Two handwritten and signed letters, dated 7 June 1865 and 15 June (?) 1893. The missive dated 1865 is addressed to "Prof. Bartlett West Point." Blaine recommends J. Brisben Walker, "a young relative of mine," who will be attending West Point to Bartlett. The letter dated 1893 is addressed to Walker. Blaine thanks Walker for his letter which included an address. Also with the collection are two of Blaine's autographs.

Century Company records

Title: Century Company records

The Century Company published the Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine, which was widely regarded as the best general periodical of its time, performing a role as cultural arbiter during the 1880s and 1890s. It was founded in New York City in 1881 and also published the children's magazine St. Nicholas, dictionaries, and books. The Century Company records date from 1870 to the 1930s and chiefly contain correspondence with contributors, readers, public figures, and literary agents. A number of manuscripts and proofs in the collection are extensively edited and taken with annotations on letters provide a detailed record of the outlook, standards, and functions of the company.

The collection also contains an engraved portrait, a magazine portrait and a printed notice on international copyright law.

Many of the items were originally gathered by Barton Orville Aylesworth, a biographer and an autograph collector in Fort Collins, Colorado. The materials are largely letters and autographs produced by prominent American and British authors, editors, politicians, and other important artistic and historical figures in the nineteenth and early twentieth century. The items relating to the individual creators are being cataloged separately and will be available on the Brigham Young University cataloging data base. BYU special collections created this artificial collection placing the material in alphabetical order.

Also included is an envelope in which one of the letters was sent to Aylesworth and a newspaper clipping presenting a biography of Allen. Allen thanks Aylesworth for writing to him, presents autobiographical information, and lists many of his publications. Allen informs the editor of the Cosmopolitan magazine that he will be unable to write a desired article for the publication. Allen writes to Walker suggesting that it might be a good idea if Mrs. Stephens had a copy of one of his manuscripts while she drew illustrations for it.
