and documents their relationship and her daughter's life as a Montana housewife and writer. The photos are mainly of family members with a small number from Pathfinder Fund trips.

Gamble, Clarence James, 1894-. Papers of Clarence J. Gamble, 1920-1966 (bulk).
Title:
Papers of Clarence J. Gamble, 1920-1966 (bulk).
Gamble's papers are a rich source of information about the development and testing of contraceptive methods, changing attitudes of the medical and health professions, legislative reform and education of the public, governmental involvement on local and national levels, and demographic studies in developing countries after the post-World War II population explosion. Correspondence, memoranda, reports, minutes, conference papers, financial data, newsletters, and other material reflect the establishment, direction, and financing of programs by Gamble to advance the cause of population control through organizations such as the National Committee on Maternal Health, American Birth Control League, Birth Control Clinical Research Bureau, Birth Control Federation, Planned Parenthood Federation, and International Planned Parenthood Federation. Significant correspondents are Abraham Stone, Cecil Damon, Mary Calderone, and Christopher Tietze. Also included in the collection are correspondence and related material concerning contraceptive field trials, family planning studies, and other population control programs of various organizations and government agencies. Considerable material exists from Puerto Rico, India, Japan, Philippine Islands, Rhodesia, Mexico, and Italy, and files sometimes contain interview and field reports, statistical data, drafts of articles and reprints, photographs, and financial data and reports. Files from the United States include similar material, as well as records of organizations, such as minutes of meetings of human betterment leagues and printed literature from state planned parenthood groups, drafts of legislation, and publicity. Much of this material reflects the work of Edris Rice-Wray, Edith Gates, Margaret Roots, and Edna McKinnon. Additional Gamble correspondence is with Margaret Sanger, R. L. Dickinson, and other colleagues; with churches, drug firms; and with organizations such as the Margaret Sanger Research Bureau and Harvard School of Public Health. Subjects cover contraceptive research and supplies, sterilization, and family planning. Title:
Brush Foundation records, series II, 1969-2003.
Consists of brochures, budgets, business cards, correspondence, grant proposals, journal articles, manuals, newspaper articles, notes, pamphlets, reference guides, and speeches. This collection is of value to researchers studying philanthropy in the Cleveland, Ohio, area and nationally, specifically in the realm of family planning and birth control. It is a source of information on late twentieth century birth control issues, particularly relating to various organizations involved in researching and implementing methods of birth control and women's health issues. The Brush Foundation funded academic research, particularly the support of researchers at Case Western Reserve University and Johns Hopkins University where studies were done regarding the health of adolescents and birth control issues in Africa and Haiti. The foundation also supported organizations taking action to utilize those academic studies, such as the International Women's Health Coalition and Planned Parenthood. Funding from the Brush Foundation was focused on numerous areas of interest dealing with health and population, promoting AIDS research and awareness, seeking methods to prevent teen pregnancy, teaching others how best to control when and if they wish to produce children, and generally promoting healthy lifestyles for people by funding research on the effects of hunger, domestic abuse, rape, and hygiene through both community efforts and developing new technologies.
