Title:
John James Audubon Papers 1821-1845
John James Audubon (1785-1851), the American Woodsman, is a legendary naturalist and bird artist. His technique of painting North American birds dramatically as they appeared in their natural habitat was a major contribution to the emerging discipline of ornithology in the nineteenth century. His masterpiece, (1827-1838), elephant folio, was followed by a companion text edition, (1831-1849), a smaller octavo edition of (1840-1844) and , published posthumously. This collection of original letters of publication information, ornithology, and some personal notes was sent primarily to Lucy Bakewell Audubon, his wife, from 1826-1834, and to Victor Gifford Audubon, his son, from 1833-1834, 1840-1844, with some sporadic contact with both between 1836-1839. Items in the collection relate to Audubon's Florida, Great Egg Harbor, and Great Pine Forest expeditions but not to his final expedition up the Missouri River. Of particular note, letters of 1833 and 1834 contain references to his response to the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia president George Ord's attacks on his credibility. A partial journal entry from New Orleans in 1821 and a few letters to other correspondents, including John Bachman, round out the material. Title:
John James Audubon collection 1823-1898 1826-1840
The collection contains autograph letters, signed, written by John James Audubon to his wife Lucy Green Bakewell Audubon and colleagues, one of his engraved visiting cards, and autograph manuscript writings by Audubon and fellow naturalists Thomas McCulloch, Thomas Nuttall, and John Kirk Townsend. Prominent among the letters is one of 4,000 words from Audubon to his wife, written from Edinburgh in 1826, in which he describes exhibitions of his drawings and various social events, with a transcription of a phrenologist's reading that he had received. Also included are an 1898 letter from ornithologist Leonard C. Sanford to Sarah Manning Sage, the wife of collector Dean Sage, and a letter from John Woodhouse Audubon, son of John James Audubon, to A. J. Crossman. Prominent among the writings are 118 essays published in Audubon's Ornithological Biography (1831-39), describing plates included in his major work The Birds of America (1827-38), and an annotated pencil drawing of a petrel. Much of the material in the collection was formerly owned by William Robertson Coe.

Morris Tyler family collection of John James Audubon, 1697-1982, 1820-1855
Title:
Morris Tyler family collection of John James Audubon 1697-1982 1820-1855
The Morris Tyler Family Collection of John James Audubon consists of correspondence of John James Audubon and members of his family, third party correspondence that relates to Audubon and his work, manuscripts by Audubon and others, and a small amount of family papers. Also included are research files about Audubon compiled by the Morris Tyler family, descendants of Audubon, and a nineteenth century autograph collection presumably amassed by a family member. The John James Audubon component of the collection includes correspondence among family members; letters by and to others including many naturalists and ornithologists; and third party correspondence that relates to Audubon including numerous letters of introduction written on his behalf. The bulk of the correspondence dates from the late 1820s through the 1840s when Audubon was producing and promoting Birds of America and working on The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America. Much of the correspondence concerns these ventures. There is extensive manuscript material for The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America in the collection and lesser amounts for Ornithological Biography, as well as several manuscripts by family members and others that relate to Audubon and his work. Family papers include legal and financial materials, maps and floor plans, and printed items. The autograph collection includes letters and documents signed by U. S. Presidents, military officials, cabinet officers, governors, authors, college presidents, and other prominent nineteenth century figures. Included in the autograph collection are groups of letters to several nineteenth century booksellers and publishers.

Title:
Letters from England, 1837-1838.
Records the trip that Thomas Sully and Blanche took to London. The two volumes include copies of 14 letters from each of the two to their family in Philadelphia. The letterbooks were compiled by Jane Sully, another of Thomas Sully's daughters; the original letters have apparently been lost. Each letter is lengthy and full of detail about where the Sullys lived in London; encounters with the British art establishment of the 1830s and with other American artists; dining with members of the Audubon family; a trip to France; portrait commissions, including the one negotiated with Queen Victoria; viewing art exhibitions; the experiences of a young woman abroad for the first time; and domestic considerations concerning clothing and the household routine. Also included is a plan of the rooms of the house on Great Marlborough St. in London, where Sully and Blanche stayed in 1838.

Title:
Letters, 1821, 1836, 1840.
Consists of three letters written by Audubon. The second letter was written in London on February 13, 1836. It is a brief note to Bingham, Richards, & Co. informing them that they had charged Audubon for 8 copies of "Fauna Italico..." but that he had not received the copies. The third letter was written to his son, Victor, on April 22 and April 28, 1840 from Charleston, S.C., while Audubon was visiting his collaborating naturalist, John Bachman. The letter begins with a list of 58 subscribers, followed by Audubon's directives to Victor on family business matters, and a long discussion of sales and itineraries. When the letter was written, Audubon was handling the sale of his own work and was engaged in publication of the royal octavo, "Birds in America." John Bachman wrote a page while Audubon was resting, discussing the death of his daughter, Mrs. John Woodhouse (Maria) Audubon, his grandchildren, and John Woodhouse Audubon's painting. He chides Victor regarding errors in the text of his pet project, "The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America," and is complimentary on John's forte in the painting of animals. The balance of the letter contains more notes on business from Audubon and a friendly note from Maria Martin, Bachman's sister-in-law, who was employed by Audubon as a background colorist. The letter provides insight into the Audubon-Bachman relationship.
