Papers of Maurice Thompson, 1867-1901.

The collection contains 7 manuscripts : "The flutes of Plaquemine"; "Simplicity"; ["A sojourn in the Okefinokee"], last page; "To a realist"; "Winter song"; and an untitled essay and untitled poem. There are seventeen letters from Thompson to others discussing his writings and their publication, especially "Alice of Old Vincennes," "By-ways and bird notes, " "A friend to the devil, " "How Bony got Rich, " "Poems, " and ["Songs of the mocking-bird"]; William C. Bobbs; R.L. Dawson; William H. Ward's expedition to Babylonia; and the weather. The collection also contains a drawing of a medieval cross-bowman by Thompson and a magazine obituary for him. Correspondents include : Henry Chandler Bowen, [Henry?] Holt, Houghton Mifflin & Co., S.S. McClure, Southern Society, Mr. Stoddart [Henry or Joseph Marshall?], Herbert S. Stone, [John Brisben?] Walker, and William H. Ward.

Maurice Thompson was an American author and critic who worked in a number of fields. Born in Indiana, his family moved to Georgia in his youth, where he was home schooled, and served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War.
